Recovering from an addiction is hard, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. If you live in Bellevue, Washington, drug and alcohol resources are available to help you. This organization was founded as a way to help alcoholics get the support they needed to quit drinking. Since its beginning, AA has been able to assist millions of people all over the world. The program began in the United States, but it has grown to a worldwide organization.
AA is very open and accepting. The only requirement for membership is that you have a desire to stop drinking. No one has to pay any fees or dues in order to attend a meeting. They are a non-profit organization, and other recovering alcoholics lead the meetings.
As you might expect, you can find AA meetings that are both large and small. Some people enjoy being able to attend larger meetings because they don’t feel singled out. Others appreciate the intimacy that going to a smaller meeting provides for them. You will need to decide which works best for you.
You’ll find that for the most part, the meetings are quite informal. They usually have a theme, which can change from week to week. Some meetings involve speakers, whereas others may be book studies, or studies on one of the 12 Steps.
What you’ll quickly learn is how welcoming the other participants are. They will be very happy to see you, but they won’t put you on the spot. It will be good for you to tell your story at some point, but you won’t have to share until you’re ready.

Narcotics Anonymous is very similar to AA, but there are some differences. They follow the 12 Step program of recovery, with some minor differences in the wording of the steps. NA was created as an answer for drug addicts who were looking for something similar to AA.
When you go to a meeting, you’ll be welcomed with open arms. Their meetings are both large and small, and they tend to be even less formal than AA meetings. They don’t charge any fees to attend. All you need is a desire to stop using drugs.
What’s most interesting about NA is that alcoholics often prefer it over AA. Many feel that they’re more accepting, and NA doesn’t mind at all if an alcoholic joins. They work with all types of addicts.

A drug addiction can happen to anyone; even those whom you might assume to be “immune” to such a problem. The people at the meeting you attend should be very welcoming to you. They won’t ask you to share your story until you want to share. You can just sit down and listen to others talk for as long as you need to.
Above all, don’t worry if you feel out of place. Everyone at the meeting was once in your shoes. It won’t be long before you meet others and get to make friends.

Al-Anon was founded as a way to help families whose loved ones are battling addictions. They hold weekly meetings in various locations all over the country.
Far too often, people tend to forget about the families. They suffer just as much as the addict does, and sometimes they suffer even more. An addict’s loved ones often don’t have anyone they can talk to about the challenges they’re facing. Al-Anon is so beneficial for them because it solves that problem.
Anyone in the family is allowed to attend an Al-Anon meeting, regardless of age. They’ll find support, encouragement and help from other families facing the same situations.

Alateen is a part of Al-Anon, and they are designed to specifically help teenagers and older children of addicts. For a young person whose mom or dad battles addiction, life can be very lonely. They may not know anyone else who is facing the problems they face on a regular basis. This organization offers them a safe place to talk and get advice and help.

There are so many reasons why people choose to go to detox and rehab to recover from their addictions. You may not realize it, but your substance abuse problem is really very complex. It’s something that impacts you in every possible way – physically, psychologically and spiritually. It’s often not enough to talk with a therapist or to meet regularly with other addicts. Usually, a more holistic approach is needed.
Drug and alcohol detox will be your first step, in most cases. This is a way to address the physical aspect of your addiction.
