Alcoholics Anonymous
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) was the first support group of its kind. It was started in 1935 by two men named Bill Wilson and Bob Smith. Both of them were alcoholics, and they felt that there was something lacking for those who wanted to recover. They strongly believed in a support group model and felt that people needed to be able to rely on one another. As a result, AA was founded.
It started as a very small organization, but it grew quickly. Today, it has reached people all over the world. There are many countries that have their own Alcoholics Anonymous chapters. You can find AA meetings all over the United States; practically in every city.
The only requirement to attend an AA meeting and become a member is to have a desire to stop drinking. Anyone can come to an open meeting, but closed meetings are reserved only for alcoholics.
AA meetings are usually an hour long, and people attend once a week. There is a movement that encourages people who are new to recovery to attend a meeting every day for 30 days. Many individuals have done that and found it to be very helpful.
Just like NA, there are different types of AA meetings. Some may focus on studying the Big Book, which is the organization’s text. They may concentrate on the 12 Steps or on other topics. Many groups will celebrate birthdays on a monthly basis.
It’s normal to feel a bit nervous before you attend an AA meeting. Many people do, and the other participants know what it feels like to walk through those doors for the first time. They will do everything they can to help you feel more comfortable. You may be called upon to share your story, but not until you feel ready. Until then, you are invited to simply sit and listen.

Alateen is Available to Support and Encourage Young People
Alateen is an extension of Al-Anon that is specifically for young people. They cater mostly to teenagers and young adults. However, there are some groups that allow older children to participate in the meetings.
The work that Alateen does is so important. For many teens, they do not have anyone they can talk to about the challenges they face. Their loved one’s addiction or alcoholism can be all-consuming for them, and it is often difficult to cope.
Alateen gives young people the chance to meet others who know where they are coming from. They get to share their stories and their concerns and get the support they so desperately need.
Alateen offers chat meetings for young people to participate in online. There are specific meeting dates and times, but there are many to choose from. Participants must be between the ages of 13 and 18.
These meetings are completely safe. Each one is moderated by an adult, and teens are not granted access until an adult is present. The meetings must be accessed on a computer.

How Can You Know if a Friend or Family Member is in Danger of Alcohol Poisoning or a Drug Overdose?
Anyone who drinks excessively or uses drugs is at risk for an overdose. This is something that worries a lot of people when they have an addicted loved one. There are two instances when people are more in danger of overdosing than others.
The first is when they are trying a new drug for the first time. Heroin and cocaine are excellent examples of this. It is very difficult to judge what the proper dose should be because everyone is so different.
The second is when people relapse after attempting to stop using. Unfortunately, relapses are very common for drug addicts and alcoholics. But when people go back to using, they often misjudge how much they should take. What they do not realize is that their body’s tolerance level has changed. They may go back to their usual dose, not realizing that it is too much.
If you have a loved one who has overdosed on drugs, they are likely to have some symptoms that are unmistakable. Some of the more common signs of a drug overdose are:
- Problems breathing
- A blocked airway, indicated by gurgling sounds
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Violence or aggressive behaviors
- A high body temperature
- Paranoia or psychosis
- Seizures
- Unsteady walking
- Dilated pupils
- Chest pains
- Blue lips or fingertips
- Abrupt confusion and disorientation
- Becoming unresponsive
- Falling unconscious
- Agitation or irritability
It is possible for them to have overdosed without having all of the symptoms on this list. Most people will only have a few of them.
People frequently do not know how to identify alcohol poisoning when they see it. Most of the time, they assume that the person is just drunk. That means that a lot of cases get missed, which can put the individual in danger.
While it can be easy to confuse alcohol poisoning with intoxication, there are some differences. Some of the most common signs of alcohol poisoning include:
- Passing out and cannot be awakened
- Vomiting excessively
- Seizures
- Abrupt confusion
- Slower breathing rates
- Irregular breathing, or none at all
- Pale or blue-tinted skin
- A low body temperature (hypothermia)
Again, it is not necessary to have all of these symptoms. Some people may only have a few of them.
If you believe that someone you love has overdosed on drugs or alcohol, it is critical for you to act quickly. Hesitating even for a few seconds could have fatal consequences.
The first thing you should do is call 911. Let them know that you suspect an overdose and you would like an ambulance right away. When the paramedics arrive, give them all the information you can, including the type of drug that was taken.
Is Professional Addiction Treatment the Best Course of Action for You?
For some people, professional treatment is necessary for recovery. While support groups and outpatient treatment can work, it is not always enough. This might be the case for you.
It is OK if you are someone who needs to go to detox and/or rehab. There is nothing to feel ashamed of because you are certainly not alone. It is best to take the proper steps right now to get the help you need to quit.
If you have a drug addiction, you may need to consider getting professional help. However, not everyone is aware of the signs that indicate that they are addicted.
Some common signs of drug addiction include:
- Going through withdrawal when a drug wears off.
- Continuing to take a drug even when you no longer need it.
- Feeling the need to increase how much you take to get the desired effects.
- Being unable to stop yourself from using.
- Obsessing about using, and finding it hard to think about anything else.
- Attempting to quit and then finding out that you cannot.
Likewise, people are often unaware of being alcoholics as well. It is important to know what the signs of alcoholism are. They include:
- Continually drinking more than you planned.
- Attempting to cut back or quit, but being unable to.
- Spending a great deal of time obtaining alcohol, drinking and then recovering from hangovers.
- Having such a strong desire for alcohol that you cannot think about anything else.
- Continuing to drink even when it is having a negative impact on your health and relationships.
You may need to go through a period of drug and alcohol detox once you are ready to quit. This is a step that will help you with withdrawal symptoms. It can also cause you to avoid experiencing some of the more common complications that can occur with recovery.
This is a very important step, and it should not be skipped. Once you have finished detoxing, you will be ready for rehab.
At drug and alcohol rehab, you will learn more about yourself and your addiction. You will meet with a therapist and participate in group therapy meetings regularly. This step is also essential because it will address the root cause of the problem. If you did not go to rehab, you are very likely to relapse after detoxing.
