Drug Rehab & Alcohol Addiction Resources in Newcastle, WA

Addiction Resources in Newcastle, WA

Drug overdose rates are at an all-time high in Washington’s King County. It’s time for addicts to get the support they so desperately need.

Newcastle, Washington lies in one of the most drug-riddled counties in the entire state. In 2017 alone, nearly 380 residents died of a drug overdose. The problem is only getting worse, too. 280 marks a 30-death increase from the previous year.

Most of these deaths are caused by opioids. However, crystal meth, cocaine, and alcohol are also part of the problem.

In order to bring an end to this epidemic, more addicts need to get help. By connecting addicts with the addiction resources they need, we may be able to save lives.

Detox Programs and Rehab Centers

There are several addiction treatment programs in or near Newcastle. These programs offer the help and support that addicts need to get clean.

Each program offers two primary services: detox and rehab. These two services are crucial for any addict who wants to get (and stay) sober.

Detox programs help addicts to go through withdrawals in a safe and comfortable environment. After all, this is notoriously the most painful step in addiction recovery.

When an addict attempts to stop using drugs, they typically experience withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms range from nausea and chills to profuse vomiting and tremors.

These symptoms make it very difficult for someone to detox on their own time at home. Too often, the people who try to quit cold turkey end up relapsing before they complete withdrawals.

Professional detox centers are staffed with medical doctors. These doctors help to ease the pain of withdrawal by developing a customized detox plan for each patient. Instead of forcing them to quit cold turkey, they help the patient through a tapering process called “medical detox”. This allows each person to withdraw slowly by using less and less each time.

Ultimately, it’s a far more effective form of treatment. It’s particularly useful for addicts who’ve been using for a long time.

There are currently around one dozen detox centers near Newcastle. Each of these programs has its own unique benefits and facilities.

Rehabilitation is the second big step in recovery. After a user detoxes, they need to acclimate to life as a sober person. This can be difficult. They must learn to cope with triggers and avoid the urge to relapse.

Rehab centers are the places where addicts learn how to live a sober life. In these programs, addicts spend intensive time with therapists and counselors. These professionals work to help them overcome their past traumas and move forward toward happier, healthier lives.

These drug treatment centers come in two primary forms: inpatient and outpatient. Inpatient programs are residential. Patients spend up to 28 days living on-site while they recover. Outpatient programs are non-residential. Patients report to the facility every day for treatment and return home at night.

There are a number of rehab centers in the Newcastle area. There are both inpatient and outpatient options. Each type of rehab works well for different people, so addicts should do their research before committing to a program.

Newcastle Resource Profile

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous, or AA, is a global support group for recovering alcohol addicts. This organization conducts free meetings in Newcastle and nearly every other city on Earth. These meetings are facilitated by recovering alcoholics who’ve benefited from the program themselves.

In these meetings, addicts from all different walks of life get together to talk. They discuss their own addictions. They listen to other people’s stories. They offer the support that addicts need while in recovery.

Each member works through the Twelve Steps. This is a program that helps addicts get sober in a systematic way. Throughout the Steps, addicts acknowledge the damage they’ve caused to themselves and others. Then, they work to repair that damage and live a better life.

There are no prerequisites for joining AA. All are welcome. No matter what someone has done in their life, the group welcomes them with open arms.

There is a vibrant AA community in the Newcastle area. Anyone struggling with alcoholism should do themselves a favor and check out a meeting.

Narcotics Anonymous

NA is very similar to AA. They are both free. They are both open to the public. And, they are both founded around the Twelve Steps. They also both hold meetings in nearly every city on Earth.

However, they are slightly different. Narcotics Anonymous, as the name suggests, caters to addicts who use drugs other than alcohol. There are NA members who are cocaine addicts. There are heroin addicted members. There are members who are addicted to crystal meth, Adderall, and Vicodin. There are even members who suffer from marijuana addiction.

As with AA, the group doesn’t judge. They don’t care what type of drugs a member has done. They don’t care what a member has done in the past. Their only concern is that each member works actively to get sober and stay that way.

Some NA members go to meetings for a few years until they’re completely sober. Other members attend meetings for the rest of their lives. The group is a compassionate and supportive environment. Many addicts find that it’s exactly the resource they need to stay clean.

SMART Recovery

AA and NA are valuable resources for addicts. But, they aren’t for everyone. Every addict needs to approach sobriety in a way that suits their personality.

Some addicts are turned off by the spiritual nature of Twelve Step programs. After all, the Second Step of AA and NA asks members to find their own “higher power”. While this doesn’t necessarily refer to God, many people believe that this gives the Twelve Steps a religious undertone.

SMART Recovery is a fantastic alternative to the Twelve Steps. This program takes a scientific approach to the recovery process. Instead of asking members to place their faith in a higher power, this program teaches addicts how to avoid negative behaviors. It also teaches people how to manage stress, deal with cravings, and move forward without relapsing.

Addicts need support and compassion. These things are crucial during the early stages of recovery. If an addict feels negative about AA or NA, they should give SMART Recovery a shot instead.

Al-Anon

Addiction is an all-encompassing disease. It affects every aspect of an addict’s life. Their physical health suffers. Their emotional health suffers. Their financial, professional, and personal life suffers, too.

Unfortunately, their condition often affects the people around them. Their family and friends are affected just as much as the addict themselves.

This is an overwhelming situation for family members. It’s easy to feel scared, guilty, angry, and depressed. Over time, these feelings can take a massive toll on someone’s well being.

This is why Al-Anon exists. This organization holds free support groups for the people who love an addict. It offers a safe space where people can go to find compassion.

In these meetings, members convene to discuss their pain and offer support. They give advice. They update each other on their situation. And, ultimately, they work toward coping with the complex feelings this situation generates.

Loving an addict isn’t easy. But, it should never ruin someone’s life. Like addicts, they also need someone to talk to. Anyone who is affected by the addiction of another person should do themselves a favor and attend one of these meetings.

Alateen

Alateen is a subgroup of Al-Anon. It’s designed specifically for young people. After all, addiction is a very complex topic. It can be difficult for children to understand. These meetings approach the subject in a child-friendly manner.

Some Alateen meetings are designed for kids under the age of 12. These meetings give children a place where they can start to open up about their feelings. The goal of these meetings is to help children understand that their parent or guardian’s addiction is not their fault.

Other meetings are made for young people ages 12-18. These sessions are a bit more educational. The facilitators of these meetings teach members why the brain becomes addicted. They talk about the behaviors that drive it and the effects. Most importantly, however, they reiterate that someone’s addiction is never the fault of their family members.
