Drug and Alcohol Abuse Statistics

Illicit use of prescription drugs like Oxycontin and the abuse of illegal drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamines and marijuana, have caused a huge problem across America. Excessive use of beer, wine, vodka and other alcoholic beverages can spin out of control and devastate lives.

Addiction rates have been spiking year after year. Studies show that anyone can develop an addiction. After all, this disease does not discriminate. It can affect people of all backgrounds.

Even the "nicest" and most successful people can become addicted to drugs or alcohol. Most of these people never dreamed that they would develop an addiction that takes over their lives. In fact, the use of illicit and prescription drugs is so prevalent in the U.S. that drug overdose caused more accidental deaths than motor vehicle accidents for people 25 to 64 years old in 2012. (Source: Centers for Disease Control).

These statistics don't falter at all in Pocatello or Bannock County. In fact, addiction rates here are surprisingly high. Bannock County is a High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA). It's one of the 16 counties that are in need of federal funds to help combat the issue.

To give you a better idea of how problematic drug and alcohol abuse is in Bannock County, take a look at these statistics:

  • 74.6% of drug-induced deaths were caused by opioids
  • There were 104 drug-induced deaths between 2012 and 2016
  • 55 out of 100,000 people use and need Subutex or Suboxone
  • Bannock County had higher drug-induced mortality rates than  the state rate from 2013 to 2015
  • Drug violations increased 15% from 2015 to 2016

Knowing how substance abuse is a huge issue in this area. It's vital that the government spend more effort trying to correct this issue in this county.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is perhaps the best-known support group in the world. A fellowship of men and women help each other get and stay sober. The structure of these groups relies on twelve crucial steps. The 12 Steps taught by AA help people regain control of their lives and reach and maintain sobriety.

These groups specifically treat alcoholism. With that said, many drug abusers have also attended these meetings and found them to be helpful. It's possible to attend AA in Pocatello if none of the NA meeting times works for you.

The AA program has a fairly long-standing history. Founded in 1935, this association helped million of alcoholics put down the bottle. These meetings are separated into open meetings and closed meetings. While only alcoholics are welcome at closed meetings, anyone can go to open meetings. You may find researchers, addiction specialists, therapists, and, even, students there.

Meetings will include daily reflections, book studies, step studies and speaker discussions. The meeting type will usually be clearly defined at the beginning of the meeting by a leader.

If none of these meeting times works for you, consider going to Narcotics Anonymous meetings in surrounding cities. There are many additional options available.

Al-Anon meetings are designed specifically for anyone whose life has been affected by an addict. The addict can be hooked on drugs or alcohol. It doesn't matter. The results are the same.

Al-Anon meetings in Pocatello help loved ones learn how to live with an addict. The meetings teach loved ones how to:

  • Stage interventions
  • Avoid engaging with the addict
  • Help the addict realize their ways
  • Protect themselves from the addict's actions and behaviors
  • Proactively make healthy decisions in their life

Most importantly, these meetings teach loved ones how to be happy. Many members of Al-Anon agree that these meetings were able to help them when they needed it the most. These meetings gave them the courage and the motivation to keep on going.

There are many Al-Anon meetings in Pocatello. Much like with AA and NA, try to go to at least one meeting a week. Those who are under considerable stress may wish to attend more than one meeting a week. That's completely fine, and highly recommended.

How to Deal with Drug Overdoses and Alcohol Poisoning

Anyone who abuses drugs or alcohol will be at risk of overdosing. Out of all of the possible drugs to abuse, opiate overdose rates are among the highest. Knowing what to do in the event of an overdose is crucial.

The best course of action to take will depend on the drug, or drugs, that were abused. Those who have overdosed on a stimulant, like cocaine or crack, may be more likely to suffer from a heart attack than anything else. On the other hand, those who overdosed on a depressant may look like they're falling asleep.

The one thing that everyone should do when dealing with an overdose is call 9-1-1. The overdose victim needs as much help as possible. Provide the emergency operator with as much information and details as possible, including the age and gender of the victim, the type of substances abused, and the dosage taken.

Keep the overdose victim as comfortable as possible until help arrives. Stay at the scene to monitor the victim's condition. In particular, make sure that he or she is still breathing. If not, it's time to administer CPR. Take a look at the video below for more information:

If the overdose victim loses consciousness, put him or her in the recovery position. This is important. It will keep the victim from choking on his or her own vomit. This is a leading cause of death after an overdose.

