What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship for men and women who have a desire to stop drinking. In fact, that is the only requirement for membership. People who come to meetings never have to worry about paying any type of membership fees.

What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

AA has been around since 1935. It was the first 12-Step organization of its kind. What started in Akron, Ohio has grown, and there are now AA meetings being held all over the world.

There are several AA meetings in the Post Falls area. They are at different locations and times, which makes finding a meeting that works with one’s schedule very easy.

What is Alateen?

Alateen is actually a part of Al-Anon, but it is targeted to meet the needs of young people who have addicted loved ones. For them, it may be very hard to cope with everything they go through on a day-to-day basis. Being able to talk with other teenagers can be so helpful.

What is Alateen?

What are the Risks of a Drug Overdose or Alcohol Poisoning?

It is possible to overdose on drugs or alcohol at any time when someone is using. But the risks are greater under a few different conditions:

  1. When someone is using for the first time.
  2. When someone is mixing drugs with each other or alcohol.
  3. When someone has tried to quit and then suffers from a relapse.

Whether the individual was using a drug or drinking, an overdose is possible if they consume too much. This is an emergency situation, and it is important to call 911 to get immediate help at the scene.

The signs of a drug overdose can be different, depending on the type of drug that was used. But there are some symptoms that are considered relatively common. They include:

  • Severe breathing abnormalities
  • Becoming disoriented or confused
  • Having chest pain
  • Experiencing headaches
  • Having seizures
  • A high temperature
  • Hallucinations
  • Becoming unconscious
  • Becoming severely agitated
  • Paranoia
  • Blue fingertips or lips
  • Becoming unresponsive

It is not uncommon for people to be surprised to learn that alcohol poisoning is an actual condition. Most people think that if they drink too much they will simply vomit or pass out.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Poinsing

Alcohol poisoning is very dangerous, and like a drug overdose, it requires immediate medical attention. The signs include:

  • Excessive vomiting
  • Becoming unconscious and unresponsive
  • Seizures
  • Severe confusion
  • Slower breathing than normal, or even stopped breathing
  • A low body temperature
  • Pale or bluish colored skin

Is Inpatient Treatment Right for You?

An inpatient treatment program is often the best way to recover from an addiction to drugs or alcohol. This form of treatment actually helps people step away from some of the stresses that can be contributing to their addictions. Instead, it allows them to focus completely on doing what they need to do to stop using.

While inpatient rehab is not right for everyone, it can be so beneficial for those who need a higher level of support. They will receive nursing care 24 hours a day, along with the needed therapy to help them stay quit and rebuild their lives.

Some people will be required to begin a drug and alcohol detox program. But it really depends on the type of drug the person is addicted to. For instance, anyone who is addicted to the following will need to detox prior to attending rehab:

Detoxing is a way to remove toxins from the body that are related to the drug use. It can speed up recovery, and make the person much more comfortable than if they were to quit without assistance. It can also help them avoid many of the complications that people often experience during the withdrawal period.

It is not required to attend a drug and alcohol rehab after going through detox. But, it is highly recommended for everyone, and there is a very good reason for that.

Is Going to Alcohol and Drug Rehab Required After Detox?

Detox only addresses the physical side of the addiction. It does not address the psychological side. That means that people can still easily relapse unless they get help for what actually caused the addiction to occur in the first place.

For some people, they started using because they had a co-occurring disorder, such as anxiety or depression. If these, or any other conditions, are not treated, the likelihood of them relapsing is very high.

The right therapy is so important during rehab. Therapists are trained to work with addicts and alcoholics and guide them through this entire recovery process.
