SMART Recovery (Self-Management And Recovery Training) is an evidence-based approach to addiction support that teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance. It also uses scientifically proven techniques for managing cravings and producing self-directed change. Plus, it changes as the field of addiction changes, incorporating new techniques and strategies over time.
SMART Recovery is also recognized by a number of authorities in the field, including the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

While support groups and educational opportunities are helpful in preventing and overcoming addiction, most people will need professional treatment in order to achieve and maintain lifelong sobriety.
Professional treatment provides addicts with the medical and motivational support needed to get clean and, most importantly, stay clean for good.
And in general, there are two stages of professional treatment: detoxification and rehabilitation.
Drug & Alcohol Detoxification – The first stage of recovery, detox is when the body cleanses itself of the addictive substance and the buildup of toxins that have accumulated over the course of the addiction.
And while this stage happens naturally, the absolute safest way of getting through it is with the help of a professional service. Many drugs have dangerous and even deadly withdrawals.
And without expert support during the process, many addicts will simply resort back to using again or, even worse, suffer serious and possibly deadly complications.
Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation – Unfortunately, many people mistakenly think detox is the only necessary step of recovery. In fact, studies have shown that without the added help of rehabilitation afterwards, detox does little to nothing to change long-term drug use.
That’s because addiction is just as mental as it is physical. And while detox helps treat the body’s addiction, rehab treats the brain’s substance abuse problem.
Individual counseling, group talk, behavioral therapies, and many more treatments are used during rehab to help patients rewire their brains and rebuild their lives with healthier habits.
Most rehabilitation programs will fall into one of three categories, each with their own pros and cons. There are inpatient programs, outpatient programs, and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs).
Inpatient Rehab – The most intensive form of rehab, inpatient programs require recovering addicts to stay on the campus property throughout the program. That means going to work, attending school, or even meeting certain family obligations can be quite difficult if not impossible during these programs.
However, the closed environment also offers a more focused recovery experience, often resulting in much lower rates of relapse than other programs. They also typically offer detox services as a part of the program.
These programs usually last around 30 days.
Outpatient Rehabilitation – A more flexible approach to recovery, outpatient programs allow patients to attend evening and weekend treatment sessions while living their day-to-day lives as they see fit.
The tradeoff, however, is a higher risk of falling back into old bad habits and relapsing. Plus, outpatient programs don’t usually offer detoxification services as part of their program.
An outpatient program will generally last around 3 months.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – Similar to normal outpatient programs, an IOP will consist of evening and weekend treatment sessions over the course of around 3 months.
However, sessions of an IOP will usually last longer and take place more frequently throughout the week too. It’s a higher level of care without sacrificing all of your daily responsibilities and obligations.

In fact, according to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), about one-third of all U.S. adults that felt they needed treatment but didn’t receive it cited worry over costs as the main reason for not getting help.
