The Dangers of Overdosing

Unfortunately, drug overdoses have now become a national epidemic in the United States. In 1999, nearly 17 thousand people died from a drug overdose. In 2017, more than 70 thousand Americans lost their lives to drugs. The problem is huge – and it’s only getting worse.

In fact, drug overdoses are now the number one killers of Americans under the age of 55.

As a result, it’s critical to know how to spot the signs of an overdose and how to treat it. Because today more than ever, you might just have to deal with one firsthand.

Not all overdoses look the same. And the better equipped you are to spot the signs of one, the better able you’ll be to help treat it.

Below are some of the most common signs of overdose among the most widely-abused drugs today.

Cocaine – One of the most well-known illicit drugs today, cocaine has long been used and abused. But it’s popularity is matched by its dangers too, and taking too much can easily become deadly. Some signs of an overdose on this drug could include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Heroin – Without a doubt one of the most notorious drugs on the street today, heroin is at the forefront of the raging opioid epidemic. And when used, it can quickly and easily lead to an overdose. The signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Prescription Opioids – These drugs are usually prescribed to treat pain in patients. But medications like OxyContin and Percocet can be addictive as well as deadly. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Alcohol – Legal, widely available, and culturally ingrained in much of current society, alcohol is abused more than most other addictive drugs. But alcohol poisoning can also be deadly. Here are some of the signs to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Benzodiazepines – Some of the most well-known benzos are Xanax, Ativan, and Klonopin. And while they do have legitimate medical use, these medications are becoming more highly abused with each passing year. Some of the most recognizable signs of a benzo overdose include:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

Crystal Meth – A powerful stimulant that’s also highly addictive, meth can cause serious side effects like paranoia, hallucinations, and even mania. It can also be quite deadly too. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Treating an overdose effectively is all about getting help and getting help fast. That’s why if you notice the signs of an overdose above, you should call 9-1-1 immediately.

And if you have to leave the side of the victim to do so, be sure to place them in what’s known as the recovery position. This position can help cut down on the risk of serious complications like vomiting or choking. And this simple act can easily end up saving a life.

Once you’re connected to an operator, they’ll likely send an ambulance while also asking a few questions about the victim, their condition, and the situation as a whole. These may include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What drugs have they taken, how much did they take, and how long ago did they take them?
  • Did they have a legal prescription for the drugs?
  • Did they take any other substances at the same time?

It’s critical that you answer these questions honestly and to the best of your knowledge. The more accurate the information is, the better able they’ll be to help you and the victim. Lying about whether the drugs were illicit, for example, can very easily lead to a worse outcome.

As you wait for the ambulance, the operator may also instruct you to administer CPR or perform other life-saving actions like inducing vomiting. Be sure to follow instructions as closely as you can.

Once the EMTs arrive, they will likely treat the victim with more extensive care and may use certain medications (like naloxone) to improve the outcome. They’ll probably also transfer the victim to a hospital.

Local Support Groups Near Brier, Washington

For many addicts, a strong will and a desire to get sober aren’t enough to kick an addiction for good. And for most, it takes an enormous amount of both motivation and support in order to get clean and stay clean.

That’s where local support groups come in. These groups are typically free, widely available, and open to anyone looking to recover from their addiction. And they’re a great source of support in any recovery plan.

Thankfully, there are quite a few local support groups around Brier to choose from too. Below are some of the best.

The original 12-step group, Alcoholics Anonymous was first founded in 1935 and has since grown to more than 2.1 million members worldwide.

And given just how accessible these meetings are, it isn’t any wonder that so many people are taking advantage of it. That’s because membership is entirely free and open to anyone looking to get control over their drinking. And on top of that, they’re also completely anonymous.

Plus, the 12-step model is actually proven by hard science to be effective in helping maintain sobriety.

And luckily, there are plenty of AA meetings in the Brier area.

