Guide to Addiction Resources in Selah, WA

Selah, Washington Overdose, Support, & Treatment Addiction Resources

Known for its agriculture, outdoor recreation, and sports tourism, Selah is a community just north of Yakima in southern Washington.

And though it isn’t the largest city in the state, it certainly is no stranger to big city problems like drug and alcohol addiction.

In fact, nearly half of all motor vehicle deaths involve alcohol in Yakima County. And addiction rates in this area are on par with or higher than the rest of Washington as a whole.

But unfortunately, many residents just don’t know where to turn to for help in overcoming a substance addiction. And that means that countless residents needlessly suffer from addiction for their entire lives just because they don’t know where to go to for support.

This guide to addiction resources in Selah, Washington is designed to show you the absolute best sources of this support in the area. From overdose help and local support groups to.

Local Support Groups Near Selah, Washington

Unfortunately, addiction isn’t just an issue of willpower. It changes both the body and the brain on a fundamental and physical level. And for many, drug-seeking behaviors become so ingrained in their way of life that they have little to no control over getting sober and staying sober.

That’s why it’s so important to have a reliable source of support throughout recovery. This can provide emotional and motivational encouragement, help recovering addicts create a relapse prevention plan, and ultimately give them what they need to stay sober when they’re feeling most tested.

And one of the best places to find this kind of encouragement is in local support groups.

Below are some of the best in the Selah, WA area to consider.

First founded in 1935 in Akron, Ohio, Alcoholics Anonymous has since grown to have more than 2.1 million active members in 2017. Plus, it’s active in nearly every major city in the country and in most nations across the world.

Part of what makes AA so successful is that it is based on the 12-step model for addiction recovery. In fact, it’s Alcoholics Anonymous that invented the model, which is now endorsed by such addiction authorities as the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Plus, meetings are accessible, membership is free and open to all, and of course, member identities are kept fully anonymous.

There are quite a few AA meetings around Selah to have a look at too.

The success of the 12-step approach to recovery caused numerous offshoots of AA. And Narcotics Anonymous was one of the first. It was founded in 1953. And unlike AA, its focus isn’t narrowed to a single substance of abuse. Instead, members struggling with an addiction to heroin, crystal meth, cocaine, and even alcohol are all welcome.

Meetings are usually pretty easy to find and, like AA, are open to anyone looking to get more control over their substance abuse.

Alcoholics themselves aren’t the only ones that suffer during an addiction. And in fact, friends, family members, and even coworkers of addicts can and do all suffer from serious problems resulting from their loved one’s drinking.

Al-Anon is a 12-step group devoted to providing support for these individuals in particular. And like other 12-step meetings, they’re free to attend and typically open to all.

When it comes to sharing, young people have an especially hard time opening up about their friend or family member’s drinking.

Alateen makes things easier for youths and teens by requiring members to be in a certain age group. That way, members don’t feel out of place and will feel more comfortable sharing their stories.

Unfortunately, Alateen meetings aren’t quite as easy to find as other 12-step groups. However, there is one group within 100 miles that you can find below. You can also use the organization’s online meeting search function to find others in the area.

Having an alcoholic parent can cause serious functional problems during childhood. And when left untreated, these problems can remain well into adulthood – and may even get worse along the way.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) is a 12-step group focused on helping these people in particular. And it’s been a great source of healing for so many people struggling to overcome their past traumas.

There are a few ACoA meetings happening around Selah to have a look at below.

For some, the approach to recovery that 12-step groups take just might not mesh well with their personal belief system. And there’s nothing wrong with that, especially since there are a variety of 12-step alternatives to choose from.

SMART Recovery is one of the best of these alternatives. It’s built on real, hard science surrounding addiction recovery. And meetings are run by certified instructors, not the members themselves. It’s also a non-spiritual group too.

There are a number of SMART Recovery groups nearby.

In-person meetings are without a doubt the best way to get support. But not everyone will be able to attend these meetings. Maybe it’s an especially hectic schedule. Or perhaps it’s not having a reliable means of transportation.

No matter what the reason is, there are more flexible support options available. And online support groups are some of the easiest to use.

Meetings take place in a variety of formats: email, real-time chat, video conferencing. It depends on the group.

And while these online groups usually aren’t enough on their own to help someone quit, they are a flexible source of support that might’ve otherwise been unavailable.

Below are some of the closest NA meetings around Selah, Washington.

You can also use the organization’s online meeting search function to find others in the area.+

The Dangers of Overdosing

Drug and alcohol abuse carry very real dangers, especially when it develops into an addiction. They can leave relationships shattered, careers sabotaged, and finances demolished. And on top of it all, they are very bad for your physical health.

One of the biggest physical health dangers comes from the risk of overdosing. Overdoses can cause very real and very serious permanent damage, both to internal organs and to the body as a whole. Some victims spend their whole lives coping with lingering problems.

But beyond that, overdoses can be and often are deadly. In fact, in 2017 alone more than 70 thousand Americans lost their lives to a drug overdose.

And when you add in the fact that around 6 people die from alcohol poisoning in the U.S. every single day, substance abuse has easily become one of the nation’s top killers.

That’s why it’s so important to know just how to spot the signs of an overdose and, equally importantly, how to treat one.

Not all overdoses look alike.

Below are some of the most common symptoms of an overdose with some of the most widely-abused drugs today.

