What is Alcoholics Anonymous and What are the Benefits?

Alcoholics Anonymous was the first 12-Step support group of its kind. It was founded in 1935 by two men who had a vision for a peer counseling program for alcoholics. Both of them battled alcoholism, and they had a desire to stop drinking. They knew that group therapy was powerful, and AA was the result.

The organization got its start in Akron, Ohio. From there, it grew tremendously. Today, you can find AA meetings all over the country, and there are even some in countries worldwide. Millions of people have been helped because of the vision that two men had.

It is helpful to talk with others who know what you are going through. You know that they will not be judging you because of your experiences. They have all been there, and they understand.

When you go to an AA meeting, you will be welcomed warmly when you walk in. You will not be made to feel uncomfortable, and no one will ask you to share the first time you come. If you feel comfortable and ready, they will be eager to hear your story.

There are many types of AA meetings. Some of them may feature special speakers on a regular basis. Others will focus more on the 12 Steps and the group will work on each step together. You will find large groups and small ones. There are many of them in your area, so you will find it easy to find the one that feels like a good fit for you.

You also will not be asked to pay any membership fees. It is free for you to attend AA meetings as long as you have a desire to stop drinking. If you choose an open meeting, you can even bring someone along with you, even if they do not have a drinking problem.

There are many AA meetings in the Hayden area. The information listed below will help you locate one that will work for you.

What is Narcotics Anonymous and What are the Benefits?

The next type of 12-Step organization that was developed was Narcotics Anonymous. It was founded in 1955 as a way for drug addicts to find the same type of support that was offered in AA. The founders saw that the group therapy model was working well, but drug addicts were not able to attend AA meetings.

At Narcotics Anonymous, anyone with any type of addiction is welcome to attend; even alcoholics. They do not discriminate because they believe that at the core, all addictions are the same. Like AA, the only requirement is to have a desire to stop using.

There are so many benefits to attending NA meetings. You get the opportunity to talk with others who know the challenges you face. Group members are able to support each other through their struggles, and lean on each other. It is a wonderful place to be for anyone who wants to recover from drug addiction.

Some people say that NA meetings tend to be a little bit more open and inviting than AA meetings. They are pretty informal, and the people there tend to become really good friends. You may also notice that there are some people from your community that you recognize. That is because drug addiction really does not discriminate. It can happen to anyone.

You may feel a bit nervous when you go to an NA meeting for the first time. Like AA, if the meeting is open, you are welcome to bring a friend along with you for support. The other participants will probably introduce themselves to you, and they may even ask for your phone number.

At NA, the groups become more like a family. These are people who have seen the ugliest sides of drug addiction. You will learn so much from listening to their stories. When you are ready, you can share your own.

There are several Hayden NA meetings that you can choose from. The following list will help you find them.

What is Al-Anon?

Al-Anon was founded because there was a need for some type of support system for the families of addicts and alcoholics. If that is who you are, and you have someone at home with an addiction, you need that type of support. Like other groups, they have regular meetings; usually they are held on a weekly basis.

Attending an Al-Anon meeting provides you with a way to take care of yourself in the midst of your challenges. Everyone in the room will know what you are going through, and they will support you. You can tell your story and receive encouragement from the other participants. Likewise, you will be able to encourage them as well.

Going to an Al-Anon meeting can provide you with so much support from others facing similar challenges. There are several Al-Anon meetings in the Hayden area.

What is Alateen?

Alateen is a part of Al-Anon, but it is designed specifically to speak to teenagers and young adults. There are some groups that will allow older children to attend. This component of Al-Anon is so important because it provides young people with a source of support.

Quite often, young people do not feel as though they have anyone they can turn to. They may not feel comfortable talking with adults about what they are going through. They may also feel like they do not want to burden their friends. Alateen is a place where they can safely talk about their feelings. They will be met with other people their own ages that will encourage them and support them.

There is one Alateen meeting in the Hayden area. You can find it here:

Just For Today Alateen
Wednesdays at 7:00 PM
St. Pius X Catholic Church
625 Haycraft Ave.
Coeur d’Alene, ID
Map
Online
Facebook

It is also possible to join in with other teens and young people for online Alateen meetings. There are several of them held during the week at different times. An adult always moderates the meetings. You must be between the ages of 13 and 18 to chat.

Also, please keep in mind that anyone can come to an Al-Anon meeting if this one is not convenient for you.

Additional Ways to Find Addiction Recovery Resources and Support

You may be concerned about going to a support group to get help. If you are, there is no need to worry. 12-Step meetings can be helpful, but the truth is that they are not for everyone.

Do You Have a Friend or Family Member at Risk for a Drug Overdose or Alcohol Poisoning?

One of the biggest concerns that many people have is that someone they love will overdose on drugs or alcohol. It is often what keeps them awake at night, and why they try so hard to get their loved one to quit using.

The reality is that if someone has an addiction, there is always the chance that they will overdose. But there are certain circumstances that will make it more likely.

Overdoses are most common among people who attempt to stop using and then relapse. This is because their tolerance levels have changed and when they go back to using, they take too much. An overdose can also happen whenever someone uses a drug for the first time that they are not familiar with.

It is very important to know how to recognize an overdose or alcohol poisoning. Both have certain symptoms that you can look for.

If someone you love has alcohol poisoning, there are several symptoms they may have. These include:

  • Bluish-tinted skin or pale skin
  • Severe breathing problems
  • Passing out
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Seizures
  • Excessive vomiting
  • Confusion or even appearing delirious

If someone you love has suffered from a drug overdose, you may notice some of the following symptoms:

  • Falling asleep and snoring loudly
  • Dizziness
  • Seizures
  • Loss of balance
  • Visual disturbances
  • Lips and fingertips that turn blue
  • Going into a coma
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Extreme confusion
  • Breathing problems
  • Hallucinations

If you think that someone you love has overdosed on drugs or has alcohol poisoning, it is critical for you to act quickly. Sometimes the symptoms of an overdose can mimic the symptoms of being intoxicated or high. You may second-guess yourself, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Call 911 right away. Stay with the individual until help arrives, and give the paramedics any information they need. If you act quickly, you may just save their life.

Should You be Considering Professional Addiction Treatment in Hayden?

In most cases, someone who is new to recovery needs to begin by going through a professional rehab program. This may be something that you should consider if you have never had any form of treatment at all.

There are a lot of signs that indicate you should consider going to rehab. They include:

  • Having several quit attempts in the past that failed.
  • Having someone you love tell you that you need to go to rehab.
  • Doubting your own ability to quit using successfully.
  • Suffering from a mental health condition (co-occurring disorder) that also accompanies your addiction.
  • Having a desire to quit, but truly believing that it is not possible for you.

If you can relate to even one of the items on this list, you may want to talk with someone about it. Many treatment centers offer free phone assessments that will help you find out if it is the right choice for you.

There are certain types of drugs that require patients to go through detox prior to rehab. If you are using an opiate, opioid or a stimulant drug, it may be a requirement for you. The same is true if you are an alcoholic.

Drug and alcohol detox is a process to help you get through withdrawals easier. You may be given medications that can help to control your symptoms. It may also help you avoid experiencing some of the complications that can occur when people stop using.

There are so many benefits to attending rehab after you have detoxed. You will be able to work with a therapist to learn more about your addiction. Their job is to determine the cause of your substance abuse problem.

The right drug and alcohol rehab will offer you a personalized treatment plan to meet your unique needs. It may include group therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or any other treatments that might be best for you.
