Lisa Anibal, executive director of Northpoint Nebraska, recently spoke with KLIN News/Talk 1400 in Lincoln for a National Recovery Month story on breaking the stigma around addiction.
In the interview, Lisa encouraged Nebraskans to take a closer look at the resources available to them, starting with their own health insurance. Many people don’t realize that commercial insurance policies often cover substance use treatment the same way they cover other medical care. She recommended that anyone considering treatment for themselves or a family member check with their insurance provider, and noted that Northpoint helps families understand their benefits and find the right level of care.
Lisa also spoke about how stigma keeps people from reaching out. Many working adults worry about being judged, losing their jobs, or straining their relationships.
She reminded listeners that addiction can affect anyone: “We serve teachers, we serve police officers, we serve electricians, nurses, you know, everyone in between.”
She described common warning signs, including trouble at work or school, growing isolation or secrecy, and neglected responsibilities, and encouraged anyone who is worried about a loved one to start by talking with a physician or a treatment provider. She also emphasized that recovery doesn’t end when treatment does.
Northpoint’s alumni community holds activities during Recovery Month to help people stay connected and show that a full, active life in recovery is possible.
In Nebraska, Northpoint offers care from detox and residential treatment through outpatient services and peer support. Our programs include inpatient rehab in Omaha, outpatient treatment in Omaha, and outpatient programs in Lincoln, along with virtual outpatient care for Nebraska residents.
