Mount Vernon, WA Addiction Rehab and Recovery Options

Alcohol and Drug Rehab and Recovery Resource Guide for the Mount Vernon, WA Area

Going to a drug and alcohol rehab center to recover from an addiction is just one option available to those living in the Mount Vernon, WA area. Many people do not realize that there are additional ways for them to get help as well. Because of this, and because of their concerns about professional treatment, they often fail to get any type of assistance at all.

We want to change that by letting people know about all of the recovery options that are available to them. For instance, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are two organizations that offer free 12-Step support groups. So many people have benefited because of their programs.

Families also find that they struggle because of their addicted loved ones, and they often have a difficult time getting support. Al-Anon and Alateen has support groups that are scheduled weekly as a way to help families through this difficult time.

We are not affiliated with these organizations in any way, but they deserve a place in our guide to addiction recovery resources. For those who live in the Mount Vernon area, we want to send the message that there is hope, and help is available.

Mount Vernon Resource Profile

Free or Low-Cost Resources in Mount Vernon, Washington for Addiction Recovery

Addiction is costly, but so is the cost of rehab. Drug detox can cost an upwards of $500 a day, and outpatient treatment can cost over $10,000 a month.

The cost of rehab keeps many people from getting the professional help they need. Many people are under the misconception that they’ll need to pay for drug and alcohol addiction treatment themselves. Fortunately, this is usually not the case.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, health insurance companies are now required to offer addiction treatment coverage. Medicare and Medicaid will also cover a portion, if not all of the cost.

To top it all off, there are many federal and state-funded programs. Take advantage of these publicly funded programs to access free or low-cost addiction treatment and resources.

With addiction rates soaring, every county in the U.S. has been making an effort to stop addiction in its track. Skagit County is no different. There are many publicly funded addiction treatment and substance abuse resources here.

Some of these services include outpatient treatment, drug testing, crisis services, dual diagnosis treatment and more. Many treatment agencies collaborate with the county, and also accept Medicare or Medicaid. Some treatment centers will even offer a sliding scale fee based on income.

Skagit County also offers a Community Wellness Program (CWP). This program can provide short-term mental health counseling services to Mt. Vernon residents. To be eligible for CWP, residents must earn at or below 250% of the federal poverty limit guidelines. They must also have no access to health insurance. Medicare and Medicaid do not count.

Admission to all publicly funded treatment programs will be dependent on availability and eligibility. The requirements of eligibility may change at any time. Those who are interested in these programs will have to check back regularly for more information.

Detox Services in Mount Vernon, WA

Drug and alcohol detox should always be the first step for anyone who has an addiction. There are many reasons for this. The primary reason is that detox can help ease withdrawal symptoms. It may even help completely prevent some of them.

Most people relapse because of the withdrawal symptoms they experience. Withdrawals can become quite severe. They can increase in severity as time goes on. Without detox, some people may struggle with withdrawal symptoms for as long as several months.

Another reason for drug and alcohol detox is because of stopping the consumption of drugs or alcohol abruptly can lead to some serious complications. Many people experience heart attacks, strokes or seizures. Detox reduces these risks.

The SAMHSA treatment locator tool tells us that there is only one facility that offers detox services in this area. There are none in Mount Vernon, and the closest one is a little over three miles away. The next closest one is close to 25 miles away, which may not be convenient for everyone.

There are no hospitals in Mount Vernon that offer detox services. But there are some in the neighboring cities, including three of them within a 50-mile radius of the city.

A hospital is not always the best option for detoxing. Although they do offer medications to help with withdrawal, they are often void of any other type of care. Counseling may not be offered, and there are few opportunities available for group therapy or patient socialization. In addition, they are likely to send their patients to an in-house behavioral program rather than rehab.

When seeking detox services, you’ll be able to choose between two options: medical detox and holistic detox. These two services can help you wean off of any substance.

