Not all overdoses are going to look the same for everyone. Individual physiology, genetics, general health, drug type, and more will all come into play in how an overdose physically and psychologically presents itself.
On top of that, many people tend to mix different drugs, complicating the process even further.
Having said that, there are a few specific symptoms to be on the lookout for when it comes to identifying the signs of an overdose for a particular drug type.
Below are some of the most notable for some of the most commonly abused substances today.
Alcohol – Some signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for include:
- Confusion
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
- Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
- Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
- Low body temperature (hypothermia)
- Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened
Heroin – In most cases, symptoms of a heroin overdose include:
- AIRWAYS AND LUNGS
- No breathing
- Shallow breathing
- Slow and difficult breathing
- EYES, EARS, NOSE AND THROAT
- Dry mouth
- Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
- Discolored tongue

Cocaine – Overdosing on cocaine can cause a number of symptoms, including:

- Fast or difficulty breathing

Prescription Opioids – Prescription opioid overdose can result in symptoms like:
- Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
- Falling asleep or loss of consciousness

- Choking or gurgling sounds
- Limp body
- Pale, blue, or cold skin
Crystal Meth – An overdose on crystal meth may cause the following symptoms:
- Agitation
- Chest pain
- Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
- Heart attack
- Irregular or stopped heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing
- Very high body temperature
- Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
- Paranoia
- Seizures
- Severe stomach pain
- Stroke
Benzodiazepines – Some signs of an overdose on benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, etc.) include:
- Drowsiness
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Weakness
- Slurred speech
- Lack of coordination
- Difficulty breathing
- Coma
What to Do During an Overdose
Once you’ve identified the signs of an overdose, the very next step you take should be to call 9-1-1 immediately. Every second counts when it comes to an overdose. And that means that hesitating, even for a few minutes, can mean the difference between life and death.
If you have to leave the victim to make the call, be sure to place them in the recovery position so that their airway remains clear.
After you’ve reached emergency services, they’ll likely dispatch an ambulance to your location. In the meantime, though, the operators on the other end of the line will help guide you through life-saving measures that will help ensure the absolute best outcome for the victim.
They may, for instance, advise you to:
- Perform CPR
- Induce vomiting
- Rehydrate the victim
It’s important to listen to the operator and perform actions exactly how you’re instructed while you wait for the ambulance to arrive. Once it does, the emergency service workers will be able to administer a higher level of care and may even use overdose-combating medications like naloxone to reverse the toxic effects.
In most cases, the victim will be transported to a hospital or emergency room for more intensive care and observation.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
When most people think of 12-step support groups, they imagine Alcoholics Anonymous or AA. And it shouldn’t come as any surprise that AA is so widely known – it’s one of the largest support groups in the entire world.
In fact, since its founding in Akron, Ohio in 1935, AA has grown from just two members to having almost 2.1 million active members around the world. Plus, there are well over 120 thousand different groups too.
Sponsorship is a key part of Alcoholics Anonymous (and other 12-step groups). Sponsorship is a type of mentorship program, where more experienced AA members help keep others accountable, responsible, and – most importantly – sober.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)
The second most well-known 12-step group, Narcotics Anonymous or NA isn't quite as big as AA, but it's still more sizeable than most other support groups.
Founded in 1953, NA has since grown to more than 67 thousand different weekly meetings in 139 countries around the world.
And rather than focusing on a single substance of abuse like alcohol, Narcotics Anonymous aims to help addicts of all kinds, whether the substance of abuse is heroin, cocaine, marijuana, or even booze itself. NA is unique in that it doesn’t make a distinction in how it approaches addiction for different drugs.
The only prerequisite for NA members is that they have a desire to get control over their addiction and achieve sobriety.
Like Alcoholics Anonymous, there are a wide variety of NA meetings across the State of Washington.

