When you’re struggling with an alcohol addiction, you feel as though you need help, but you’re concerned about what to expect. You may consider the possibility of getting one on one therapy for help with your alcohol addiction, or you could be thinking about group therapy. Perhaps the option you’ve heard the most about and that you’re seriously considering is Alcoholics Anonymous, but you haven’t been able to make up your mind about attending a meeting. You’re not even sure if AA is the right option for you.
Let’s talk a little bit about Alcoholics Anonymous so that you can get a better idea of what to expect if you do decide to start attending meetings. The more information you have, the easier it is for you to make an informed decision.
The Twelve Steps
You may have heard of the Twelve Steps program. If you have struggled with addiction in the past and received help for your addiction, you may have even participated in this type of recovery program. This is a program that takes you through recovering from alcohol or other addictive substances one step at a time. Over the course of the program you learn to rely on a Higher Power (regardless of whom you consider that Higher Power to be) in order maintain your sobriety. You also learn how to forgive yourself for the harm you’ve done to yourself as well as to other people, and you learn how to make amends for the pain you’ve caused others.
Many people have gone through the Twelve Step program and found it to be incredibly healing and freeing. They’ve learned to come to terms with their addictions and they’ve been able to experience what it’s like to break free from the struggle of addiction.
One of the best things about AA is that it relies on a group therapy approach. In that way it’s very different from sitting with a therapist one on one. At your first meeting, you might be surprised at the other people who are there. You might see your favorite waitress who brings you your cup off coffee every day at the local diner. You might see the police officer who offered your teenager a ride home on a rainy day. You might even see your former high school music teacher. Alcohol addiction does not play favorites, and many people attend AA meetings for the purpose of finding the healing and freedom they’re looking for. They come from all walks of life and they’re no different from you.
That is one of the things that makes group therapy so beneficial. When you spend time with people who are just like you, you get a sense of understanding from them. They’ve been where you are and they’re fighting the same battle you’re fighting. You’ll find that you become stronger when you no longer feel so alone. You’re in this together, you’ll hold each other accountable, and you’ll be there to support each other when you need it the most.
AA is Proven to Work
Millions of people have gone through AA programs since the time the program began. That’s because it’s been proven to work. People appreciate being able to talk about how they feel and the challenges they’re facing on a daily basis, and it’s easier when they’re in a setting with others who can relate to them. It’s also helpful to have people who can pick them up when they make mistakes and help them return to the right path. One of the things you’ll find is that you’ll be paired with someone who has been successful at AA, and in time, you’ll be able to help others too.
AA has been a reliable solution for many people who have been fighting an ongoing battle with alcohol addiction. If the thought of working through the Twelve Step program and the thought of sharing your experiences with others who are facing alcohol addiction sound appealing to you, then you are an excellent candidate for AA. However, even if you have some reservations, it doesn’t hurt to give it a chance. You might find that you surprise yourself with how much it helps you.