One of the first offshoots of AA, Narcotics Anonymous also follows a similar 12-step model. However, instead of focusing specifically on alcohol, NA also opens up its doors to addicts of all kinds. That means people struggling with an addiction to heroin, crack, meth, and even alcohol are all welcome to attend.

And like Alcoholics Anonymous, the 12 steps of NA are also evidence-based and proven effective.

Around Brier, there are quite a few meetings happening too.

Growing up in an alcoholic home can have lifelong repercussions on children. And for years or even decades after the trauma, these individuals can still suffer from emotional, motivational, and functional problems.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) is a 12-step group devoted specifically to helping these individuals find the support they need.

And while meetings aren’t quite as numerous as other 12-step groups, there are plenty of ACoA meetings nearby to look at.

When it comes to flexibility, online groups are one of the best options for around-the-clock support.

So, whether it’s a full schedule, no means of travel, or just embarrassment, these groups can provide support for people who might otherwise have no way of getting it.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

While support is critical during recovery, it often isn’t enough to keep recovering addicts from relapsing in the long run. And in fact, as many as 60% of substance abusers end up turning back to old bad habits at some point in their lives.

However, just because the relapse rate is high, it doesn’t mean that recovery is impossible. And one of the absolute best ways of improving those odds is by enrolling in a professional treatment program.

A professional treatment program uses evidence-based therapies, medical-grade care, and proven strategies for keeping patients healthy, supported, and sober. And for many, it’s the only way to get on the road to recovery and stay on it for life.

Along with better odds of staying clean in the future, a professional program also brings with it a number of other benefits. Below are some of the most noteworthy.

  • It keeps your safety in mind by preventing and treating any serious complications that can pop up, some of which might actually be deadly.
  • It offers a range of amenities to make recovery far more comfortable.
  • It connects patients with a social support network – a vital part of a successful recovery.
  • It facilitates a smooth transition to aftercare programs to help solidify sobriety after leaving the program.
  • It helps patients develop healthier life strategies and abstinence techniques they can continue to use long afterwards.

There are two main types of programs: detoxification programs and rehabilitation programs.

Detoxification – A detox program is usually the first step on the road to recovery. These programs help keep patients safe and drug-free during one of the most trying stages – withdrawal.

When an addict quits their addictive substance, their body is assaulted by a number of physical and psychological side effects. These might include:

  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability

And in fact, some withdrawal syndromes (like with alcohol or benzos) can be incredibly deadly without the right kind of treatment.

Detox programs, then, help keep patients sober and safe.

Rehabilitation – After detox comes rehab. These programs can begin once the worst stages of withdrawal are over. But even then, recovering addicts are at risk of falling back into old bad habits and compulsive drug use.

These programs usually use a combination of one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and behavioral therapies to promote lasting sobriety. And without it, the overwhelming majority of recovering addicts will turn back to their former ways.

There are three main types of rehab programs.

  • Inpatient Rehab – This type of program is what most people imagine when they think of rehabilitation. Patients are required to stay in a centralized location for the duration of the program (usually 30 days). It’s like a recovery retreat. But for some, it can be too disruptive to normal daily obligations like school or work.
  • Outpatient Rehabilitation – These programs, which usually last around 3 months, offer much more flexibility. Patients are free to use their days as they wish. And on certain evenings throughout the week, they go in for treatment sessions that last only a few hours. For severe addictions, though, these programs might not offer a high enough level of care.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – These programs offer flexibility while also giving patients a more focused recovery program. Treatment sessions occur in the evenings but are longer and take place more frequently throughout the week.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any professional programs within Brier itself. And while there are a few programs in the surrounding areas, making the choice to travel away from your hometown for treatment might be the best recovery decision you can make.

Doing so offers a variety of benefits. In addition to opening up the door to higher quality programs, it can also:

  • Offer reflection time during travel
  • Give patients the opportunity to focus entirely on their recovery
  • Solidify the commitment to sobriety
  • Make it harder to quit
  • Offer more privacy and confidentiality