Using Naloxone to Reverse Opioid Overdoses

If you or someone you know abuses any opioids, you know just how dangerous these drugs can be. They can cause a deadly overdose within minutes. Depending on the opioid abused, only several micrograms of the drug may be needed to elicit an overdose.

Opioid overdose rates have been skyrocketing in recent years. Approximately 62,497 Americans overdosed on opioids in 2016. These numbers will only continue to rise unless something is done. Many government agencies have started to raise awareness about this issue,

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has even come up with videos and campaigns to raise awareness for this health epidemic. Check out their video below:

Naloxone is a miracle medication for opioid abusers. This prescription drug has successfully expanded the opioid overdose safety net. This medication is an opioid antagonist. It means that it attaches to opioid receptors in the body and brain. This blocks opioids and opiates from attaching. As a result, the opioids and opiates are rendered useless.

Naloxone comes in various forms. The two most popular forms include a nasal spray and an intramuscular injection. The drug will usually take effect within 5 minutes. Once the effects kick in, you should see an immediate difference in the breathing of the overdose victim. The effects will last for approximately 90 minutes.

It's possible for naloxone to wear off even though there's still opioids or opiates in the overdose victim's system. As a result, it's vital that you get the overdose victim the help that he or she needs. Call 9-1-1 immediately.

Choosing Addiction Treatment in Pocatello

Even though the peer support that can be found in AA and NA meetings is good, it is not enough for some people. There are many who need a higher level of support, and that can only be found by going to treatment.

Drug and alcohol detox and rehab can be life-changing for someone who feels stuck in their addiction. By opting for treatment, they gain access to professionals who know exactly what they need to recover. This is certainly an option that every addict should consider.

About Drug and Alcohol Detox in Pocatello

Detoxing is a very important step in the recovery process. It is done first because people need to get help for the physical part of their addictions. Alcohol and drug detox offers patients help with their withdrawal symptoms, which can quickly turn severe. Withdrawal can also lead to various complications, and going through detoxification can help people avoid them.

Not everyone will need to go through detox, but there are some types of addictions that require it for a safer quit. In addition, those who do may find that it is easier for them to be successful long-term.

There are two inpatient treatment programs that offer inpatient detox within a 50-mile radius of Pocatello. According to the SAMHSA treatment locator tool, these programs are readily accessible. But there are those who might prefer to travel a little farther away from home to get the help they need.

It is very important to go through the detoxification process on an inpatient basis. While outpatient detox centers do exist, this type of treatment can be dangerous. There are many possible complications that can occur as a person detoxes, and it is best for them to be medically supervised at all times.

There are currently no local hospitals within a 100-mile radius of Pocatello that offer detox services. But that should not deter people from receiving the help they need to recover from their addictions.

Many hospitals do offer detox programs, but they are not as welcoming and inviting as those offered through addiction treatment centers.

Going to a Pocatello Alcohol Rehab

Alcoholism can be a deadly disease, and it claims more lives every single year. Alcoholics will be required to go through detox when they begin recovering. But that is not where their journey should end.

Alcohol rehab offers them even more support to help them recover.

There are more than 20 different facilities that offer alcohol rehabilitation services in the Pocatello area. But only seven of them are located right in the city itself. Still, that leaves people with plenty of options when they are searching for treatment.

Finding the right alcohol rehab is so important. While there are outpatient programs available, it may be best to choose an inpatient facility. Most people find that they need the level of care that is available through inpatient treatment. This is especially true during the beginning stages of their recovery.

Moving on to Drug Rehab

For those who are addicted to drugs, after detoxing, transitioning to a drug rehab is the next step. What many people do not realize is that their addictions could be triggered by a co-occurring disorder such as ADHD or PTSD. It is not uncommon for people to self-medicate their symptoms away with various drugs. It works for a short period of time, but eventually, it is no longer effective. Not to mention the fact that so much damage is done to the brain and body by using illicit substances.

Drug rehab gives people the chance to work through these issues through therapy. Patients are typically offered various types of therapy to meet their specific needs. It is all a part of their personalized treatment plan.

