Al Anon is an organization for families and friends of alcoholics. It provides people a community of others who understand the struggles you deal with.

The group also has special meetings for children and teenagers. These are called Alateen meetings. They help children and teens cope with the difficulty of having an alcoholic adult in their life. The meetings also provide resources to help prevent children and teens from abusing substances themselves.

What to do in Case of an Overdose

It’s always wise to prepare for worst-case scenarios. Sadly, these scenarios happen all too often with drugs and alcohol. Therefore, we put together this list of basic steps for dealing with overdoses. We’ve broken it down into different types of drugs.

No matter what type of drug is involved in an overdose, your first step should be to call 911. That will contact emergency services. They will be able to give you more detailed instructions. They’ll also send professional help right away.

Sometimes someone doesn’t get help in an emergency. With drugs and alcohol, this is usually because of fear. People are afraid of legal punishments. This prevents them from seeking emergency medical help.

Utah passed legislation in 2014 designed to stop this. It’s called the Overdose Good Samaritan Law. It protects people from legal trouble when they are seeking or helping someone seek emergency medical services for an overdose. That means you won’t go to jail for getting help for an overdose.

Heroin overdoses in Utah have tripled since 2007.  That means you need to be prepared. The best way to prepare is by understanding what to do.

The most important thing to do for a heroin overdose is to dial 911. The operator will give you steps to follow. They’ll also answer any questions you have. Also, they’ll send medical help right away. These professionals have the tools and training needed.

If you’re unsure if someone has overdosed on heroin, look for these signs:

  • Slowed heartbeat or pulse
  • Blue lips, nails, and/or skin
  • Slowed or shallow breathing
  • Irregular heartbeat or pulse
  • Non-responsive

These are all signs of a heroin overdose. Even if the person isn’t overdosing, they’re all signs of a serious medical problem. That means, no matter what, you should get help right away.

Cocaine isn’t talked about as much as opioids. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem. Cocaine overdoses still happen.

The first step in dealing with an overdose from cocaine is to call 911. Operators are trained to give specific, life saving advice. They’ll send emergency medical services. The operator will walk you through the steps you should take. They’ll also answer any questions you have and help you stay calm.

A cocaine overdose looks different from heroin or opioid overdoses. Cocaine is a stimulant. That means it speeds up the body’s functions. Signs of a cocaine overdose include:

  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Tremors
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Very fast heartbeat or pulse
  • Very high blood pressure
  • Confusion
  • Seizures

There are many types of prescriptions drugs. They have different kinds of effects on the body. Therefore, you need to know what kind of prescription drug you’re dealing with. No matter what the drug is, you should call 911.

The 911 operator will ask questions. This gives them the information they need to send help. After that, they’ll walk you through the steps you can take to help.

Some overdoses are accidentally. For example, someone might forget they already took their medicine. They might then take another dose. Other times, people take too many prescriptions medications intentionally. They might be trying to get high. They could also be trying to hurt themselves.

All of these situations demand professional medical help. That means dialing 911 and explaining what happened to the operator. They might have you call poison control. You might also be told to call your doctor. The operator might send an ambulance.

Is Northpoint Recovery the Best Option for You?

We think it’s important that everyone find the best recovery option for themselves. We realize that what works for some people doesn’t work for others. That’s why we want to be sure that we really are the best fit for your needs.

Northpoint Recovery isn’t a program designed for a “quick fix” to addiction. We make sure to offer all the care and support someone needs. We don’t just want you to get clean, we want you to stay clean. Our patients are more than their addictions. That’s why we do our best to give you the tools to lead the life you want, no matter what that is.

Our Closest Inpatient Location:

Our Closest Outpatient Location:

You should call or contact us if you have any questions. We’ll listen to what you have to say. Our staff will help you decide if Northpoint is the best place for your recovery.

Northpoint Recovery offers help, support, and compassion to addicts from all walks of life. We work with adult men and women in a comfortable, luxurious, and supportive setting.

Most clients stay for 28 days after detox. Some may stay longer. You’re always free to leave if you feel that we’re not meeting your needs.

We know the journey can feel intimidating, but we walk alongside you, offering comfort, compassion, and years of hard-won knowledge. We offer cutting-edge treatment protocols, and a caring staff. We've seen the hard cases, and we know that no one is beyond redemption.

