Alcoholics Anonymous has been around since the mid 1930s. This organization was founded as a way to help alcoholics get the support they needed to quit drinking. Since its beginning, AA has been able to assist millions of people all over the world. The program began in the United States, but it has grown to a worldwide organization.
AA is very open and accepting. The only requirement for membership is that you have a desire to stop drinking. No one has to pay any fees or dues in order to attend a meeting. They are a non-profit organization, and other recovering alcoholics lead the meetings.
As you might expect, you can find AA meetings that are both large and small. Some people enjoy being able to attend larger meetings because they don’t feel singled out. Others appreciate the intimacy that going to a smaller meeting provides for them. You will need to decide which works best for you.
You’ll find that for the most part, the meetings are quite informal. They usually have a theme, which can change from week to week. Some meetings involve speakers, whereas others may be book studies, or studies on one of the 12 Steps.
What you’ll quickly learn is how welcoming the other participants are. They will be very happy to see you, but they won’t put you on the spot. It will be good for you to tell your story at some point, but you won’t have to share until you’re ready.

What is Narcotics Anonymous?
Narcotics Anonymous is very similar to AA, but there are some differences. They follow the 12 Step program of recovery, with some minor differences in the wording of the steps. NA was created as an answer for drug addicts who were looking for something similar to AA.
When you go to a meeting, you’ll be welcomed with open arms. Their meetings are both large and small, and they tend to be even less formal than AA meetings. They don’t charge any fees to attend. All you need is a desire to stop using drugs.
What’s most interesting about NA is that alcoholics often prefer it over AA. Many feel that they’re more accepting, and NA doesn’t mind at all if an alcoholic joins. They work with all types of addicts.

You may be surprised at the variety of people who attend NA meetings. You’ll see that they come from all walks of life. There are people there who are professionals, and those who are blue-collar workers. You’ll see single moms, hard working dads, and every other type of person you can think of.
A drug addiction can happen to anyone; even those whom you might assume to be “immune” to such a problem. The people at the meeting you attend should be very welcoming to you. They won’t ask you to share your story until you want to share. You can just sit down and listen to others talk for as long as you need to.
Above all, don’t worry if you feel out of place. Everyone at the meeting was once in your shoes. It won’t be long before you meet others and get to make friends.
There are many Bellevue NA meetings for you to choose from. You won’t need to worry that it will be hard to find the right one for you.

What is Al-Anon?
Al-Anon was founded as a way to help families whose loved ones are battling addictions. They hold weekly meetings in various locations all over the country.
Far too often, people tend to forget about the families. They suffer just as much as the addict does, and sometimes they suffer even more. An addict’s loved ones often don’t have anyone they can talk to about the challenges they’re facing. Al-Anon is so beneficial for them because it solves that problem.
Anyone in the family is allowed to attend an Al-Anon meeting, regardless of age. They’ll find support, encouragement and help from other families facing the same situations.

What is Alateen?
Alateen is a part of Al-Anon, and they are designed to specifically help teenagers and older children of addicts. For a young person whose mom or dad battles addiction, life can be very lonely. They may not know anyone else who is facing the problems they face on a regular basis. This organization offers them a safe place to talk and get advice and help.
For teens who attend Alateen meetings, they’ll find that they’re never alone. The challenges they’re facing are unlike anything they’ve ever dealt with before. It’s helpful to talk with others their own age and get support.

What is the Risk of Drug Overdose or Alcohol Poisoning for Someone With an Addiction?
If you or a loved one is addicted to drugs or alcohol, you need to know that the risks of overdosing are high. You can suffer from an overdose because you used too much in one sitting. It’s also quite common for people to overdose when they attempt to quit using drugs on their own, and they relapse.
We’d like to help you avoid either situation. But, you should know how to respond if you’re ever faced with one of these emergencies.
If you suspect that a friend or family member has overdosed on drugs, please call 911 right away. Don’t put it off. Even if you’re wrong, it’s better to be too cautious when you’re talking about a loved one’s life. If you’re right, it could be you who saves them from a fatal consequence.
If they have overdosed, they will generally have some common symptoms, such as:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Stomach cramps
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness and loss of balance
- Seizures
- Chest pain
- Drowsiness
- A high or low body temperature
- A fast or slow pulse rate
- A fast or slow breathing rate
- Falling into a coma
- Cool and sweaty, or hot and dry skin
- Blood in the stool
The signs of alcohol poisoning can be a little harder to identify. You may just assume your loved one is drunk, and that they just need to sleep it off. It’s important to know how to recognize the difference.
Some of the signs of alcohol poisoning include:
- Severe confusion
- A drop in body temperature
- Pale skin, or even bluish skin
- Becoming unresponsive, but remaining conscious
- Passing out
- Extremely slow breathing
- Vomiting
All of these are signs that you need to get your loved one help right away. If you live close enough to an emergency room, you should take them there. If you don’t, it’s best to call 911 for help.
Do You Need to go to Detox or Rehab for Treatment?
For some people, any of the above options aren’t appropriate ways for them to recover. The question is, how do you know if they’re right for you, and if you need to consider professional treatment?
You might be better suited for drug and alcohol detox or rehab if you:
- Have tried to quit using before in the past, without success.
- Have a desire to quit, but don’t think it’s possible.
- Have noticed that you continually need to increase how much you use or drink to feel the effects.
- Have family urging you to get professional help.
- Have noticed a significant negative impact on your life because of your substance abuse problem.
If any of these apply to you, it’s best to consider getting professional help. You’ll find that there are so many benefits, and it’s truly the best way to recover.
The Benefits of Getting Professional Addiction Help
There are so many reasons why people choose to go to detox and rehab to recover from their addictions. You may not realize it, but your substance abuse problem is really very complex. It’s something that impacts you in every possible way – physically, psychologically and spiritually. It’s often not enough to talk with a therapist or to meet regularly with other addicts.
