Vancouver Washington Drug and Alcohol Addiction Resources

Vancouver, Washington sits on the banks of the powerful Columbia River, and is a family-friendly, beautiful city with views of Mount Hood, Mount Rainier and Mt. St. Helens. Just across the river from Portland, Oregon, this southern Washington city offers a plethora of recreational, business and educational opportunities and is home to both Washington State University and the renowned Washington School for the Deaf.

Like cities everywhere, Vancouver has its problems with alcohol and drug abuse. Heroin, meth, ecstasy and cocaine, as well as alcohol abuse pose a threat to public health and safety. Studies show that addiction rates are soaring in Vancouver, WA. Local law enforcement claim that meth is a huge issue. With that said, opioids and other drugs are also making a huge impact. Government programs are trying to raise awareness for addiction.

“Annually, about 394,000 residents aged 12 or older will use some type of illicit drug in the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro MSA. This represents 20.7% of the population, which is higher than the 14.7% average for the nation as a whole.”

Anyone can struggle with an addiction. This chronic disease does not discriminate. Worst yet, it can affect the loved ones of addicts as well. Family members and close friends often find themselves getting dragged into the issue. They’ll try to help the addict to no avail.

If your family is affected by drugs or alcohol, Northpoint Recovery can guide you to the local support you need. We can help you find out what treatment program will work best for your situation and provide you with recommendations on what to do next. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the different levels of care offered by rehab centers and the various support groups, like AA and NA meetings, that are available.

Recovery Meetings and Support Groups

Talk therapy is more important than you’d think when it comes to addiction recovery. Although it helps to talk to a therapist or a counselor, it’s even better to be able to discuss experiences and frustrations with someone who has been there and done that.

This is where support groups and recovery meetings can come in handy. These places offer recovering substance abusers the platform they need to confidently share their secrets. These meetings are a great place to vent, and a great place to work through your own inner turmoil.

Recovery Meetings and Support Groups

They’re so effective that some studies have found that those who attend recovery meetings, like a 12 step program, are three times more likely to abstain from alcohol or drug use and abuse.

There are quite a few different types of recovery meetings to choose from. The most popular and well-known 12 step programs include Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). These are faith-based meetings. Those looking for something different may want to check out Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) meetings. These meetings follow science-based principles.

Below, we’ll explore some of the support group options available in Vancouver, WA. Fortunately, there’s a lot to choose from.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is one of the most well-known 12 step programs. The first AA meeting was in 1935. Since then, AA has become a rather large non-profit organization that hosts meetings all over the world. It’s possible to find AA in almost every city in the world. These meetings only treat alcoholism, but they’ve helped millions of alcoholics get the guidance and support that they need.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

AA is best described as a fellowship of both men and women who are trying to help each other reach sobriety. These meetings follow twelve specific steps and principles. Each step teaches something different. Learning how to master each step can take some time. AA members can learn more about each step during step studies and book studies. Speaker discussions can often also offer some insight.

Many recovering alcoholics will want to start off going to an AA meeting. These meetings are free, and since there are so many AA meetings in Vancouver, it’s easy to find one that works for your schedule.

Check each meeting page to learn more about whether it’s an open meeting or a closed meeting. While anyone can go to an open meeting, only someone who is struggling with alcoholism can go to a closed meeting. Also, some meetings are handicap accessible, and others offer childcare services or other useful features.

It’s best to go to at least three meetings a week. This makes sure that the principles taught in the meetings remain fresh in the participants’ minds. They’re more likely to try the techniques and the strategies that are taught at the meetings.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

Since AA is only for recovering alcoholics, drug abusers looking to get clean and sober decided to come up with their own support group. In 1953, the first Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting was held. These meetings are incredibly similar to AA. They follow the same meeting structure and twelve steps.

Understanding the science behind NA can help many recovering drug abusers understand what the program is about. These meetings have helped millions of drug abusers get sober.

There are many NA meetings in Vancouver, WA, so finding one that works for you shouldn’t be too difficult. Once again, when choosing a meeting, make sure to determine whether it is an open meeting or a closed meeting. Once again, anyone can go to an open meeting. Closed meetings are private. Some may not be accepting new members.

Just like with AA, those who go to at least three meetings a week are more likely to abstain from drug use.

Al-Anon and Alateen Meetings

Family members and friends who know an addict will struggle just as much. Loved ones of addicts often waste a lot of their time and effort trying to help the substance abuser. More often than not, they’ll be disappointed by the addict’s actions. It’s vital for loved ones to learn where to draw their boundaries and how to react to the addiction.

Many addiction experts encourage loved ones to seek therapy or counseling for themselves. They should also consider joining a support group, like Al-Anon or Alateen. Al-Anon welcomes anyone whose life has been affected by a substance abuser. Alateen, on the other hand, is mostly reserved for teenagers who are dealing with an addicted parent, sibling or grandparent.

Al-Anon and Alateen Meetings

These meetings teach loved ones how to lead healthy and happy lives regardless of how the addict may act. They also teach loved ones more about addiction and how to handle various scenarios. These meetings mirror AA and NA. There are certain steps that members are asked to follow.

Members not only learn the steps at these meetings, but they also get an opportunity to share how they feel. Sometimes, it helps to just be able to let everything out instead of keeping it bottled in.

Anyone looking for Al-Anon meetings in Vancouver will find quite a few options to work with. Before going to a meeting, check to see whether it’s an open meeting or a closed meeting. Closed meetings are no longer accepting new members.

Some meetings also offer additional features. For example, they may be handicap accessible. If not, they may have childcare services available.

Once again, those who need more support should go to more Al-Anon meetings. These meetings can help them figure out what troubles them. It can also help them figure out what they should do next or what changes they should make in their lives.

