People who are battling addictions or mental health issues in Coeur d’Alene should consider professional treatment. Nevertheless, additional resources are available in the local area for people who need support. Some end up feeling stuck because they do not know where to turn to get the help they need. On this page, we’ve compiled a list of free and paid mental health resources in and around the city.

There are many organizations that offer programs that can help. For example, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are great choices. They have helped millions of people recover around the world. Also, families can get assistance through Al-Anon and Alateen too.

We want to make it clear that we are not affiliated with these programs. But we know that their methods can work, and have worked for many people. They are a necessary addition to this guide about drug and alcohol rehab and addiction recovery resources in the Coeur d’Alene area.

What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

Most people are pretty familiar with what Alcoholics Anonymous is. They have been around since the 1930s. Since the organization was founded, it has expanded tremendously. There are currently AA meetings being held all over the world.

Information on Alcoholics Anonymous

AA bases their teachings on the 12 Steps of recovery. People attend meetings on a weekly basis, and each one usually lasts about an hour. There are both large and small Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, and it is pretty easy to find several in most cities.

This type of support group is very beneficial for alcoholics. It allows them to meet and connect with others who are facing similar challenges. It will also give them the chance to lean on others who may be able to give them encouragement when recovery becomes difficult.

There are many different types of AA meetings, so it is not easy to give an explanation of what they are like. Some of them are very informal, involving a group of people who sit in a circle and talk. Others may be set up in an auditorium, and special speakers may give weekly presentations. There are meetings that go through Big Book Studies, and those that focus mostly on going through the 12 Steps.

With such a wide variety of meetings, it gives people a lot to choose from. AA recognizes that recovery is not a one-size-fits-all concept. Most people who go to meetings feel fortunate to have the chance to choose the one that will work best for them.

Sometimes people are nervous about their first AA meetings. They wonder if people will think they are odd or if they will be called on to talk before they are ready. There is no need to have these concerns. Everyone at the meeting will understand what you might be thinking. You will not be put on the spot at all.

Addiction and Mental Health Resources in Coeur d’Alene, ID

What is Narcotics Anonymous?

Narcotics Anonymous was founded as an answer for drug addicts looking for support during recovery. They were clearly not welcome to attend AA meetings, but they wanted something that was set up in a similar way. The result was NA.

Information on Narcotics Anonymous

One of the things that sets NA apart is the fact that anyone with any type of addiction can attend. This includes people who struggle with alcoholism. They want everyone to feel welcome at their meetings.

This is a non-profit organization, and the meetings are run by other drug addicts in recovery. They also adhere to the 12 Steps, but they are worded just a little differently. Many of the basic concepts are the same.

There is no charge to become a member of Narcotics Anonymous. Members are free to attend meetings, and they never have to pay any membership fees or dues. The meetings are usually held once a week; although some people may attend more than one.

Some people say that NA meetings are little more low-key than AA meetings. The environment seems to be more laid back and welcoming. Like AA, there are a variety of topics that might be covered during a meeting.

The other participants will be very welcoming toward you. A lot of them may introduce themselves because they do not want you to feel lonely. They may even ask for your phone number, or give you theirs.

There are several NA meetings in the Coeur d’Alene area. This is a complete list.

Information on Alateen

For young people, it is very helpful for them to know someone their own age understand what they are dealing with. They often do not feel as though they can be open and honest with older adults, so this gives them a welcome outlet.

Is Your Loved One at Risk for a Drug Overdose or Alcohol Poisoning?

Anyone who uses any type of substance is at risk for an overdose. But there are two specific times when someone might be more at risk than others.

Information on Overdose Signs

The first is when using a new drug for the first time. It is very easy to overdose on substances like heroin or cocaine because you are not sure how much you should use.

The second is when someone has tried to quit using and then has a relapse. The body’s tolerance level changes very quickly, but this is something that most people fail to recognize. Someone who was using heroin and then relapses will most likely return to using the same dosage. They do not realize that their body can no longer handle that amount. The result is an overdose.

Information on What to do for an Overdose

Perhaps you are concerned that someone you love could possibly overdose on drugs. But you are not completely sure about what types of signs you should be looking for. There are several obvious signs of a drug overdose, including:

  • An increase in pulse and breathing rates.
  • High blood pressure.
  • The absence of any vital signs.
  • Hot and dry or cool and sweaty skin.
  • Feeling very sleepy or confused.
  • Falling into a coma or becoming unresponsive.
  • Possible chest pain.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Vomiting blood
  • Blood in the stool.
  • Symptoms of diarrhea.

