Overdose Help

While addiction clearly impacts nearly every aspect of an individual’s life, one of the most devastating consequences of substance abuse is an overdose.

The body can only handle so much of an addictive drug or alcohol. And when someone passes that threshold, the vital processes of the body begin to shut down. As a result, an overdose can lead to permanent problems like organ failure or brain damage.

Beyond that, they can also be incredibly life threatening. In just 2017, more than 70 thousand Americans lost their lives to a drug overdose.

On top of that, there are about 2200 alcohol poisoning deaths every single year.

In the end, overdoses have become so problematic that they are now the number one cause of accidental deaths among Americans under 50 years old.

It’s never been more important, then, to understand how to both recognize the signs of an overdose and know how to effectively treat it.

Not all overdoses will look the same. Individual body type, unique genes, other co-occurring disorders, and the quantity of the drug taken can all contribute to different symptoms.

On top of that, the different drug types also have different overdose signs as well.

To help you be able to identify the symptoms of an overdose more quickly, have a look at the list below for a better idea of what symptoms are associated with each different drug type overdose.

The most critical step in treating an overdose is contacting emergency services early on. As such, if you spot the signs of a drug overdose listed above, it’s critical to call 9-1-1 immediately.

It is also important to place the victim in what’s known as the “recovery position” if you have to leave their side (even for a minute). Doing so can help avoid life-threatening complications.

The experts on the other end of the line will not only dispatch an ambulance to your location, but they’ll also be able to instruct you on how to administer life-saving treatment. They may, for example, instruct you to begin performing CPR. Or they may tell you to induce vomiting in the victim.

No matter what the instructions are, though, it’s vital to follow their instructions exactly. Do not perform any care without their telling you to do so as that can cause unwanted problems.

On top of that, it’s important to be 100% honest about the situation. Operators are making crucial decisions based on the information you are telling them. And they’ll only be able to help if that information is true.

So while you may be hesitant to, say, confess to using illegal drugs, doing so will help them save the life of the victim.

Once the ambulance arrives, the emergency service providers will begin treating the victim as they transport them to the hospital. They may, for example, administer overdose-reversing medications like naloxone.

Covington Resource Profile

Support Groups

Overcoming addiction is no easy feat. A substance use disorder changes both the body and the mind on a fundamental level. And while a drug user may think they have enough willpower to quit on their own, the truth is that this is rarely ever possible.

Information on Covington Support Group Resources

That’s because an addict has become physically hardwired to perform drug-seeking behaviors. The body becomes unable to function normally without the substance, launching the user into a host of painful withdrawals if it’s been too long since last using. And the brain’s ability to feel pleasure, regulate behavior, and make sound judgments have all been infected by the pull to get high again.

In the end, quitting alone is tough, if not impossible. And that’s why it’s so important to find a support group during recovery.

Support groups connect recovering substance abusers with other people going through the same thing. These groups share personal experiences with drugs, success stories, and techniques and strategies for maintaining sobriety.

On top of that, they also provide emotional and motivational support for recovering addicts.

And that can make all the difference.

Luckily, there are plenty of local addiction support groups in Covington, Washington and the surrounding areas for residents to choose from. Below are some of the most popular options.

The original 12-step group, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has been helping problem drinkers forge a path to recovery for over 8 decades.

Information on Covington Alcoholics Anonymous Resources

The program soon became so popular that other offshoots dedicated to other addictions quickly began popping up around the country – and the world. That’s because when used alongside a professional treatment program, the 12-step method is scientifically proven to help foster sobriety.

On top of that, meetings are free to attend, widely available in Washington, and 100% anonymous.

One of the earliest 12-step groups to form after AA, Narcotics Anonymous or NA was founded in 1953. And since then, it’s grown to hold more than 67 thousand weekly meetings in 139 different countries.

Like AA, Narcotics Anonymous follows the 12-step approach to recovery and structures meetings in much the same way. Members share personal experiences, provide strategies and techniques for maintaining sobriety, and support other members in their journey towards recovery.

And also like AA, there are plenty of NA meetings taking place in and around Covington, WA. Have a look below for more information.

Alcoholics themselves aren’t the only ones who are hurt by substance abuse. In fact, addiction to alcohol can also hurt friends, family, loved ones, acquaintances, and even coworkers along the way.

Information on Covington Al-Anon Resources

Thankfully, there’s Al-Anon. This 12-step program is geared towards helping those who are hurt by another person’s alcoholism.

Like other 12-step groups, Al-Anon can be a vital source of support for people who are often overlooked during treatment. And for many, Al-Anon can literally be a lifesaver.

Young people are at an especially vulnerable time in their lives. They’re creating new relationships, dealing with overwhelming surges of hormones, and trying to decide who they want to be in their lives.

That’s why it’s so important that teens impacted by another’s alcoholism have their own place to go to get the support they need. That’s where Alateen comes in.

