The Dangers of Overdosing

Addiction can be devastating to an individual on so many levels. It can destroy personal finances, tear down social relationships, and sabotage career goals. But one of the most horrific effects of a substance abuse problem is the risk of an overdose.

Overdoses can cause lifelong problems and injuries. But on top of that, they can be (and often are) incredibly deadly.

What’s worse is that drug and alcohol overdoses are actually on the rise. In 1999, nearly 17 thousand Americans lost their lives to an overdose. In 2017, that number was well over 70 thousand.

Information on Airway Heights Overdose Info

It’s never been more important, then, to be able to identify and treat an overdose than it is today.

Not all overdoses are going to have the same symptoms – and that can make spotting the signs tougher than some might imagine.

Below are some of the most commonly abused drugs today along with some of the signs of an overdose on them.

Prescription Opioids – These drugs are used to treat pain. But they are also highly addictive. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Cocaine – One of the most popular recreational drugs, cocaine can be deadly when taken in large quantities. Some signs of an overdose on this drug could include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Alcohol – Alcohol is without a doubt one of the most widely abused addictive substances in the world. And drinking too much of it can easily lead to a potentially fatal overdose. Here are some of the signs to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Crystal Meth – A horrific drug, crystal meth is as potent as it is addictive. And taking too much of it can very easily lead to an overdose. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Benzodiazepines – These drugs are usually prescribed for mood disorders like depression and anxiety. Some of the most common ones are Xanax and Ativan. But like other prescription drugs, these are also frequently abused for recreational purposes. Overdosing on them can also be quite dangerous. Below are some symptoms of a benzo overdose.

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

HeroinWidely abused and particularly dangerous, the signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

The key to treating an overdose effectively is getting help as quickly as possible. If you do notice the signs of an overdose, then, it’s essential to call 9-1-1 immediately.

The operator on the other end of the line will likely send an ambulance to your location while also instructing you on how best to treat the victim.

They may also ask you a range of questions to get a better handle on the situation. These questions may include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What drugs have they taken, how much did they take, and how long ago did they take them?
  • Did they have a legal prescription for the drugs?
  • Did they take any other substances at the same time?

Answering each of these questions honestly and accurately is key to the best outcomes possible. Do not hold back any important information (i.e., whether the drug was illicit, if the victim didn’t have a legitimate prescription, etc.).

They may also instruct you to begin performing CPR or administering other life-saving actions like inducing vomiting. Be sure to follow their instructions as completely as you can.

And if you do have to leave the side of the victim (even for a minute), be sure to place them into the “recovery position” in order to prevent life-threatening complications like choking.

Once the ambulance arrives, the EMTs will take over treating the victim. They may even use overdose-reversing medications like naloxone.

In the end, getting help quickly and providing accurate, honest information are the two most important parts of treating an overdose.

Local Support Groups Near Airway Heights, WA

Willpower can be incredibly helpful when it comes to overcoming an addiction. But for the overwhelming majority of substance abusers, it isn’t nearly enough on its own. Recovery takes support. And without it, many drug users end up relapsing soon after they begin down their road to sobriety.

Thankfully there are plenty of addiction support groups taking place in and around Airway Heights. Below are some of the closest.

One of the most well-known support groups around the entire world, Alcoholics Anonymous was first founded in 1935 in Akron, Ohio. And since then, it has grown to well over 2.1 million members all over the globe.

Part of what helped AA grow to such enormity is the fact that meetings are highly accessible. Membership is free, its completely anonymous, and groups take place in so many different cities around the country.

Plus, the 12-step model that it first developed has become a basis for many other support groups too. In fact, the National Institutes on Drug Abuse actually named the 12-step approach as one of just 8 evidence-based behavioral therapies proven to help support sobriety.

And around Airway Heights, there are quite a few meetings to choose from.

Just one of many offshoots of AA, Narcotics Anonymous uses a similar 12-step approach that has helped countless substance abusers achieve sobriety. But rather than focusing on one specific addictive substance, NA’s doors are open to any type of substance addict, not just alcoholics.

And like Alcoholics Anonymous, the 12 steps of NA are backed up by hard science too.

There are quite a few meetings nearby to choose from.

Addicts themselves aren’t the only ones who are hurt over the course of a substance abuse problem. And in fact, oftentimes the friends and family members that have watched as their loved one sinks deeper into dependency are left not getting the support they so desperately need.

That’s where Al-Anon comes in.

This 12-step family group is specifically for those around an alcoholic that need help coping, staying healthy, and getting the emotional support they need.

And while these groups aren’t quite as common as AA or NA, there are still quite a few to choose from around Airway Heights.

The youth-oriented branch of Al-Anon, Alateen is specifically focused on younger people who have been negatively impacted by another person’s drinking.

And since members are surrounded by other people their own age, they often feel more comfortable opening up and getting the support they need.

