Support Groups and Recovery Meetings

Sammamish, WA can offer many different types of free addiction resources in the form of support groups and recovery meetings. These support groups not only teach recovering addicts the skills needed to cope with cravings, but they also teach them how to manage negative emotions.

Most importantly, they’re a platform for recovering substance abusers to share their griefs and strife. Dealing with an addiction is often tiring and difficult. At these meetings, recovering addicts get the compassion that they need from other people. This compassion is often enough to motivate them to stay on the right track.

Almost all relapse prevention plans will include some type of support group or recovery meeting. But, how important is it to have this in one’s aftercare plan?

Studies have shown that peer support is critical to addiction recovery. Without it, addicts are more likely to relapse. That’s not a surprise when you consider that those who feel alone and isolated during recovery don’t usually succeed.

There are many different types of support groups and recovery meetings in Sammamish, WA. We’ll explore some of the options available below.

Designed by alcoholics, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is the first 12 step program to emerge for addiction treatment. These support groups are quite effective, and have helped millions of alcoholics around the world learn how to live without drinking.

Members practice twelve steps and principles on their road to recovery. These steps include making a moral inventory of oneself, admitting wrongdoings, making amends to those who have been wronged, and more.

At the AA meetings, members conduct daily reflections of their behaviors and actions. They also learn more about addiction through speaker discussions, step studies and book studies. Members will also go around the circle to discuss their concerns and feelings. These meetings can get very intimate. The conversation can also get quite personal, which is why anything discussed in these meetings will be kept 100% confidential.

There are a handful of AA meetings in Sammamish. That’s great news for anyone who is looking for a meeting in the city. With that said, if not one of these meetings works for you, consider expanding your search to nearby cities. As Sammamish is located beside many major cities, you’ll find plenty of options.

When choosing which AA meeting in Sammamish to attend, make sure you find out whether the meetings are open or closed. If a meeting is an open meeting, it means that anyone can join. On the other hand, if a meeting is designated as a closed meeting, only recovering alcoholics can attend.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is basically the AA equivalent for recovering drug abusers. These meetings follow the same twelve steps. These support groups were designed after AA since recovering alcoholics were seeing great results. The twelve steps have been studied thoroughly

Much like with AA, meetings consist of daily reflections, step studies, book studies and more. There are also gender-specific meetings and LGBT meetings. These meetings offer a more intimate and personal environment. Some meetings also offer childcare services and are handicap accessible.

Studies show that recovering addicts should go to at least three meetings a week for optimal results. Unfortunately, there are no NA meetings in Sammamish. However, if you’re willing to expand and your search and look at nearby cities, you’ll find a lot of NA meeting times and locations. We’ve listed two to three options for various cities below. Those who are around the addict will often need just as much help and support as the addict. Studies have shown that family members of addicts, in particular, need a lot of support. They're often under a lot of stress. They often feel like they're losing a loved one to addiction, and there's nothing that they can do about it.

Al-Anon is a support group that's designed for those who are close to the addict. Loved ones go to these meetings to learn more about addiction. They also learn how to manage their own behaviors and actions, so that they don't interfere with the addict. But, most importantly, they learn how to love themselves and live a healthy life.

These meetings are for anyone whose life is affected by an addict. There's also a subdivision of Al-Anon known as Alateen. Alateen meetings are for teenagers with an addicted parent.

There is one Al-Anon meeting and zero Alateen meetings in Sammamish.

A new type of recovery meeting has recently emerged in the addiction industry. These meetings are known as Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) meetings. They’re unique because they’re different from 12 step programs, like AA and NA.

Instead of following 12 steps, these meetings teach members behavioral skills that help them deal with cravings and negative thoughts. These meetings follow a 4-point program. They’re science-based and follow all of the latest scientific research and journals on addiction. The meetings evolve as new research comes out.

Anyone can join a SMART meeting. There’s no requirement for membership. All you have to do is have a desire to break addictive behaviors. Members can be addicted to not only drugs and alcohol, but also gambling, sex and any other undesirable activities or behaviors.

There aren’t any SMART meetings in Sammamish. However, if you’re willing to expand your search by a 15-mile radius, you’ll find some options.

Familiarize with the Different Types of Rehab Programs

Although free resources that offer social connection can aid in one’s recovery process, this, alone, may not help every recovering addict break free from an addiction. Professional treatment will cover everything that support groups and recovery meetings miss.

Substance abuse treatment involves medical detox, behavioral therapy and more. There are many different types of treatment centers. Some specialize in dual diagnosis treatment, while others may specialize in taking a more holistic approach.

