And when it comes to health risks as dangerous as an overdose every second counts. The quicker you identify it then, the better their chances will be of avoiding permanent damage.
Have a look at the symptoms of overdosing on some of the most commonly abused drugs below.
Alcohol – According to the Mayo Clinic, signs of alcohol poisoning include:
- Confusion
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
- Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
- Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
- Low body temperature (hypothermia)
- Passing out (unconsciousness) and can’t be awakened

- They cannot be awakened or are unable to speak
- Their breathing or heartbeat slows or stops
If you recognize the signs of a drug overdose, the very first step should be to call 9-1-1. After contacting these medical professionals, you’ll likely be given instructions on what to do next.
They may, for instance, tell you to roll the victim on their side to prevent aspiration. Or they may ask you to induce vomiting to reduce the damage and help get the drugs out of their system. The specifics depend on both the drug itself and the situation.
They will likely also send an ambulance to your location to take the victim to a medical center.

Alcoholics Anonymous, also known as AA, is an organization that was designed to assist alcoholics during their recoveries. It was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1935 and today, has more than 2.1 million members and over 118 thousand different groups around the world.
Like other anonymous addiction support groups, AA utilizes the 12 Step Program. This program is built off of the 12 core principles of recovery that the founders believed were the quickest and most effective way of achieving sobriety.
And while programs like Alcoholics Anonymous don’t necessarily work for everyone (just like any other addiction treatment), this group is without a doubt one of the best and most accessible ways of building a strong support network. And that can be essential for maintaining sobriety.

Narcotics Anonymous, also known as NA, is another support group that focuses on helping addicts overcome cravings, kick their substance abuse habits, and maintain sobriety for the long-term.
Like Alcoholics Anonymous, NA is built on the fundamental principles of the 12 steps. Unlike AA, however, Narcotics Anonymous welcomes addicts of all kinds, not just alcoholics. Don’t be confused though – this program is just as open to alcohol addicts as it is to any other kind.
NA has a similar advantage as AA in that it is widespread, freely accessible, and open to all. Today, there are more than 67 thousand different weekly meetings taking place in 139 countries around the world.
And just like AA, there’s a fair amount of science backing up the effectiveness of this enormous program.
