Alcoholics Anonymous Explained

Most people are familiar with Alcoholics Anonymous. They are an organization that was founded in the mid-1930s by two men with a vision. They had a strong desire to provide a place for alcoholics to go for help. There is so much shame surrounding alcoholism, and it’s so helpful for these individuals to support one another. That’s what AA provides for them.

Alcoholics Anonymous Explained

Alcoholics Anonymous doesn’t require any membership fees or dues to be paid before you can participate. They only require that you are someone who has a desire to stop drinking. They follow the 12 Step method of recovery, which you’ll learn more about as you attend meetings.

AA has helped millions of people all over the world. You can find meetings in every city and state. They’re also located in several different countries. This is a solution you should consider if you want to stop drinking.

When you go to your first AA meeting, you may be nervous before you walk through the door. Perhaps you envision that all eyes will be on you as the new person in the room. You’ll be welcomed warmly, but not put on the spot at your first meeting. You may listen to others as they share their stories. You won’t be asked to share yours until you’re ready to talk in front of the group.

What to Expect at an AA Meeting in Ogden

Some experts recommend attending as many as 30 AA meetings in 30 days when you’re new to recovery. This is something you may want to consider because it will help you to be around others who are recovery minded.

Narcotics Anonymous Explained

Narcotics Anonymous is very similar to AA, but it’s targeted more toward drug addicts. This includes people who are addicted to both illegal and legal substances. They are also very welcoming to alcoholics. In fact, people with alcohol addictions often prefer NA to AA because of the atmosphere of the meetings.

Narcotics Anonymous Explained

Like AA, NA meetings are held once a week. They study the 12 Steps as well, but with a few minor changes to each step’s wording. You don’t have to pay anything to attend the meetings or become a member. You only have to have a desire to be free of your addiction.

Narcotics Anonymous has helped so many people recover from their drug addictions. It helps to spend time with others whose goals are the same as yours. You can support and encourage one another and even make new friends.

Your first NA meeting might cause you to feel anxious, but there’s really no need to be. The other participants are just like you; trying to stay clean and focusing on their recoveries. The meetings are run by people who are in recovery, just like you are.

You don’t have to worry about being pressured to talk until you’re ready. You can simply sit and listen while others tell their stories. The meeting will run for about an hour, and then there may be some time afterwards to socialize. You’re welcome to stay and have a cup of coffee while you get to know the other participants.

Of course, if you don’t feel comfortable at the meeting, you don’t have to come back. However, you should try to find another meeting where you do feel comfortable. It might just be that this particular one wasn’t the right one for you.

There are several NA meetings in the Ogden area. You can find one near you every day of the week at a time that’s convenient for you.

What is Alateen?

Alateen is very similar to Al-Anon, but it’s for teenagers or older children, in some cases. They also have weekly meetings, and there is no cost to attend and participate.

What is Alateen?

Young people face unique challenges when someone they love is an addict or alcoholic. It’s helpful for them to get support from people their own age. Alateen facilitates this and makes it possible for them to meet people they can connect with. It’s helpful for them to not only get encouragement, but to give it in return as well.

There are a few Ogden Alateen meetings for you to choose from. Remember, anyone is always welcome to also come to an Al-Anon meeting if these don’t work for you.

What to do if a Loved One Suffers From Alcohol Poisoning or a Drug Overdose

If you suspect that a family member or close friend has overdosed, or has alcohol poisoning, please act quickly. If it’s a drug overdose, you need to call 911 immediately. Don’t wait, because even if you’re wrong, it’s better to be safe and know that your loved one is OK. If it’s alcohol poisoning, and you’re close to a hospital emergency room, take them there right away. Otherwise, you should call 911.

Please don’t make the mistake of thinking they’ll be OK if they just sleep it off. Both of these conditions are medical emergencies that need specialized treatment. Your loved one could begin having seizures or slip into a coma at a moment’s notice. Acting right away could save their life.

A prescription opioid overdose can be treated with Naloxone at the scene by the paramedics. Families are also encouraged to keep this drug on hand at home, just in case. It has saved a countless number of lives in the last few years.

Naloxone works by blocking the effects of opioid drugs. It can quickly reverse an overdose, but many doses may need to be given. It will be necessary for the person to spend some time in the hospital to get stabilized.

Heroin overdoses are treated just like prescription painkiller overdoses. Naloxone is very effective with this drug as well. According to NIDA, more than 33,000 people in the United States overdosed on opioids in 2015. A significant percentage of these were because of heroin.

Again, acting quickly is vital. If you suspect an overdose, get medical help right away.

A cocaine overdose can occur even if it’s someone’s first time using. It’s important to know what the signs are so you can act quickly.

Some of the more common signs of a cocaine overdose include:

  • Feeling nauseous
  • Developing psychosis
  • Getting agitated easily
  • Developing tremors
  • An irregular heart rate
  • A dangerously high blood pressure
  • High body temperature
  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Bouts of confusion

Medical help is needed when someone overdoses on cocaine. Otherwise, the consequences may be fatal.

It’s important to recognize the signs of alcohol poisoning. If someone you love has been drinking excessively, this is what you need to look for:

The Signs of Alcohol Poisoning
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Slower breathing rate
  • Hypothermia
  • A rash
  • Seizures
  • An alcoholic coma
  • Stupor

Alcohol poisoning can be fatal, which is why it needs to be treated right away. Drinking water and resting isn’t enough to combat the symptoms. The individual needs to see a doctor and get medical care.

Is Drug or Alcohol Rehab the Best Solution for Your Recovery?

For many people other forms of help aren’t as good as professional treatment. This might be the case for you as well. This is how you can tell if you should consider a drug or alcohol rehab:

  • You’ve tried to quit using unsuccessfully in the past.
  • You have a home where substance abuse is common, and even encouraged.
  • You’ve been using for many years.
  • You can’t imagine your life without substances.
  • You have anxiety about recovery.

Going through drug or alcohol detox is the first step many people take when they’re ready to recover. This type of treatment specifically targets your physical addiction. You may be given medications to help you get through withdrawal, but there are also holistic treatments available.

Detoxing helps to keep you safe as you recover. It also makes withdrawal much more bearable. Many people say that it was easier for them to quit using because they went through the detoxification process first.

drug or alcohol rehab will be your next step. There, you’ll learn all about why you became an addict or alcoholic. You’ll learn about the disease of addiction and how to live your life without substances.

Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Services

Many people with addictions suffer from co-occurring disorders that make quitting difficult. If you have one of these conditions, it will be treated as well.