Medical detox is the most popular type of detox. It involves the use of medications to help normalize chemistry levels in the brain and body. Popular medications used include acamprosate for treating an addiction to alcohol, and Suboxone, buprenorphine or methadone for treating an addiction to opioids and opiates. Medical detox is not something that some patients can opt out of. Depending on the drugs that they’ve been abusing, medical detox may be critical to a successful and safe recovery.

Holistic detox involves using natural methods and approaches to help patients get sober. In general, this means making dietary changes to their life or exercising more often. Many substance abusers will incorporate holistic detox approaches to their detox plan for optimal efficacy.

Learn more about addiction and acquire the skills needed to achieve and maintain lifelong sobriety by getting help from a drug or alcohol rehab facility. When choosing a rehab program, you'll find that most treatment centers offer three different levels of care. They include:

  • Inpatient treatment programs. This is the highest level of care possible. Patients will move into the rehab facility. There, they'll enjoy detox services, behavioral therapy, and more. They'll learn how to live a healthier and sober life.
  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs). Instead of having to live at the treatment center, PHPs allow patients to travel to the facility every day for treatment. Patients will have to commit to about 8 hours of treatment every single day. They can get treated during the day or in the evening. This type of treatment is quite intensive, but still offers patients an opportunity to resume their current lifestyle.
  • Outpatient treatment programs. These programs are the most flexible. Patients can decide to get as much treatment as they need. Outpatient programs can be separated into standard programs or Intensive Outpatient Programs (PHPs). IOPs require a commitment of at least 9 hours of treatment each week.

Northpoint Recovery offers inpatient treatment. Inpatient care is most ideal for those with a severe addiction or for those who have difficulties getting sober. It offers benefits like around-the-clock care, a new environment that's free of negative influences, easy access to therapy and addiction services and more.

There are no drug or alcohol rehab centers in Mt. Vernon. Those who are interested in getting professional help will have to seek it from another city or another state. Northpoint Recovery is fairly close to Mount Vernon. We also offer a wide range of treatment options and programs to choose from.

People often fail to recognize the fact that all addictions usually stem from other issues that need addressing. Because of this, many facilities and clinics only treat the addiction. They never dive deeper into the reasons behind the addiction.

A comprehensive treatment plan will treat the psychological symptoms behind an addiction, as well as the physical signs of addiction. This means that patients should be offered counseling or should undergo some form of behavioral therapy.

Therapy will work wonders for someone who is dealing with a mild addiction or for someone who is seeking a detox-only plan. It’s also a good idea for recovering addicts to continue therapy even after completing an addiction treatment program. You’ll find many therapists and counselors in Mt. Vernon.

Therapists and clinicians will usually accept several different health insurance plans. However, if you do not have health insurance, many of them will work with you on a sliding scale fee according to your income.

Going to a Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center in Mount Vernon

Going to an alcohol or drug treatment center is such an important part of recovery. Once detox is finished, the individual is much more prepared to work on the psychological part of their addiction. That is the goal of rehab.

Many people enter into rehab with more than just substance abuse problems. More often than not, they also suffer from co-occurring disorders, which is what drove them to start using.

Co-occurring disorders are mental health issues that can and often do lead to addictions. There are many of them, including depression, anxiety and ADHD. People use drugs and alcohol as a way to combat their symptoms, and it does work for a short time. But eventually, they begin to notice that it stops.

Going to rehab offers hope for people who thought there was no way out of their substance abuse problems. They receive several different types of therapy, medication, and other therapeutic interventions that can help them remain in recovery long-term.

There are seven drug rehab centers located within five miles of Mount Vernon. These are a combination of inpatient and outpatient programs.

Everyone who is interested in recovering should talk with a professional about what level of care they need. Many rehabs offer free addiction assessments that allow them to provide these recommendations.

Likewise, there are also seven alcohol rehab facilities that are located in the Mount Vernon area. Three of them are found in the city itself. Additional options are available when expanding the search. This can be beneficial for those who prefer to travel away from home to go to rehab.

