How Can Narcotics Anonymous Help You?

Narcotics Anonymous is an organization that was founded to provide support for recovering drug addicts. Their vision is that:

Every addict in the world has the chance to experience our message in his or her own language and culture and find the opportunity for a new way of life.

NA has been around for decades, and it is a non-profit fellowship of men and women. Anyone who is any type of addict is welcome to attend their meetings. This includes people who are alcoholics. The only requirement you must meet is to have a desire to quit using.

This organization has helped to change the lives of drug addicts all over the world. They provide a safe place where people can feel free to share about their struggles. You’ll find a lot of encouragement and support when you attend.

NA meetings are very low-key and laid back. The other members at the meetings are just like you. They’re people from all walks of life, professions, nationalities and races. What you’ll quickly discover is how non-discriminatory addiction truly is. It can happen to anyone; even people you’d never suspect to be susceptible to it.

During your first meeting, you’ll be welcomed warmly. You won’t feel pressured to share too much about yourself until you’re ready. The others will invite you to listen and then chime in if you’d like to. There may be some time afterwards for you to talk with other members one-on-one.

Be prepared, because you’re going to hear some incredible stories. So many NA members have been through terrible situations. You may be able to relate to many of them, and their success will give you hope.

Of course, there is a chance that you won’t feel like you fit in with the others in your group. If that’s the case, please don’t feel discouraged. There are a lot of meetings happening in your area. All you need to do is try another one until you feel comfortable.

How Can Alcoholics Anonymous Help You?

Alcoholics Anonymous is known as the very first support group of its kind. Two men named Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith started it in Akron, Ohio in 1935. Both of these men were alcoholics, and they saw a need for a peer-led support group. It took a lot of work, but this organization slowly grew into what we know it to be today.

Millions of recovering alcoholics have attended AA meetings and benefited from them. There is one in almost every city in the United States. You’ll find that attending meetings can help you in a lot of different ways. It’s helpful to know that there are others facing the same challenges you’re facing. It can also be very good to talk to others about what you’re going through.

One thing is for sure – alcoholism recovery doesn’t happen by accident. It also rarely ever happens for people when they try to do it alone. You need the support of others to help you get through this. The time you spend in AA will be very rewarding, and becoming a member is a decision you’ll be happy you made.

AA meetings can be big or small, and there are several different types. Some groups make it a point to celebrate birthdays once a month. You’ll probably encounter meetings that cover various topics every week. Some may take their time going through the 12 Steps, and others may feature special speakers now and then.

It’s important to remember that you won’t be put on the spot when you go to your first meeting. The other members will be friendly to you, but they won’t pressure you to speak. You can sit in your chair and listen to others share about their experiences for as long as you want to.

Before long, you’ll get to know the other members. You’ll feel more comfortable with them, and you may even become friends with some of them. Many AA members say that the people they attend meetings with are more likely family.

Going to an AA meeting in or around the Edmonds area can change your life for the better. You’ll find that you will meet so many new people who are all on the same journey you’re on. You can find several meetings in the area, including the following.

Additional Ways to Get Addiction Recovery Help

Attending an AA meeting or an NA meeting can be very helpful for you. However, these types of groups aren’t right for everyone. People are all very different, and they all recover in their own ways, at different rates. That’s why you need to know what other options you have available to you.

Families of Addicts Can Get Help Through Al-Anon

Perhaps you have a loved one at home who is battling alcoholism or a drug addiction. There’s nothing that can compare to the heartbreak you experience on a daily basis. Families often bear the brunt of pain when it comes to dealing with addiction. If this is the situation you’re in, you need to know that there is help available for you as well.

Al-Anon was created as a way to offer support and encouragement for the families of alcoholics and addicts. They are a non-profit organization, and your local group will hold meetings on a weekly basis.

When you attend a meeting, the other people there will know what you’re dealing with. Participants usually take turns sharing about their experiences. It helps to know you’re not alone, and they may even have words of wisdom to help you. Even if they don’t, sometimes it means a lot to know that your feelings are being heard and understood.

An Al-Anon meeting in or around the Edmonds area can help you in so many ways. You’ll find that they’re held all throughout the week at different locations in the area.

Alateen for Teenagers and Older Children

Please note that anyone can attend an Al-Anon meeting, regardless of their age. However, some teenagers and older children might not feel comfortable there. It makes sense that they would feel better being around others their own age. That’s why Alateen is such an important resource for them.

