Kelso, WA Addiction Resources Guide

Addiction Resources in Kelso, Washington

Kelso is situated right north of the Oregon/Washington border. And while it isn’t the biggest city in the state, it’s no stranger to big-city problems like drug addiction.

In fact, Cowlitz County (of which Kelso is the head) actually was the top in the state for opioid overdoses in 2014.

On top of that, the opioid crisis cost the county a whopping $128 million in 2016 – more than the operating budgets of the entire country and its five biggest cities that year.

Clearly, Cowlitz County and Kelso, Washington are in the middle of a serious drug problem.

It’s so important, then, to recognize the many addiction resources available to residents of this area. Overdose help, local support groups, and professional addiction programs can go a long way towards keeping substance abusers safe, supported, and on the road to recovery.

The Dangers of Overdosing

In the world of addiction, few consequences are quite as devastating as an overdose. Taking too much of any addictive substance can cause a host of long-term problems. It can lead to liver and kidney damage, permanent brain trauma, gastrointestinal problems that last a lifetime, and so much more.

But beyond that, overdoses can and often do lead to death.

In 2017 alone, more than 72 thousand Americans lost their lives to a fatal drug overdose. That’s up 316% from 1999. And when it comes to alcohol poisoning, there are about 6 deaths every single day.

And worst of all, these numbers are continuing to grow year over year.

Now more than ever, then, it’s critical to know both the signs and symptoms of an overdose as well as what to do should you be around one.

Not all overdoses look the same. And while many come with clearly noticeable signs like vomiting or loss of consciousness, others can be much subtler. That’s why it’s so important to know exactly what overdose symptoms go along with which drug class.

Below is a list of the most common overdose symptoms for some of the most widely abused drugs today. And the sooner you can spot these signs, the sooner you can get lifesaving help.

HeroinAn especially deadly illicit drug, the signs of a heroin overdose are as follows:

  • AIRWAYS AND LUNGS
    • No breathing
    • Shallow breathing
    • Slow and difficult breathing
  • EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT
    • Dry mouth
    • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
    • Discolored tongue
  • HEART AND BLOOD
    • Low blood pressure
    • Weak pulse
  • SKIN
    • Bluish-colored nails and lips
  • STOMACH AND INTESTINES
    • Constipation
    • Spasms of the stomach and intestines
  • NERVOUS SYSTEM
    • Coma
    • Delirium
    • Disorientation
    • Drowsiness
    • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Alcohol – Alcohol poisoning can be incredibly deadly. Some of the most notable signs include:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Cocaine – One of the most widely abused drugs today, cocaine can cause a deadly overdose quite easily. Signs of an overdose include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Crystal Meth – A powerful stimulant and highly addictive, crystal meth is a growing problem. Symptoms of a methamphetamine overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Prescription Opioids – One of the biggest drivers of the current opioid epidemic, painkillers like OxyContin and Vicodin kill over one hundred Americans each day. Some signs of an overdose include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Benzodiazepines – Widely prescribed yet highly addictive, benzodiazepines like Xanax and Ativan are both powerful and deadly when used improperly. Some symptoms of a benzo overdose include:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

The absolute first step to take after identifying the signs of an overdose is to contact 9-1-1. Only a medical professional can accurately assess the victim and the situation.

If you do have to leave the side of the victim, even for a minute, be sure to place them into what’s known as the “recovery position.” This position helps keep the airway open and prevents a number of dangerous complications.

The operators at 911 may ask you several questions to get a better feel for the situation. These questions may include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What drugs have they taken, how much did they take, and how long ago did they take them?
  • Did they have a legal prescription for the drugs?
  • Did they take any other substances at the same time?

It’s important to answer each of these questions honestly and as completely as possible. The more accurate the information, the better able they’ll be to help.

They may also ask you to perform certain actions to help ensure the best outcome as you wait for the ambulance. These actions may include CPR or inducing vomiting, among other things.

When the ambulance arrives, they'll take over and begin administering more comprehensive care. They may, for instance, use overdose-reversing medications like naloxone to help. They’ll also likely transport the victim to a hospital for further care and observation.

Local Addiction Support Groups Near Kelso, WA

Addiction is a devastating disease. And sadly, many people don’t get the help they need to achieve sobriety and stay supported and motivated along the way.

What makes this even more unfortunate is the fact that there are so many different addiction support groups to choose from, both across the U.S. and in the Kelso, Washington area.

These groups not only add some much-needed social connections but can also keep recovering addicts pushing through the hard times and resisting overpowering cravings.

Below are some of the most notable support groups near Kelso.

Without a doubt one of the most popular support groups, Alcoholics Anonymous follows what’s known as the 12 steps. These steps were developed as a way of promoting honesty, humility, and courage in the face of alcoholism. And the steps were so popular, they soon spread to a number of other AA offshoots.

One reason AA is so popular is that it's so easily accessible. Meetings take place in most major cities and towns in the United States. And members pay zero dues and are free to join without discrimination.

It’s no wonder why the National Institutes on Drug Abuse names 12-step programs as one of the eight evidence-based behavioral therapies for addiction that are proven to support sobriety.

And in the Kelso area, there are plenty of AA groups to choose from.

One of the first offshoots of AA that used the 12-steps, Narcotics Anonymous (NA) was first founded in 1953. Since then, it’s grown to more than 67 thousand different weekly meetings in 139 countries around the world.

Rather than focusing on a single substance of abuse like alcohol, NA opens up the doors to all forms of substance addiction. Heroin addicts, crystal meth users, coke fiends, and even alcoholics are all welcome to attend.

And while the 12-steps of NA are slightly different than those of Alcoholics Anonymous, they’re still backed up by the science.

Kelso residents have a wide range of NA meetings to pick from too. Below are some of the closest.