Empirically Based Treatment Program

We use an empirically based treatment program. That means we’re constantly reviewing our methods. We look for what works and what doesn’t work. This lets us use the best tools to help you meet your goals. It also means we don’t waste time and resources on methods that don’t work.

Empirically based treatment programs approach addiction from a scientific standpoint. They recognize that addiction is a disease, not a moral failure. This benefits patients by helping them to learn to value themselves. It shows them that their addiction doesn’t define them.

Individualized Care

Northpoint Recovery has a huge focus on individualized care. That’s part of our empirically based approach. We’ve found that one-size-fits-all solutions aren’t as effective. People do better when their treatment program is tailored to their specific needs and goals.

This individualized care takes many forms. It shapes the way we approach detox, therapy, and more. It also helps us give you the tools you need to be the best version of yourself.

Many people have co-occurring disorders. We make a strategy that helps you deal with all of the things that are holding you back. This doesn’t just help you while you’re here. It helps you regain control over your life. After all, it’s your life, you should be in charge of it.

Staff to Patient Ratio

Another benefit Northpoint recovery offers is the staff-to-patient ratio. We maintain a 2:1 staff to patient ratio. That means two experts helping each individual all day long.

This setup ensures that everyone has access to the support they need, when they need it. Recovery can be a difficult journey. It shouldn’t be more challenging because you need to wait in line for assistance. Our trained and knowledgeable staff will answer all of your questions. They’ll listen to your problems. Together, you’ll come up with healthy ways of dealing with your issues.

Innovative Approaches

We’re always looking to improve our services. That’s why we incorporate activity groups into our programs. These groups include popular activities like hikes, yoga, and mindfulness training.

Addiction doesn’t only affect the mind. It’s important that your body is cared for as well. Our programs help people work on their mind and body at the same time. This goes towards our goal of helping you become your best self.

Nutrition and Diet

We have a professional caterer that brings in healthy, nutritious food daily. The food is fresh and delicious. You’ll get advice on what you should eat, and on how much. This advice helps you meet your goals while you’re here and when you leave. Getting the right nutrition is an important part of recovery.

Out-of-State Rehab Benefits

There are many benefits to getting treatment out-of-state. A change in scenery can help lead to a change in mindset. Many people find that attending treatment elsewhere helps them focus on getting better. It removes the distractions and stress of daily life.

Also, attending rehab out-of-state helps you get away from things that enable your addiction. These things include people that you use or drink with, places you go to get drugs or alcohol, and others. This removes temptations to use. It also helps you focus on what you need to do to meet your goals.

Finally, traveling out of state offers more privacy and confidentiality. Leaving home for treatment decreases the chance you’ll see anyone you know. That helps you focus on your needs. It also protects your privacy and reputation back home.

Everyone gets individualized treatment at Northpoint Recovery. No two experiences will be exactly the same. But there are some things that most people have in common.

Detox

The first step for almost any rehab program is detox. Movies and television portray drug detox as a painful, lengthy, and even dangerous process. Like most things, the truth is much less dramatic.

When you use drugs and alcohol for extended periods of time, your body develops a chemical dependency. It is this chemical dependency that feeds the addiction.

Detox is the first step to getting clean and sober. As your body withdraws, you may experience symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, vomiting, headaches, shaking, and nightmares. Rarely, some addicts experience more severe symptoms such as seizures.

Your detox experience is an individual one, though. Some addicts experience no symptoms, and some have a much rougher time. Your treatment team can help you anticipate the most likely scenario for your own detox experience.

Medical Advice

Everyone also gets medical advice. This includes help managing detox. It also includes assistance with nutrition, prescription medications, and any other health conditions you have. Each person gets education and information to help them thrive while they’re here. They also get advice on how to live a healthier life once they leave.

Therapy

All patients go through one or more therapeutic approaches. Some of the options include support groups, group therapy, and structured 12-step programs. Our staff is also available 24/7 to provide individualized help and attention when you need it.

Recreation

One of the hardest things about recovery is not thinking about your addiction. Everyone selects from a range of activities to help distract them from drug and alcohol cravings. These options include music, art, and exercise. Sometimes these activities are incorporated into different therapies. However, you’ll also have time to enjoy yourself.
