Alcoholics Anonymous was the first 12-Step group of its kind, and it was founded in 1935. The two men who started it were both alcoholics themselves, and they felt a peer support model was needed to help people quit drinking. Millions of people have been helped all over the world because of attending AA meetings.

Alateen is a part of Al-Anon, but it is only for young people. Teenagers and young adults are welcome to attend, and some meetings are also appropriate for older children.
