Without a doubt, one of the most frightening aspects of any addiction is the likelihood of experiencing a dangerous and even fatal overdose. And today, it’s more likely than ever to impact you or someone you know.
In fact, drug overdoses have become so common that it’s now the leading cause of death of Americans under 50.
And while this staggering fact is driven mostly by the raging opioid epidemic, the fact is that overdoses involving all types of drugs are rising faster than most people may know.
It’s never been more important, then, to know how to spot the signs of an overdose – and how to do it quickly. Every second counts when someone is overdosing, and getting your friend or loved one medical help a minute early just might be the key to saving their life.
So, what are the symptoms of overdosing on various drugs?
Cocaine – One of the most commonly abused stimulants today (and one of the most loved by the party scene), there are a number of signs you should look out for if you suspect someone is overdosing on cocaine.
There are a number of signs of a cocaine overdose to be aware of. They include:
- Increased sweating, body temperature, or heart rate
- Trouble breathing
- Chest pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Confusion, seizures, tremors
- Anxiety
- Panic
- Paranoia
- Hallucinations
- Delirium
Heroin – Overdoses on this deadly drug have spiked in recent years. In fact, the number of overdose deaths rose by an astounding 533% from 2002 to 2016. Knowing how to recognize the signs of a heroin overdose, then, is especially important today.
Signs of a heroin overdose include:
- No breathing
- Shallow breathing
- Slow and difficult breathing
- Dry mouth
- Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
- Discolored tongue
- Low blood pressure
- Weak pulse
- Bluish-colored nails and lips
- Constipation
- Spasms of the stomach and intestines
- Coma
- Delirium
- Disorientation
- Drowsiness
- Uncontrolled muscle movements
Prescription Meds – The most commonly abused prescription medications today are opioids like OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin. These painkillers produce an intense euphoria and an overpowering sense of sedation similar to that of heroin.
Some symptoms of an overdose on opioids to watch out for are:
- Loss of consciousness
- Unresponsive to outside stimulus
- Awake, but unable to talk
- Breathing is very slow and shallow, erratic, or has stopped
- For lighter skinned people, the skin tone turns bluish purple, for darker skinned people, it turns grayish or ashen.
- Choking sounds, or a snore-like gurgling noise (sometimes called the “death rattle”)
- Vomiting
- Body is very limp
- Face is very pale or clammy
- Fingernails and lips turn blue or purplish black
- Pulse (heartbeat) is slow, erratic, or not there at all
Benzodiazepines, another prescription medication type that’s becoming more abused by the day, include drugs like Xanax, Ativan, and Klonopin.
Some signs of an overdose on benzos include:
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Drowsiness
- Blurred vision
- Unresponsiveness
- Anxiety
- Agitation
- Hallucinations
- Slurred speech
- Ataxia
- Coma
- Weakness
- Altered mental status, impairment of cognition
- Amnesia
- Respiratory depression
- Hypotension
Finding Help During an Overdose
Spotting the signs of an overdose is step one. The next step is calling for professional medical help immediately. Don’t waste a second; don’t worry if they’ll get in trouble for using drugs; don’t just sit around hoping that they’ll snap out of it.
Overdosing is a life and death situation. And the longer you put off calling emergency services, the less likely they’ll be to ever wake up.
Call 9-1-1.
Also, no matter how close you think you may be to a hospital, it’s always advisable to contact emergency services instead of driving the victim yourself. Many times there are lifesaving measures you can be taking right now that are more important than getting them to the hospital sooner.

Addiction doesn’t just hurt the individual who is suffering from it. Instead, it's damaging effects radiate to friends, family members, and even co-workers as well. And for them there is a 12-step support group dedicated specifically to these individuals called Al-Anon.
This important group can really be a lifesaver for people who have been affected by a loved one’s drinking. And luckily, there are plenty of meetings happening in the Blanchard-Glengary area.

Online support groups offer a different type of addiction help that’s convenient and easy to access. A variety of groups exist for every type of need.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any treatment centers in Blanchard-Glengary itself. However, there are several options nearby in some of the bigger towns like Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene.
Some of the best facilities can be found in the even larger cities like Boise.
