Is Marijuana Really a Gateway Drug?

Marijuana earned the nickname gateway drug because people have a tendency to experiment with other drugs after using it. But there is a good reason why it has earned this moniker. Once a person starts using it, they find themselves chasing after the high it produces, but that can be hard to achieve. As a result, they often turn to other drugs to add to it.

This is the most commonly used and abused drug in the United States. It does have medicinal value, which is clear considering how many states have legalized it for medical purposes. It has shown to be very good at treating seizures and for pain associated with cancer. Even though these are appropriate uses, they do not make marijuana safe across the board.

Marijuana Withdrawal Effects: Are They Real?

Marijuana goes by a lot of different names, including: dope, grass, cannabis, weed, pot, and mary jane.

Regardless of what you may call it, if you want to quit taking it, then you want to know if you’re going to have to suffer through withdrawal symptoms. While there are no physical Marijuana withdrawal symptoms, that doesn’t mean that the psychological withdrawal symptoms of the drug aren’t troublesome. In fact, they’re often severe enough to cause users to go right back to the drug after they’ve quit.

Marijuana withdrawal symptoms can include:

  • An increase in irritability
  • An increase in anxiety or panic attacks
  • Problems with sleeping
  • Pain in your stomach
  • Sweats and chills
  • A chronic headache

Your Marijuana withdrawal symptoms are probably going to be different from someone else experiences if they stop using it, and there are a few good reasons for that. First of all, the severity of withdrawal tends to be related to how much and how long you’ve been using Marijuana. Secondly, it’s quite common for Marijuana to frequently be laced with other drugs, and when that occurs, you may also withdraw from those drugs as well.

It’s important to note that getting professional Marijuana addiction treatment can result in a reduction in the severity of these symptoms while also giving you the resolve you need to stay the course of abstinence.

The Short-Term Effects of Marijuana: Abuse and Addiction Symptoms

If you’ve been using Marijuana for a short period of time, you can still experience some of the more immediate results from it. Marijuana abuse is dangerous, and there are certain things you can look for to identify whether or not your abuse is moving toward Marijuana addiction. Symptoms include:

  • A sensation of being disoriented
  • Anxiety with or without panic attacks
  • An increase in your heart rate
  • Feeling drowsy
  • An increase in your appetite

These Marijuana addiction symptoms don’t always go away right after the high wears off. Because THC can stay in your system for weeks after your last use, so it stands to reason that these symptoms can resurface at any time.

Marijuana Addition Behaviors to Look For

When Marijuana is used for a longer period of time, it can have serious effects on your health. If you use it while you’re pregnant, it can cause brain damage in your child, and it can even lead to premature birth or low birth weight. Additional effects can include:

  • Sterility in men
  • Eventually diagnoses of cancer
  • An impaired immune system
  • A learning and memory impairment
  • Damage to the lungs

Another component of Marijuana addiction to remember is the fact that it’s really difficult to continue to experience the same type of high for a long period of time. You build up a tolerance to it fairly quickly, and that means you either need to use more of the drug to get high, or you move on to other Cannabinoids or additional drugs.

Will Idaho Become the Next State to Legalize Marijuana?

It is entirely possible that Idaho will be legalizing marijuana within the next year. On July 30, 2019, the Idaho Medical Marijuana Act was filed with the Secretary of State. This is a petition that requires 55,000 signatures by April 30, 2020. If enough signatures are obtained by that time, the issue will be presented to voters in November 2020.

The Act gives specific information about who would qualify to use medical marijuana if the law passes. It states that a person with a medical marijuana card would be able to have as much as four ounces of the drug on their person. Any person they deemed to be their caregiver would fall under the same protections. It also allows for the personal growth of up to six plants if getting to a dispensary is considered a hardship.

As more information about the Act becomes available, people in Idaho are wondering if recreational legalization would even be necessary. Under the new rules, almost any Idaho resident would qualify to use marijuana medicinally. Law enforcement officials would have a very difficult time prosecuting anyone for possession.

In a perfect world, legalizing medical marijuana would mean that the people of Idaho get the medicine they need. But in other states where the drug is legal for recreational purposes, the devastation is apparent. Many people have developed mental health disorders as a result, and the homeless populations in states like Washington and Colorado are climbing.

At the very least, more people are going to find themselves addicted and in need of rehab. But because they think of marijuana as being safe, the effects it has on their lives will come as quite a shock.

What to Expect During Marijuana Addiction Treatment

Most people who go to rehab for marijuana addiction will not need to go through the detox process. This is because the withdrawal symptoms that they experience are considered to be fairly mild. But of course, this is not true for everyone. There may be some people who will need to detox because they are also addicted to another drug. Others may have serious medical issues that would make withdrawal especially challenging.

Going to drug rehab is of utmost importance for anyone who is addicted to marijuana. These individuals that time in therapy so they can understand why they started using. During rehab, addicts spend time receiving many different types of therapy. They participate in group and family sessions and also have individual counseling with their therapist.
