Ben Affleck Opens Up About Going to Alcohol Rehab

Actor Ben Affleck Reports Finishing Another Round of Alcohol Rehab

Addicted celebrities are certainly not news, but when big-name actors like Ben Affleck report that they’ve just finished getting alcohol abuse disorder treatment, the media pays attention. Ben reports having relapsed back into alcohol addiction in recent months, and this is not his first stay at alcohol rehab. News sources report that he completed an alcohol rehab in 2001. This latest bout of treatment took place almost immediately after the Oscar Awards. The question is, what is it that leads actors like Ben toward addictions? Actually, there are a lot of reasons they look to substances, and because of the hectic lifestyles they lead, it’s understandable why they would feel as though alcohol and drugs are sometimes the only constants in their lives.

Ben Affleck’s Alcohol Addiction and the Possible Reasons Behind it

Over the last several years, Ben’s marriage to Jennifer Garner has been rocky at best, and she even filed for divorce. Although many media outlets are reporting that she may have called the divorce off, there are others who cite this as a false alarm. Relationship problems can wreak havoc in a person’s life, and this has undoubtedly been the case for Ben over the past few years. Fortunately, Jennifer has been taking care of their three children while he was going through his battles with alcoholism. There could be a number of additional reasons why Ben chose to start drinking again. It is reported that Ben may have been under a great deal of stress due to many harsh reviews that his latest movies have gotten from top critics. When you add these stressors on top of everything else he has to contend with day in and day out, it’s easy to see why he may have started to view alcohol as a way to relieve some of that stress. Even so, Ben has learned that alcohol is not the answer to his problems; or anyone else’s for that matter.

Encouragement for Alcoholics from Ben Affleck

Ben posted on Facebook recently, “I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I’ve dealt with in the past and will continue to confront. I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take first step…This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery.” It is so difficult to admit that you have a problem with addiction. Doing so means laying down your pride and being courageous enough to put yourself in a vulnerable position. This is something that is not very easy for actors to do, and so, Ben should be commended for his bravery and for his willingness to pursue sobriety in the public eye. If there is one thing that Ben has learned from his recent stay in alcohol rehab, it’s that alcohol is not the answer to his problems. This is a message he wants to portray to everyone who believes that alcohol is the only “friend” they have in the world. All too often, that is how people view addiction. They’re hopeless, and they’re looking for something that helps them to forget that. Choosing to go to alcohol rehab might be the hardest decision that an alcoholic ever makes, but it is one that will pay off in great ways – immediately and down the road.

What Should You Do if You Have an Alcohol Addiction?

If you are struggling with alcohol addiction, there is a lesson to be learned from Ben Affleck’s story. It would have been so much easier for him to continue on in his addiction, pretending as though everything was OK. It would have been simpler for him to stay home, to dwell in the misery of alcoholism, and to turn to alcohol as a source of comfort. It appears as though he began spending time with a private nurse in his home who offers medical detox care 24 hours a day, and sources say that this started taking place a few months ago. This was most likely Ben’s first step in getting sober, due to the fact that alcohol detox is so important for recovery. If you have an alcohol addiction, the most important thing you can do is to get the help you need. Although, hiring a private nurse might not be in your budget, alcohol detox services are available for you as a part of an alcohol treatment program. Once you have gone through alcohol detox, you’ll be prepared to take on the challenge of alcohol rehab, which will propel you through the remainder of your recovery.

The Importance of Staying in Alcohol Recovery

It’s possible that failing to stay in alcohol recovery is what led to Ben’s relapse, and this is the case for so many people who go to alcohol detox and alcohol rehab, only to relapse a few months or years later. It appears that he has seen the error of his ways, and according to his Facebook post, he has pledged to continue getting the treatment he needs for his alcoholism. He acknowledges that he will “continue to confront” his alcohol addiction, and this can only be accomplished by staying in treatment. For you, this could mean a few different things. It might mean:

  • Staying in an outpatient alcohol rehab program
  • Taking a step-down approach to alcohol treatment and attending an IOP treatment program
  • Meeting with an outpatient therapist regularly who specializes in addiction treatment
  • Taking part in a 12 Step group, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
  • Finding a sponsor to help you stay on the right track

Alcohol addiction doesn’t have to be a life sentence for you. Recovery can take place in your life as long as you take the proper steps to get help.