Al-Anon for Family & Friends
While the consequences of substance abuse can be devastating for the addict themselves (legal problems, poverty, severe organ damage, etc.), they aren’t the only ones hurt by an addiction.
Friends, family members, classmates, coworkers – all can be and often are negatively impacted by an individual’s addiction.
For some, it might be a lack of responsibility that leads to not being able to fulfill certain obligations. For others, it might be emotional abuse, alienation, codependency, and so much more.
But no matter what the damage is, one thing always remains true – the people around addicts need support too.
And for them, there are groups like Al-Anon. This group focuses on healing the damage of addiction inflicted upon others. It can also provide guidance in helping members better handle a friend or loved one falling prey to the cycle of addiction.

12-step groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are extremely well-known across the country and around the world. But even still, they are far from the only choice when it comes to getting life-changing addiction support that’s both free and scientifically proven to help support recovery.
Whether it’s because of conflicting ideas about the nature of recovery, a disagreement on the spirituality that should be involved, or even just the time or location of 12-step meetings that makes them less attractive, most cities across America have a number of other addiction support groups to choose from.
Three of the most popular are SMART Recovery, Secular Organizations for Sobriety, and Moderation Management.

While 12-step groups tend to teach powerlessness in the face of addiction, SMART Recovery instead focuses on the self-empowerment. They present common sense and scientifically proven strategies for abstaining from drugs or alcohol and developing a healthier, more positive lifestyle.

One of the most important questions you should ask is what kind of program a facility offers. In general, there are four main types of addiction treatment programs: detoxification, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehab, and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs).
Detoxification (5 days to several weeks) – Detox is the initial stage of recovery, and it's an essential part of every recovery program. This phase is when the body re-acclimates to functioning without the help of the addictive substance. It's also one of the most difficult stages to get through without support since it's marked by extremely uncomfortable physical and mental symptoms known as withdrawals.
A professional program will be able to administer medications and therapies that can make this process much more bearable and even shorter in some cases. It will also help monitor the health of your body along the way since these withdrawals can sometimes be fatal – either on their own or because of the complications they often cause.
At-home detox, then, can be an incredibly dangerous process and is not recommended under any circumstances.
A detox program can either be a standalone service or combined with a more comprehensive rehabilitation service like an inpatient program.
Inpatient Rehabilitation (~30 days) – After detox comes rehabilitation – the part of treatment that focuses on the mental side of addiction rather than just the physical. It’s worth noting that without rehab, detox is statistically unlikely to prevent future drug use at all.
And when it comes to rehabilitation, inpatient programs are widely considered to be the "gold standard" of treatment. That's because these programs are both highly controlled and extensive. Patients are required to stay on the campus grounds at all times – meaning the risk of relapse is quite low, and they must focus entirely on their recovery throughout the course of the program.
The downside of an inpatient program, however, is that it can be quite disruptive to daily life. Patients typically won't be able to go to school or their job, and some may not even allow patients to leave for family obligations either. Plus, they're typically more expensive than other options.
Outpatient Rehab (~3 months) – An outpatient program, on the other hand, is all about flexibility. Patients in these types of programs will usually attend evening treatment sessions several times a week for their addiction issues. And while many of the same therapies as inpatient programs are used, the actual time spent in treatment is far lower in an outpatient program.
This, of course, can translate to a higher rate of relapse in some cases. And that’s especially true because the environment isn’t nearly as controlled since patients are free to do whatever they please during the day.
As a result, these programs are great for individuals with an especially mild addiction or who are just getting out of inpatient care and use outpatient programs as a form of aftercare. Either way, it’s a less costly and time intensive type of treatment that might be a good fit for some.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) (~3 months) – A step up from outpatient without the time and financial costs of inpatient care, IOPs offer a happy medium between the two. Patients in these programs attend evening treatment sessions that occur more frequently and last longer than an outpatient program.
IOPs are great for people who need a higher level of care than inpatient can offer but can't quite afford to commit to a full inpatient program.