The psychological aspect of addiction has to be addressed in order for people to recover successfully. Without going through drug rehab, so many people will find themselves relapsing. That is something that should be avoided, if at all possible. Drug rehabilitation can be so effective, and the right program can truly change a person’s life.

There are twenty-three different drug rehab centers that people can choose from in the Pocatello area. But please note that they are not all the same, and they may not all be effective.

The best rehab programs are those who look at each patient as an individual with their own specific needs. Opting for an inpatient program is typically the best choice because it gives people the level of care they need to be successful. While outpatient can be effective, it is best reserved for follow-up care, or for those who have a strong support system at home.

Choosing Between Different Levels of Care at Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities

Although free addiction resources can help you get started on your road to recovery, substance abusers will often need professional help. They can get the help they need from a drug or alcohol rehab facility

The rehab facility will first conduct an assessment to determine the condition of each patient. Both physical and psychological tests are necessary. It's not unusual or uncommon for drug addicts and alcoholics to suffer from co-occurring mental health disorders. In these cases, it's vital that any mental illnesses be diagnosed early on. This will allow addiction specialists to personalize a dual diagnosis treatment plan

After the initial assessment, patients will, then, receive medical detox. In some cases, this is absolutely necessary. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms, for example, can end up being deadly. Drug and alcohol detox will ease the withdrawals for a more comfortable recovery.

Once detox is complete, patients can start other types of treatments, like behavioral therapy and counseling. Some alcohol and drug treatment centers also offer holistic treatment approaches and more. It's important to consider the specialty of each rehab center. This will help you choose the right rehab center for you or your loved one's needs.

In particular, it's important to consider the level of care that each rehab facility can provide. The levels of care can be separated into two categories: inpatient treatment vs. outpatient treatment. Both possess unique features that are more suitable for certain patients. Let's take a look at the differences below.

Northpoint Recovery is an inpatient rehab facility. We offer 28-day alcohol and drug detox and rehab programs. An inpatient facility is one that offers the highest level of care possible to our patients. This means that we offer around-the-clock medical supervision and support. We have doctors and nurses on staff to make sure that each patient is progressing towards recovery.

Patients who choose an inpatient treatment program will have to move into the addiction treatment center. We have 48 beds at our facility. Patients do not leave until they have successfully completed a treatment program. They will eat at the facility, sleep at the facility, and, basically, do everything there for the entire duration of their stay.

Family members and friends are allowed to visit on certain days. Some patients may need prior approval before anyone can visit them.

This level of dedicated care and the long-term treatment ensures that patients have the best shot at recovery. The benefits of an inpatient treatment program include:

  • Getting dedicated care from staff; at Northpoint Recover, we have a staff-to-client ratio of 2:1
  • Being able to stay in a calm and peaceful environment
  • Being unable to gain any access to drugs or alcohol
  • Having immediate access to therapists, counseling, and more
  • Being able to build a strong support network with other patients who are also there

Inpatient treatment programs are highly recommended for those who have a difficult time with drugs or alcohol. These programs offer many merits and advantages.

The only thing that's of concern is the price. Inpatient treatment programs tend to be a bit costlier than outpatient alternatives.

Outpatient treatment programs are a bit different than inpatient treatment programs. They do not require patients to stay at the rehab center. Patients have more flexibility when it comes to scheduling their treatment.

Although Northpoint Recovery does not offer outpatient programs, we have many other drug and alcohol treatment center locations that do. These programs offer different types of outpatient programs. The most common types include:

  • Standard outpatient programs. These programs are the most flexible. Patients can pick and choose to get as much or as little treatment as they'd like. They can schedule the treatment around their day with ease. There are no commitments involved.
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs). These programs are a step up from standard outpatient programs. Patients will agree to get at least 9 hours of therapy each week. They can schedule the hours however they'd like.
  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs). These programs are a step up from IOPs. Patients will need to travel to the addiction treatment center on a daily basis. They receive anywhere from 4 to 8 hours of therapy every day. With that said, patients can choose to receive treatment during the day or at night.

Outpatient programs offer some unique benefits. For one, they tend to be more affordable than inpatient treatment programs. In most cases, almost every addiction treatment service is covered by one's health insurance.

Secondly, outpatient treatment programs offer flexible treatment times. This is ideal for those who can't take time off work or school. It's also ideal for parents who have young children at home. They can get the substance abuse treatment they need without anyone knowing about it.