Alcohol – A drink now and then isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the world. But when alcohol is abused at a high level, it can be quite deadly. Here are some of the signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Crystal Meth – This stimulant is well known for the intense high that it causes. But along with that high also comes a bigger risk of experiencing serious health problems. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Prescription Opioids – Typically used to treat pain, prescription opioids like OxyContin and Vicodin are just as deadly as they are addictive. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Benzodiazepines – These prescription medications are usually used to treat depression and anxiety in patients. But as with many other addictive substances, they can be quite deadly when they’re abused. Some signs of a benzodiazepine overdose include:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

Cocaine – A powerful stimulant often used in the club and party scenes, cocaine is both popular and dangerous. Some signs of an overdose on this drug could include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Heroin – One of the most widely known drugs today, heroin is potent, addictive, and deadly. The signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

When treating an overdose, the key is getting professional help quickly and providing accurate, honest information.

As such, if you notice the signs of an overdose, be sure to call 9-1-1 immediately.

The operators there will be able to send an ambulance to your location while also instructing you on how best to handle the situation.

However, if you do have to leave the victim alone and unconscious (even if it is to call 911), be sure to put them into the recovery position. Doing so is easy and only takes a minute. And it can be one of the best things you can do to prevent serious complications like choking or vomiting.

The operator at 911 will also ask you a variety of questions to get a better understanding of the situation. It's vital to answer their questions honestly and not to hold back any information. Lying about, say, whether an illicit substance was involved, can lead to life-threatening consequences.

These questions may include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What drugs have they taken, how much did they take, and how long ago did they take them?
  • Did they have a legal prescription for the drugs?
  • Did they take any other substances at the same time?

The operator may also ask you to administer CPR or perform other treatments to improve the outcome.

Once the EMTs arrive on the scene, they’ll start treating the victim with specialized medical equipment and medications like naloxone. They’ll also probably transfer the victim to a hospital for more complete care and observation.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

The local groups above are a fantastic source of support. And when it comes to staying sober in the long-term, they’re absolutely key to staving off cravings and getting the emotional and motivational encouragement that’s so necessary.

But these groups alone often aren’t enough to push through the first stages of recovery, which are often the hardest.

That’s where professional treatment programs come in. These programs use evidence-based treatments and strategies to give patients the tools and guidance they need to get through the worst parts of getting clean.

And they also offer the absolute best way to ensure a safe and successful recovery.

There are two main types of programs in particular: detoxification and rehabilitation.

Detoxification – This is the first stage of a professional program, and it deals exclusively with the period known as withdrawal. This is when the body is forced to readjust to functioning normally without the help of addictive substances. And it's also when especially uncomfortable symptoms (called withdrawals) assault both the body and the mind.

Some of the most common withdrawals include:

  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Paranoia
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

For many addicts, these withdrawals are often so hard to bear that they will end up turning back to substance abuse just to find a bit of relief from the pain. And often that can lead to a full-blown relapse.

With a professional detox program, these symptoms are treated and made far easier to push through. Some treatments may even reduce the duration too. These programs may use over-the-counter or prescription medicines. And others will rely on more holistic therapies to support the body throughout the process.

And finally, a detox program will also make sure that patients stay safe and healthy throughout the withdrawal process. This is especially important when it comes to drugs like alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines since they can often have deadly withdrawals without the right supervision.

Rehabilitation – If detoxification is focused on healing the physical side of addiction, rehabilitation is concerned with healing the psychological side. And it will usually come right after detox is through.

With treatments like one-on-one counseling, group talk, and various behavioral therapies, these programs help eliminate the compulsive and self-destructive drug-seeking behaviors so common with addiction.

There are three main types of rehab programs too.

  • Inpatient Rehab – The most intensive level of care, inpatient treatment requires patients to actually stay at a rehab facility. This allows for a more controlled environment as well as longer treatment sessions throughout. However, many programs don’t let patients go to work or school at the same time they’re being treated. These programs usually last about 30 days.
  • Outpatient Rehabilitation – Outpatient provides more flexible treatment options. Sessions take place in the evenings, giving patients the freedom to do what they want with their days and their nights. However, it also means that patients won’t receive as high a level of care, possibly increasing the risk of relapse for some. They’ll usually last around 3 months.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – IOPs are designed to offer a high level of care with more flexibility than inpatient can provide. Sessions happen in the evenings just like outpatient. But they’re often longer and take place more frequently throughout the week.

While there are quite a few addiction treatment options in Yakima to the south, just because a facility is close doesn’t mean it’s right for you. And in fact, finding a program that offers the individualized care and attention you need to recover is far more important than choosing one based on proximity.

For this reason, deciding to actually travel outside of Selah for treatment may actually be the best recovery decision you can make.

That’s because doing so can open up the door to a variety of different treatment options and quality services. Plus, non-local treatment centers may also offer greater expertise in treating your specific type of addiction.

And all of this, of course, translates into a more successful recovery.

There are quite a few other benefits to travelling for treatment to consider too. Below are some of the best.

  • Better amenities to make recovery far more comfortable.
  • A new environment to help make it easier to adopt new life strategies.
  • More privacy and confidentiality.
  • A program that, due to its location, can make it less likely you’ll quit the program just because of a bad day.
  • A more solidified commitment to recovery.