Support Groups and Recovery Meetings in Mount Vernon

A huge part of addiction is psychological. Even when the physical symptoms subside, many recovering substance abusers may start to miss the feeling of getting high. They may miss their worry-free life when on drugs or when drunk. Or, they may not know how to healthily handle their stresses in any other way.

This is where support groups and recovery meetings step in. Those who regularly go to these meetings are less likely to relapse. An emotional relapse happens when you start to get negative thoughts and feelings from not using any substances.

Support groups keep recovering addicts motivated. They encourage them to stick to their sobriety and remind them of the reasons why they wanted to get sober in the first place.

The most popular 12 step program in the world is Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). This program was first founded in 1935 in Ohio. Since then, it has spread across the world and has helped millions of alcoholics find their way back to sobriety.

AA meetings only treat alcoholism, but all substance abusers are welcome to join. Some recovering drug abusers find these meetings to be very helpful as well. These meetings are a great place for recovering alcoholics to vent and look for support.

The meetings are categorized as daily reflections, book studies, step studies and speaker discussions.

There is an abundance of AA meetings in Mt. Vernon. Check out each meeting to figure out whether it's an open meeting or a closed meeting. Anyone is welcome to join an open meeting.

Closed meetings are a bit different. They're reserved for recovering alcoholics. These meetings offer a more intimate space for sharing personal struggles and experiences.

Also, some meetings are gender-specific. Gender-specific meetings can touch on certain issues that affect one gender more than the other. For example, women are more likely to struggle with addiction after becoming victims of sexual trauma.

If none of these meetings work for you, consider joining an online meeting. AA is one of the most popular 12 step programs worldwide. You’ll find many more options if you’re willing to go to an AA meeting in a nearby city.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

Addicts struggling with a drug addiction will also benefit from joining a support group. It helps to be able to talk to other people about your struggles and experiences.

One of the most popular 12 step programs centered around drug addiction is Narcotics Anonymous (NA). This program is just like AA. The only difference is that members discuss drug-related topics. The program follows twelve specific steps and principles.

Members can be addicted to any type of drug. Some are addicted to prescription drugs, like Xanax and Valium, while others are addicted to illicit drugs, cocaine and heroin. Some members even abuse multiple substances on a regular basis. This is known as polydrug abuse, and is incredibly common. In fact, Anthony Bourdain struggled with polysubstance abuse

NA meetings include daily reflections, book studies, speaker discussion and step studies. Step studies will look at how each member can best practice each step of the program. Each step works in conjunction with the others to help better the addicts' lives.

There are a handful of NA meetings in Mt. Vernon. The meetings are held throughout this small city in the evenings. Finding one that fits your schedule shouldn’t be too difficult.

All of the NA meetings listed below are open meetings. Anyone is welcome to join.

If not one of the meetings above works for you, consider joining an online meeting. These meetings are extremely convenient. Anyone can join. All they need is an internet connection and an electronic device capable of connecting to the internet.

Those who are looking for a more intimate environment should consider joining drug-specific NA meetings. These meetings focus on one drug and one drug only. For example, Heroin Anonymous is specifically for those who are addicted to heroin.

Al-Anon

One of the most difficult things to do is to learn how to deal with a family member who is an addict. Many loved ones, like family and friends, will need to learn how to:

  • Identify signs of an addiction
  • Intervene in a respectful and effective manner
  • Encourage the addict to get help
  • Treat an overdose
  • Help the addict find the resources they need

Al-Anon meetings are able to help loved ones come to terms with the addiction. They also teach loved ones how to encourage the addict to get help.

These support groups are for anyone whose life has been affected by an addict. Members can be brothers, sisters, mothers, grandparents, friends and more.

There is no commitment involved with going to one of these meetings. Also, everything shared in these meetings will never leave the room. All information shared will be kept 100% confidential. Al-Anon meetings have similar structures and styles to AA or NA meetings.

All Al-Anon meetings in Mount Vernon are open meetings. This means that anyone can attend these meetings. Check out each meeting to determine which ones welcome beginners and which ones are wheelchair accessible.