Alateen offers young people the chance to talk about the challenges they’re facing in their own lives. Their meetings provide a safe space where they can feel comfortable to share with others. The Dangers of a Drug Overdose or Alcohol Poisoning

Everyone knows that drug overdoses and alcohol poisoning are dangerous, and they can even be fatal. But do you know if someone you love is at risk?

The fact is that anyone who uses any type of substance could accidentally take too much of it. This can happen with regular use, but it frequently happens when people attempt to quit using on their own.

It’s very important to understand how tolerance works when you’re talking about overdose risk. When an addict begins using, their tolerance levels are usually fairly low. As their substance abuse continues, tolerance increases. This means that they need to use more of the drug or alcohol to get the same effects.

When they quit using, tolerance levels begin to drop, and this can happen almost immediately. When someone relapses, they will often go back to using the same amount they did previously. What they don’t realize is that this amount is going to be too much for their bodies to handle. The result is an overdose that can be fatal if left untreated.

Unfortunately, the symptoms of alcohol poisoning can look the same as being drunk. This causes a lot of cases to go ignored, and it results in many senseless deaths that could have been prevented.

If you have a loved one who is an alcoholic, they could inadvertently drink too much at any time. If they do, you should know how to tell if they have alcohol poisoning. Look for the following symptoms:

  • A dangerously low body temperature
  • The onset of seizures
  • Changes in skin color
  • Constant vomiting
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Shallow or irregular breathing
  • Impaired coordination

Your loved one could go into a coma, or experience symptoms that aren’t on this list. Alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency and it needs to be treated right away.

There are a lot of different symptoms that can indicate a drug overdose. If you have a friend or family member who is an addict, the idea of them overdosing probably terrifies you, and for good reason. While symptoms can vary based on the type of drug being used, you may notice any of the following:

  • Problems with coordination and balance
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Breathing that has stopped or slowed
  • Hallucinations
  • Deep snoring
  • Skin that turns a blue color
  • Stomach cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Bouts of confusion
  • Dizziness

Your loved one doesn’t have to have all of these symptoms. Even the presence of one or two should be a cause for concern.

There is no time to waste if you suspect that a loved one has overdosed or has alcohol poisoning. You should take the following steps:

  • Call 911 right away. Don’t wait.
  • Stay with them at all times.
  • Try to keep them awake, if you can.
  • Try to keep them comfortable.
  • Provide information to the paramedics when they arrive at the scene.

It’s normal to have doubts when you’re in this type of situation. You may worry that you’re overreacting. Please don’t be concerned about that. It’s better for you to act on the side of caution and get your loved one the help they need. It’s possible that you could even save their life.

Should You Consider Drug and Alcohol Rehab for Recovery?

We’ve provided you with a lot of helpful information about the different addiction resources in Edmonds. But there’s a chance that none of these are the right options for you. You may be someone who needs a professional approach to treatment through a drug or alcohol rehab. For so many people, this is their reality.

The fact is that most people can benefit from some form of professional treatment. In many cases, that means entering into an inpatient program for 28 days. If you’ve tried to quit using in the past, without success, this might be something for you to consider for your recovery.

The majority of addicts will require some time in drug or alcohol detox. It all depends on the type of substance you’re using. You may need to go through the detoxification process if you’re addicted to:

  • Alcohol
  • Illegal opioids (heroin, opium)
  • Legal opioid medications (Vicodin, Oxycodone)
  • Illegal stimulants (cocaine)
  • Legal stimulants (Adderall)

Detoxing will benefit you in several ways. It can prevent many of the complications that can accompany the recovery process. It can also treat your withdrawal symptoms so that they’re not as severe.

Detoxing won’t be the final step of your recovery. After you’ve detoxed, you will want to continue to a drug or alcohol rehab. Many programs offer both types of treatment in the same location, which is very convenient. This type of treatment will help you by addressing the reasons behind your addiction.

You may or may not know why you started using drugs or alcohol. Sometimes people begin using because they go through a difficult time, and substances help them cope. But there are other times when people suffer from co-occurring disorders, or mental illnesses and they use to self-medicate. Your therapist can help you learn why you became an addict and offer you the proper treatment for your recovery.

An addiction is such a complex condition, and experts believe that it’s actually a disease. Like other diseases, it makes sense to treat it using proven methods that have helped others. It’s definitely something you should consider.