One of the most destructive parts of addiction is the fact that it impacts more than just the substance abuser. Friends, family members, associates, and even coworkers can all be negatively impacted by someone’s addiction as well. And for them, there’s Al-Anon.

Al-Anon is a 12-step program designed specifically for those around an addict that has been affected by their substance abuse. Here they can share their stories, get advice, and receive the emotional support they need to stay happy and healthy.

Al-Anon groups aren’t quite as common as AA or NA meetings, but there are still plenty of options in the Kelso area.

For teens, an alcoholic friend or family member can be especially devastating. And unfortunately, many don’t know where to go to get help and support.

Alateen is a 12-step offshoot of Al-Anon focused specifically on teens. Here, young people can feel comfortable and safe sharing their story amongst their peers rather than a room full of adults.

There aren’t any Alateen meetings in Kelso or nearby Longview. But still, there are a few meetings that aren’t too far away.

Similar to the relationship between AA and Al-Anon, Nar-Anon is the family side of Narcotics Anonymous. Members of these groups are usually friends or family members of addicts of any kind, not just alcoholics.

Meetings are a bit sparser with Nar-Anon. However, there are still a few nearby Kelso.

Alcoholism can have long-lasting impacts not just on the individual, but also on their children. And many people who grew up in an alcoholic home still struggle with the emotional and developmental scars from so long ago.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA), a 12-step group, focuses on these specific individuals.

There are quite a few ACoA meetings taking place near Kelso, Washington.

While all of the prior groups have been built on the 12 steps, this isn’t the only model for recovery available. There are plenty of non-12-step alternatives out there. And for some, they can be just as effective at keeping recovering addicts sober.

SMART Recovery is one of the most notable 12-step alternatives. This group is non-spiritual in nature and focuses more on the present than the past. It teaches recovering addicts real-life strategies that they can start using immediately to overcome cravings, avoid triggers, and stay clean.

Groups are also led by certified instructors rather than members themselves.

Below are some of the closest SMART Recovery meetings.

Whether it’s a lack of a means for travel, a full schedule, or embarrassment, there are a number of reasons why someone may not want to attend in-person meetings.

Luckily, there are a variety of online options for support available to anyone with a computer and an internet connection.

And while face-to-face meetings are certainly more helpful than online ones, these options give a source of support to some who may not ever have found one otherwise.

Below are a few links to some of the most popular online support groups.

Professional Addiction Treatment: The Best Chance at Recovery

Overcoming a substance use disorder takes time, persistence, and a lot of support. And while it has been done before, most addicts end up needing the help of a professional program to ensure the absolute best results.

Unfortunately, many addicts are under the false impression that they don’t even have a problem that needs to be treated. One national survey from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) found that a whopping 94.3% of people who needed treatment but didn’t receive it didn’t think they had a problem in the first place. That’s 17.1 million Americans in complete denial about their disease.

But once you do recognize the signs of serious denial, it’s time to get help. And a professional program is the best place to start.

Treatment is typically broken down into two particular phases: detoxification and rehabilitation.

Detox

Focused more on the body side of addiction, detoxification helps addicts push through the overwhelming and often excruciating withdrawals associated with quitting a drug. These withdrawals can be both physical (headaches, nausea, diarrhea, cold sweats) and psychological (depression, anxiety, irritability, paranoia).

What a professional detoxification program offers is both motivational and medical support. For many, these withdrawals can very quickly and easily lead to a relapse. A professional program can help keep addicts focused on their long-term recovery, even in the face of the most intense cravings.

These programs are also equipped with both medical expertise and technology. As such, they can both prevent and treat any serious complications that may arise. These can include seizures, pneumonia, malnutrition, dehydration, heart abnormalities, and more.

Partnering with a professional program, then, helps ensure both the best rate of success and the safety of the patient.

Rehab

Rehabilitation is the other side of the treatment coin. After detox, treatment begins focusing on the more psychological side of addiction. This is where the compulsive and self-destructive behaviors come from.

With a rehab program, patients go through one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and various behavioral therapies to try and reverse the unhealthy life strategies so common in addicts. They can also help to replace the subconscious behaviors that led to continued substance abuse.

There are three main types of rehab programs to choose from too.

  • Inpatient Rehab – This type of treatment is what most people imagine when they think of rehab. Patients typically eat and sleep on the campus grounds while receiving treatment throughout the day. It’s like a recovery-focused vacation from normal day-to-day life. However, many programs don’t allow patients to attend jobs or school at the same time, so it may not be right for everyone.
  • Outpatient Rehabilitation – Flexibility is the name of the game with outpatient programs. Treatment sessions take place in the evenings and what patients do with their day is up to them – job, school, family, etc. These programs don’t offer the same protections from relapsing, though, since they are free to do as they please during the day.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – IOPs offer a higher level of care than outpatient, though not as high as inpatient. Treatment sessions take place in the evenings but last longer and occur more frequently than a normal outpatient program.

Choosing to Travel for Treatment

Kelso and the county in general have had problems with addiction for years. And as a result, a number of addiction treatment programs have popped up nearby in recent years.

While these programs might be close, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re the very best options. And in fact, making the choice to travel for addiction treatment can actually end up being the best decision for long-term recovery.

That’s because traveling for treatment opens up a range of new treatment possibilities. Other programs may offer higher quality services, better amenities, and more experience. They might also provide patients with medications and therapies that simply are not an option within Kelso.

Our Closest Outpatient Location:

And finally, looking outside of your home town for treatment can also help you find a program with the single best quality you can hope for – it might fit your specific needs. This might include a holistic approach to treatment, dual diagnosis specialization, 24/7 nursing staff, and more.

In the end, finding the right facility for you is so much more important than just choosing the closest.