There are a handful of Mount Vernon Al-Anon meetings. Those who can't make it to any of the meetings listed below should consider checking out online meetings. These support groups are just as effective.

If possible, try to go to at least one meeting a week. Just like AA and NA, constant practice of the principles preached in Al-Anon meetings in Mt. Vernon is crucial to one’s success. Those who are having a really difficult time should go to more than one meeting every week.

Alateen

Alateen meetings are incredibly similar to Al-Anon meetings. The only difference is that they are reserved for teenagers who have a parent who is addicted to drugs or alcohol. Some teenagers may be in a situation where both parents struggle with substance abuse.

These children may find that they have more responsibilities than other children they're own age. They may also find that they need to learn how to grow up quicker and how to resolve their inner conflicts with addiction.

Alateen meetings can help. They're designed for teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18. These meetings help teenagers come to terms with their situation. They teach them how to behave and how to resolve conflict within themselves. Members also learn how to healthily  share their frustrations.

Many of these meetings focus on the fact that the addict won't change. As a result, many members will become adult children of addicts. They teach members how to deal with future problems as well. For example, they teach members how to say 'no' if their parents ask to borrow money for their addiction.

It's often difficult to find Alateen meetings in many small cities. This is because there's not enough community engagement and participation. Fortunately, there is one Alateen meeting held in Mt. Vernon every week.

Those who can't make it to this meeting can consider going to an Al-Anon meeting. The meeting structure and style are both quite similar. There are also many online meetings and chat rooms available.

Alateen meetings are often hosted by teenagers only. With that said, some meetings are sponsored by Al-Anon members.

Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART)

Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) meetings are fairly new. These meetings follow a 4-point program and can help anyone who struggles with addictive behaviors.

SMART meetings teach skills that will help members cope with cravings and manage negative thoughts. They learn that they are not defined by their addiction and how they can regain control over their lives.

Some of the recovery tools explored in these meetings include:

  • The stages of change
  • Cost/benefit analysis
  • ABCs of REBT for emotional upsets
  • DISARM (Destructive Images and Self-talk Awareness and Refusal Method)
  • Hierarchy of values
  • USA (Unconditional Self-Acceptance)

These tools help members learn how to face various scenarios. They learn how to overcome their addiction and avoid future relapses.

As SMART meetings are still fairly new, it’s no surprise that there are no SMART meetings in Mount Vernon at the moment. The closest meetings are located in Burlington, which is about 15 miles away. It takes about 10 minutes by car to get from Mt. Vernon’s city center to Burlington’s city center.

Drug Overdose and Alcohol Poisoning

Every year, thousands of people overdose on drugs. In some cases, those overdoses are fatal, but even when they are not, they can leave lasting scars on a person’s life. Likewise, people who drink too much run the risk of alcohol poisoning. This can be fatal as well, and it is a condition that is often mistaken for drunkenness.

It is so important to understand the signs of both of these conditions. That is the only way that people will know to get immediate medical help for their loved ones.

A drug overdose is a medical emergency, and it is not something that should ever be treated at home. It is important to call 911 right away if an overdose is suspected.

The signs of a drug overdose include:

  • Abrupt changes in temperature.
  • An abnormally high or low blood pressure.
  • An abnormally high or low pulse.
  • Respiratory problems.
  • Feeling excessively sleepy.
  • Falling into a coma.
  • Feelings of confusion.
  • Cool/sweaty or hot/dry skin.
  • Chest pain.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Nausea and/or vomiting

Acting quickly may be the only way to save a person’s life if they have overdosed on drugs.

It is also important to know the signs of alcohol poisoning, which can mimic drunken behavior. They include:

  • Feeling confused.
  • Memory loss.
  • Stupor.
  • Falling into an alcoholic coma.
  • Excessive vomiting.
  • Breathing problems.
  • Seizures.
  • A bright, hot rash.
  • Chest pain.
  • A drop in body temperature.

Acting quickly may be the only way to save a person’s life if they have overdosed on drugs.