When choosing a rehab facility, one of the key factors you should consider is the level of care that it can provide. This will determine the amount of supervision and help that you’ll receive. Each level of care offers its own benefits. There are three main levels of care. They include:

  • Residential inpatient treatment. With this treatment option, patients move into the rehab facility for anywhere from 28 to 90 days. Patients will need to take an extended leave of absence, as they will live at the alcohol and drug treatment center for the entire duration of their treatment. The good news is that patients will receive around-the-clock care.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program. Instead of living at the rehab facility, patients will only need to go to the facility when they need treatment. Most patients receive anywhere from 4 to 8 hours of therapy every day.
  • Outpatient treatment. The most flexible option to choose from is outpatient treatment. Patients can receive as much treatment as they’d like. Some patients may opt for only several hours of treatment each week. Those who choose an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) must get at least 9 hours of treatment every week.

At this time, there are no inpatient or outpatient rehab and detox centers in Sammamish. Those who would like professional help from a rehab center will find many options in nearby cities.

The Difference Between Detox Centers and Rehab Centers

There's a slight difference between detox centers and rehab centers. Detox centers only offer detox services, whether its medical detox, holistic detox or a combination of both. They do not offer any other treatment modalities.

Rehab centers, on the other hand, offer the whole package. They usually provide some type of detox service at the start of treatment. Once patients have completed the detox part of the treatment, they'll move onto other treatment modalities, like counseling and behavioral therapy.

Detox, itself, does not constitute as a comprehensive treatment plan. This is because detox only aids in the removal of toxins from the body. It may help ease withdrawal symptoms. At times, it may even get rid of them completely.

There are two main detox options to choose from: medical detox and holistic detox. Both have their own merits, which is why many rehab and detox facilities will often incorporate both into their detox program. Let's take a look at what is involved with each detox option.

Medical detox uses medications to harmonize the chemicals in the body. This detox process will prevent the chemicals from fluctuations. As a result, it can prevent some pretty serious and life-threatening symptoms, like delirium tremens.

This type of detox is, at times, necessary. Some substances are dangerous to withdraw from. Some of these substances are:

  • Heroin
  • Prescription opioids
  • Alcohol
  • Xanax
  • Valium

Patients who opt for medical detox also report having a higher quality of life. They are more likely to struggle less with psychological symptoms, and also more likely to be social. These patients also see improvements in their mood.

Holistic detox is a very different beast from medical detox. Those who opt for this option will not rely on medications at all. Instead, they'll rely on natural approaches to detox. In most cases, this includes dietary changes, relaxation techniques and exercise.

Anyone can opt for this type of treatment. Depending on the substances that are abused, holistic detox can be used as a replacement or as a supplement to medical detox.

The Pros and Cons of Choosing an Inpatient Rehab Facility

Many addiction experts recommend that recovering addicts try an inpatient rehab treatment before an outpatient one. They also recommend this type of treatment for anyone who has abused substances for a long period of time or for anyone who is likely to experience dangerous withdrawal symptoms.

This is because an inpatient rehab facility, like Northpoint Recovery, can offer a more personalized and intense type of care. There are many pros and cons of choosing an inpatient facility over an outpatient one. We’ll explore some of the advantages and disadvantages below.

Pros

  • Free of negative influences. As patients are in a new environment, they’re free of negative influences. They can escape from toxic people in their life and any triggers that may be found in their home environment.
  • 24/7 support and care. Dealing with an addiction is scary. Many people appreciate the fact that they can reach out for help whenever they need it.
  • Feeling part of a community. As patients stay in a rehab facility, they slowly become part of a community. They make new friends and support network with the other patients. It’s also easier to get sober when everyone at the treatment center has the same goals.
  • Access to more therapies. Depending on the facility, patients can enjoy a wide range of therapies. There’s art therapy, music therapy, equine therapy, behavioral therapy, group therapy, individual therapy, and more.
  • Structure for developing better habits. Addicts often have poor nutrition and sleep schedules. Those who stay at an inpatient facility will have their entire day planned out. These routines will help them develop better and healthier lifestyle habits.

Cons

  • Restricted in where you can go. With inpatient care, patients cannot leave the premises. This means that they will not be able to take care of work, home and familial obligations. Those who have children or pets will need to make arrangements for them.
  • Cost of treatment. Many people may baulk at the cost of inpatient care. This type of treatment program is often the most expensive. This is because patients receive around-the-clock supervision from a bunch of professionals.
