AA, NA and Al-Anon Meetings that are in or around the Kent, WA area
Aside from Seattle, Kent has the highest overdose rate of any city in West King County. If you’re currently dealing with a drug addiction or alcohol abuse problem, it’s time to get help.
Drug addiction is a big problem in Kent, Washington. According to the King County Department of Public Health, the city has one of the largest overdose rates in the county.
Between 2016 and 2017, 20 out of every 100,000 citizens died of an overdose. Only Seattle saw more overdose deaths during those years.
In the 2017 Overdose Death Report, the Department reports that death rates are climbing. Heroin, prescription opioids, and meth have all increased in popularity over the past decade. Alcohol is a worsening problem, too. It’s clear, therefore, that there is a need for more addiction resources in the area.
If we can get addicts to attend AA or NA meetings in Kent or another nearby city, we could prevent the overdose rate from climbing. We’ve created this list of meetings in the area in hopes that it will save some lives.

Alcohol abuse is a serious problem in Western Washington. It may come as a surprise, but the state actually has some of the highest alcohol consumption rates in the country.
Here are a few stats about alcohol abuse in WA:
- In 2015, Washington had the 14th-highest drinking rate in the country. That year, residents were consuming roughly 57.26 drinks per month.
- Roughly 32% of high school students in the state admit to drinking on a regular basis. 25% of 12th-grade students admit to binge-drinking on a regular basis.
- Between 2009 and 2011, alcohol was involved in 50% of all fatal car crashes.
- During a 9-year period, nearly 2,000 residents were killed in an alcohol-related collision.
It’s fairly common to see stories of college students overdosing on alcohol. The state’s many colleges and universities are a hotbed of alcohol abuse.
So many young people experience alcohol poisoning in Kent and other Washington cities that the state has begun taking preventative measures. In 2013, the state passed a “good Samaritan” law. This law states that minors who call 911 to report alcohol poisoning will not be charged with possession.
The intention in passing this law is to cut down on alcohol overdoses. At the time of the law’s passing, roughly 2,000 kids were hospitalized for alcohol abuse each year.
Whether you’re a teenage alcoholic or a veteran drinker, AA can help you overcome your problem. You’re not alone. There are hundreds of thousands of Washington residents who are going through the same thing. Luckily, there are plenty of resources to help alcoholics get sober.

12-step meetings are one place that addicts go to get help. In these meetings, addicts get together to talk about their experiences. Meetings are held in a number of different locations. Some meetings are held in churches, for example, while others are conducted in community centers.
Whatever the location, the goal of each meeting is to foster recovery. Everyone is invited as long as they are committed to getting sober.

Many addicts are scared of going to their first meeting. They’re afraid of what happens in them. As Jean-Paul Bedard writes, “The prospect of spending countless hours in damp church basements and community centers…doesn’t do so much to warm the soul.”
But, many addicts are surprised by how welcoming the environment is. The members do truly want to help one another.
AA is founded around the idea of compassion. It’s founders believed that addicts could learn to get sober by having empathy for themselves and others. The environment of each meeting reflects that goal.

There are several different types of meetings. Most meetings are open discussion sessions. Addicts are invited to stand up and share their story with the group. They talk about their life, their addiction, and their recovery progress.
No matter the size of the group, the addict will be welcomed with open arms. The AA meetings in Kent, particularly, are warm environments where addicts can go for support.

NA: Battling Drug Addiction in Kent
While AA caters to alcoholics, NA is designed for drug addicts. Anyone who is or has been addicted to drugs is welcome to attend. Like Alcoholics Anonymous, the organization is focused around the 12 Steps.
Narcotics Anonymous welcomes people who are addicted to any drug. Whether your drug of choice is opiates, cocaine, meth, marijuana or something else, the door is always open. The meetings are very similar to AA meetings. Addicts share their stories and offer support to each other.

Narcotics (and AA) are both centered around the 12 Steps. But many first-timers are confused about that part. What are the “steps”? Why are they so important?
Well, these programs were designed as a system for getting sober. Their founders believed that all addict shared certain fundamental challenges. The steps were developed to help addicts overcome these challenges.
The steps are as follows:
- Admit to yourself that you’re powerless over drugs.
- Find a power greater than yourself.
- Give yourself over to that higher power. Let it help you to see the world more clearly.
- Take an intense inventory of your life, your beliefs, and your past choices.
- Take an inventory of everything you did wrong while addicted and admit that you did them.
- Declare that you want to be a better person. Declare that you’ll strive to be better in the future.
- Ask your higher power for help in becoming a better person.
- Take an inventory of everyone you’ve wronged while addicted. Become willing to make amends with those people.
- Make amends with all of the people on your list.
- Take a personal inventory regularly. Admit when you’re wrong.
- Pray to your higher power often.
- Embrace your life as a better person. Help other addicts in their battles with addiction.
These steps are shown to help narcotics addicts move past their addiction. By admitting their problem, taking responsibility and working to be a better person, addicts have an easier time getting sober (and staying that way).

Drug overdoses and alcohol poisoning need to be treated quickly. The reason why so many people die from overdosing is that they don’t get treatment fast enough. You can save yourself or another person by getting proper treatment in time.
If someone if becomes unconscious after using drugs, call 911 immediately.
If the person is awake, bring them to the ER. There are several hospitals near Kent that treat alcohol poisoning and drug overdoses.
Al-Anon in Kent: Supporting the Families of Addicts
The addict is not the only person affected by their addiction. The people around them usually suffer as well.
When a parent, child, spouse, sibling or friend is ruining their life with drugs, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. It’s easy to feel like their problem is our fault. When we want to change them, but can’t, we feel depressed and helpless.

The community around Al-Anon in Kent is made up of people who are related to addicts. These individuals meet regularly to discuss their lives and share advice.