There’s just one Vancouver Alateen meeting. There aren’t many options to choose from. Those who can’t make it to an Alateen meeting can always expand their search and look at options in nearby cities. There are also online alternatives available.

Another option is to join an Al-Anon meeting. Al-Anon meetings welcome teenagers, young children and young adults.

Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART)

Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) meetings are quite different from the 12 step program. These meetings follow a 4-point program. They teach members how to use various strategies and tools to cope with cravings and manage negative thoughts.

Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART)

For example, members can learn how to stop intrusive thoughts. They learn how to focus more of their attention and time on the positive areas of life. These meetings also teach members how to find a balance in life.

Unlike AA and NA, which focuses on treating specific addictions, SMART meetings help anyone who is struggling with addictive behaviors. This means that these programs are not only ideal for those struggling with a substance abuse problem, but they’re also a great option for those who may have an addiction to gambling or sex.

Although SMART meetings are fairly new, there are several SMART meetings held in Vancouver. Those who cannot make it to any of the following times can consider expanding their search. There are many more meetings in nearby cities, like Portland. There are also online meetings available.

Look for Professional Help

Although free addiction resources can definitely help, there’s nothing better and more effective than professional treatment from a rehab center. Addiction experts are well-versed on the latest research surrounding addiction. They know what type of medications, therapies or treatment modalities have the highest success rates.

When choosing a drug or alcohol rehab center, there are many factors to consider. For example, you should consider whether the rehab facility specializes in a specific program. Some centers may specialize in holistic treatment approaches, like yoga or Reiki. Surprisingly, these treatment modalities, especially yoga, can be very effective in treating addiction.

It’s also important to consider the level of care that you need. You can choose from two options: inpatient care or outpatient care. Both options can help you succeed in achieving lifelong sobriety.

Inpatient Treatment Programs

Inpatient treatment programs are also known as residential inpatient treatment programs. This type of program is perhaps the most popular and well-known type of treatment. It’s the type of treatment that most people think about. It’s the same type of treatment that we see on TV when celebrities go away to a treatment center to deal with their addictions.

Inpatient Treatment Programs

Inpatient programs usually take anywhere from 28 to 90 days to complete. In general, those who opt for longer treatment times that average or exceed 90 days will have an acute addiction. They usually have a harder time trying to get sober. If not, they’re at risk of struggling with dangerous withdrawal symptoms.

Anyone can opt for an inpatient programs. With that said, these programs are most ideal for addicts that fit one of the following criteria:

  • Have a hard time getting sober and may have even tried to quit previously, but failed
  • Are trying to get sober for the first time in their lives and will need extra support and attention
  • Have a high-risk of experiencing dangerous withdrawal symptoms
  • Are likely to relapse because of a difficult or stressful  home environment
  • Have abused substances for a long time or has built a strong tolerance

Although inpatient programs usually have a fairly high completion rate, this program may not be ideal for those who cannot take an extended leave of absence from work and school. This is because this program requires a lot of dedication and effort. There’s no time for anything else.

Outpatient Treatment programs

Outpatient programs are another alternative that many addicts can opt for. Unlike inpatient programs, recovering addicts do not necessarily have to move into the rehab facility. Instead, they’ll travel to the alcohol and drug treatment center whenever they need treatment. Since patients need to be able to travel to the treatment center, most patients will choose a center that’s close to their home or work if they’ll be seeking treatment on a regular basis.

Outpatient Treatment programs

Depending on the circumstances surrounding each patient, outpatient programs can last anywhere from several months to over a year. It all depends on each patient. Outpatient programs can cost up to $10,000 a month depending on the amount of treatment each patient receives, the level of care they need, the type of therapy they get, among other factors.

There are different types of outpatient programs. These programs can be separated into several levels of care. They include:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHPs). Get anywhere from 5 to 7 days of treatment with PHPs. Patients will spend anywhere from 4 to 8 hours at the rehab facility every time that they go in for treatment.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs). Receive at least 9 hours of therapy each week with IOPs. Patients usually opt for three hours of treatment, three times a week.
  • Standard outpatient programs. There are no obligations or commitments involved with this type of program. Patients can receive treatment as frequently or infrequently as they wish.

Outpatient programs are most ideal for those who have already completed an addiction treatment plan. They’re also a great option for those who have a lot of discipline or for those who already have a handle on how to manage and deal with their substance abuse problem.

Why You Should Choose an Inpatient Program

If you’re keen on getting professional addiction treatment, you’ll need to determine whether an inpatient or an outpatient program will be best for you. The truth is that inpatient programs are suitable for anyone struggling with an addiction. The intensity of this type of program will push for a higher success rate when it comes to sobriety.

Many addiction experts would recommend starting your road to recovery with our 28-day alcohol and drug detox and rehab program. This is because this program can offer many benefits over an outpatient alternative, like:

  • Around-the-clock care. Trying to beat an addiction can feel very scary. Due to fluctuating hormones and neurochemicals, you may feel alone or you may even feel sick. To make sure that you stay as comfortable as possible, inpatient treatment centers can offer 24/7 supervision and care.
  • A new environment. Many people don’t succeed when trying to recover from an addiction while still living at home. This is because they’re still surrounded by the same toxic people, triggers and stresses. An inpatient facility will offer you a comfortable place to focus on yourself. This way, nothing can interrupt or disrupt your recovery process.
  • Access to more treatment and modalities. Everyone needs something different when it comes to addiction treatment. At an inpatient facility, patients usually have access to more therapies, counseling services and more. They can also reach out to a doctor, to the nursing staff or to a therapist at all hours of the day. They won’t have to wait for the next available appointment.

If you’re sure you’re better off with an outpatient program, you can still consider contacting us. We can connect you with our sister outpatient treatment facility in Boise, ID. This facility offers the same type of evidence-based treatment modalities.