Unfortunately, there’s only one Alateen meeting taking place around Airway Heights, Washington.

Just For Today Alateen

Similar to Al-Anon, this family group is devoted to helping members cope with their loved one’s substance abuse problem – whether it be with heroin, crack, meth, or any other addictive drug.

And while meetings are a bit harder to find than Al-Anon, there are still several taking place nearby.

Growing up in an alcoholic home can lead to a life stunted by childhood trauma. And for many victims, functioning normally and healthily as an adult long after is harder than most people might imagine.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) is a 12-step group devoted specifically to helping this specific segment of the population. And fortunately, there are two meetings in particular that happen just a short drive away.

The only non-12-step group on the list, SMART Recovery takes a specifically non-spiritual approach to recovery that some people might find attractive. It teaches members how to start overcoming cravings and avoiding triggers using only evidence-based techniques and strategies.

Meetings are also led by a certified instructor rather than members themselves.

However, meetings aren’t quite as numerous in the area as other 12-step groups. And unfortunately, there’s only one SMART Recovery meeting taking place nearby.

Not everyone will be able to attend the in-person meetings happening above. It could be because of a tight schedule, a lack of transportation, shame, or any other number of reasons.

Information on Airway Heights Online Support

But it’s important to realize that while face-to-face meetings are the best options, there are in fact online support groups available too.

Below are just a few of the best to help you get started.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

While support is a vital part of any journey towards recovery, it alone often isn’t enough to keep an addict from using again. And for many, it’ll take a professional addiction treatment program to stay sober in the long-term.

Information on Airway Heights Types of Addiction Treatment

Professional treatment programs are helpful for a number of reasons. In addition to offering the absolute best chances at a successful recovery, they also offer a number of other benefits, including:

  • Access to proven therapies and even special medications for making recovery easier
  • Various amenities to make the recovery process far more comfortable
  • Connections to aftercare programs to help keep patients sober long after graduating from a program
  • Additional holistic therapies to help patients develop healthier life strategies
  • A strong social support network

In the end, a professional treatment program is key for getting clean, no matter what kind of addiction is involved.

There are two main types of programs: detoxification programs and rehabilitation programs.

  • Detoxification – This phase of recovery is devoted to helping patients get through the initial stages of quitting an addictive substance. For many, this period is usually the most physically grueling. It’s marked by a host of uncomfortable physical and psychological side effects (called withdrawals) like headaches, nausea, cold sweats, and more. These can be so problematic that many addicts end up relapsing just to find some sort of relief.

A professional program helps keep patients from relapsing while also making the withdrawal process far more comfortable. These programs also help prevent and treat the serious complications that can pop up along the way.

  • Rehabilitation – Rehab is more concerned with the long-term mental side of addiction recovery. These programs focus on providing patients with actionable strategies and techniques for preventing relapse. And without the addition of rehab, detox has beenn to be practically ineffective at preventing future drug use.

Through one-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, and behavioral therapies, patients learn how to recover from their addiction and build a new, drug-free life around themselves.

There are three main types of rehab programs.

  • Inpatient Rehab – Usually a 30-day program, inpatient is what most people imagine when they think of rehab. These programs require patients to stay in a centralized location for treatment. That means eating, sleeping, and leisure activities all occur in the same place as treatment. And while it offers a more focused recovery, it can be quite disruptive for some.
  • Outpatient Rehabilitation – Outpatient provides far more flexibility than inpatient. These programs (typically about 3 months long) allow patients to receive treatment in the evenings while giving them normal freedoms throughout the day. Holding down a job, attending school, and fulfilling family obligations are all much more possible with an outpatient program. However, treatment and recovery aren’t nearly as focused as with inpatient.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – IOPs offer a higher level of care than outpatient without entirely sacrificing flexibility. These programs provide evening treatment sessions that usually last longer and occur more frequently. They will usually last around 3 months as well.

Addiction Treatment Near Airway Heights

Whether you’re searching for drug rehab or alcoholism detox and rehabilitation, finding the right facility for you can be tough.

But given the lack of variety with addiction treatment centers in Airway Heights (there’s only one in town), making the choice to travel for treatment is often the best possible option. Doing so opens up the door to a higher quality of service while also solidifying the patient’s commitment to staying sober.

That’s where Northpoint Recovery comes in. Our Boise, Idaho facility caters to a wide range of addictions along with co-occurring disorders and the social problems that usually come with substance abuse. Each of our programs is empirically based and individualized to meet the unique needs of every patient. And on top of that, we’re even nationally accredited by the Joint Commission – a true testament to our level of service.

But Northpoint Recovery isn’t right for everyone. And only a conversation with a qualified addiction expert can help you determine if you’re a good fit.

However, we'd love to be a driving force in your recovery or that of your loved one. So get in touch today.

Addiction doesn’t have to be a life sentence. And with the right help, you can overcome it.