It can be difficult to identify when someone has overdosed on alcohol. Many times, the individual only appears to be drunk, when in fact, there is a much more serious problem.

The signs of alcohol poisoning include:

  • Excessive vomiting
  • Having seizures
  • Irregular breathing patterns
  • Hypothermia (low body temperature)
  • Becoming unconscious and unresponsive
  • Pale or blue-tinted skin
  • Slow breathing

A person does not have to have all of the above signs to have overdosed on alcohol. They may only have one or two.

Even the slightest suspicion of an overdose from either alcohol or drugs needs medical treatment. Sometimes people assume that drinking too much, or taking too many drugs is not really that big of a problem. Your loved one may not be able to sleep it off if they have overdosed. They need to be evaluated at the nearest emergency room right away.

It is best to call 911. You should not attempt to get them to the hospital on your own. The paramedics may be able to provide some treatment at the scene when they arrive. They may even save your friend or family member’s life.

When is the Right Time to Consider Professional Treatment for Addiction?

People often put off going to rehab for a number of reasons. They may want to try a less aggressive form of treatment first to see if it will work. It can be hard to know when it is the right time to seek professional care.

Some of the signs that you have an addiction that needs treatment include:

  • Being unable to quit on your own.
  • Realizing that you are forming a tolerance to drugs or alcohol.
  • Going through withdrawal when you stop using.
  • Being told by loved ones that you should consider going to rehab.
  • Feeling as though you cannot imagine your life without drugs or alcohol.

If you feel this way, you should consider getting professional help. Afterwards, you may be able to benefit from a less intensive form of care, such as AA or NA.

For many people, an inpatient rehab is the best option when they are new to recovery. This form of treatment offers many benefits, such as:

  • Being able to go away from home for a period of time to focus on recovering.
  • Having access to the best professionals and proven techniques for treating the addiction.
  • Being able to talk with other addicts and share experiences.
  • Leaving the stress of everyday life behind.
  • Being able to get treatment for any possible co-occurring disorders.

Inpatient treatment generally lasts for about 28 days; although there are some programs that may go longer. It truly is the best way to recover from an addiction.

You may need to receive drug or alcohol detox, depending on the type of drug you use. There are some substances that require it, such as:

  • Alcohol
  • Illegal stimulants
  • Prescription stimulant drugs
  • Illegal opiates
  • Prescription opioids

This form of treatment may seem like an extra step, but it really is not. Detoxing will help you manage your withdrawal symptoms and potentially avoid complications that can result.

About Alcohol and Drug Detox in Coeur d’Alene

As we mentioned earlier, some people will need to go through drug and alcohol detox prior to attending rehab. This is such an important step, and it is one that should not be skipped.

So many people do not realize that it can be dangerous to stop using drugs. That concept goes against everything they ever knew to be true. But the body gets used to what it is given, and when drugs or alcohol are stopped, it can be a shock.

Detoxing helps people to work through the withdrawal symptoms that are likely to occur when they stop using. It can also give them a much better chance of being successful with recovering long-term.

There are 10 different detoxification facilities within 50 miles of Coeur d’Alene. But not all of them are inpatient programs. About half of them offer inpatient treatment and detox services, according to the SAMHSA treatment locator.

It is critical to find a program that offers inpatient detoxification. There those who advertise rapid detox or even outpatient detox, but they should be avoided at all costs. No one should ever attempt to get off drugs or alcohol through an outpatient program. They can be dangerous, and it is better to be in a facility where the individual can be monitored for complications.

A hospital might seem to be the best place to go through detox, and it does have its advantages. Hospitals offer medically monitored programs, and they can provide medical detox services. But they are also sterile, and many of their patients do not have the opportunity to get peer support.

There are currently no hospitals that offer detox services within a 100-mile radius of Coeur d’Alene. People living in this area would be better off choosing a private inpatient program.

Drug Rehab in Coeur d’Alene

After detoxing, going to a quality drug rehab is also a vital part of the recovery process. Addressing the physical side of addiction is only a part of what needs to be done. During rehab, patients have the chance to learn why they became addicted to drugs. Once they know, that root cause can be addressed and treated appropriately.

How Many Drug Rehabilitation Facilities are in the City?

Alcohol rehab is very important for recovering alcoholics. It is not enough to get through withdrawal, and they need to determine what led to their addictions.

For many people, they started drinking as a way to self-medicate the symptoms of a co-occurring disorder. This term refers to mental health conditions that usually come before the alcoholism.

Going to alcohol rehab offers hope to people who thought they might be alcoholics for life. It can change everything for them and allow them to live happy, sober lives.