A subgroup of Al-Anon, Alateen is a 12-step support group specifically for young people. Here they can feel more comfortable sharing their experiences openly. And here they can also find out more about strategies they can use to stay safe and supported in their younger years.

Unfortunately, Alateen is not quite as widespread as other 12-step groups. But even so, Covington residents still have a number of different local Alateen groups to choose from.

Similar to Al-Anon, Nar-Anon is for friends and family members of addicts. Though this group is not specifically focused on the disease of alcoholism.

Rather, it makes no stipulations about what kinds of addictions are addressed. It could be addiction to heroin, cocaine, meth, marijuana, and – yes – even alcohol.

There aren’t nearly as many Nar-Anon meetings available though. In fact, there are only 2 in the Covington area.

Many people do not get the support they need when dealing with a family member’s alcoholism. And unfortunately, that can lead to a host of problems later on in life for these individuals.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) is aimed at helping these people in particular go on to live happy and healthy lives, despite their parent’s alcoholism in the past.

These meetings show members how to recover from the emotional trauma caused by their mother and/or father’s drinking. And they also show that recovery from this type of abuse is possible, with the right help.

Below are some of the closest ACoA meetings in the Covington area.

While 12-step groups are some of the best sources for addiction support, there are in fact alternatives. One of the most popular and most effective of these alternatives is SMART Recovery.

This group takes a decidedly non-spiritual approach to recovery. And like AA and NA, its format is typically group-talk oriented. However, meetings are led and directed by a certified instructor rather than group members themselves.

There are quite a few SMART Recovery meetings taking place in and around Covington. Have a look below for more info.

Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to attend the in-person meetings above. Some may not have the time or means to travel. And others simply may not want to interact with other people face-to-face.

Thanks to the internet, though, recovering addicts still have options available for getting the support they so desperately need.

The online support groups below give individuals the flexibility and the timely access they need to make recovery the priority it needs to be.

While overdose help and finding adequate support are both vital to a safe and successful recovery, they usually aren’t enough to ensure long-term sobriety. And in fact, the overwhelming majority of addicts will simply need professional treatment in order to kick their addiction for good.

Information on Covington Professional Rehab Resources

A professional program connects recovering addicts with expert knowledge and guidance that has been refined to promote the absolute best chances at recovery. They also have the medical knowledge and equipment needed to keep patients safe along the way.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any addiction treatment programs or sober living homes located within Covington itself. There are plenty of options in the surrounding areas though.

However, proximity isn’t always the only thing to consider when choosing an addiction facility.

And when you choose the right program for you specifically, it can make the world of difference.

Benefits of a Professional Program

A professional program has a number of benefits over trying to quit alone. These benefits include:

  • A higher rate of recovery
  • Connection to proven recovery plans, methods, and techniques
  • Access to powerful anti-addiction medications
  • Medical support during detox to make withdrawals shorter and less severe
  • Aftercare referral programs
  • 24/7 nursing support to make sure safety is a top priority
  • Dedicated emotional and motivational support

Types of Programs Available

Professional programs are typically broken down into two specialties: detoxification and rehabilitation.

The first phase of any proper recovery plan, detoxification is the process of helping the body get used to functioning without the help of the addictive substance.

Information on Covington Detox Resources

And while this is usually the shortest phase of recovery, it can end up being the most physically uncomfortable. Getting clean of a physical addiction can cause a slew of distressing withdrawal symptoms, including:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Muscle aches
  • Tremors
  • Insomnia

And on top of that, psychological withdrawals like anxiety, depression, irritability, and even mania are all quite common too.

A professional detoxification program provides patients with the support they need to push through these withdrawals. Treatments can be holistic in nature (nutrition-rich diet, exercise, meditation), medicated (Suboxone, methadone, naltrexone), or a combination of the two.

In the end, professional detox helps patients get through one of the hardest parts of recovery safely and effectively.

While detox tackles the physical side of addiction, rehabilitation is more focused on the mental side. Over time, the brain actually becomes re-wired to seek out getting high compulsively (without control). And in order to stay sober, patients either need to reverse those changes or find new ways of dealing with the impulses that they create.

For that, there’s one-on-one counseling, group talk therapy, and behavioral therapies like CBT.

There are also three different types of rehab programs.

InpatientThis type of rehab offers the highest level of care. Patients are required to eat, sleep, and receive treatment all on the campus grounds. This allows for a more controlled environment and a more focused approach to recovery. However, the tradeoffs here are higher costs, less freedom, and an inability to tend to some daily obligations (job, school, family).

These programs typically last around one month.

OutpatientAn outpatient program is much more flexible than inpatient. Recovering addicts in this program receive treatment during evening sessions rather than throughout the day. As a result, patients can still live out their daily lives like normal and can still fulfill many of their usual obligations. However, this can also contribute to a higher rate of relapse since patients are free to do as they wish throughout the day.

These programs are usually about 3 months long.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs)An IOP tries to balance the level of care and flexibility. Patients only attend treatment sessions in the evening (like outpatient). But these sessions usually last longer and occur more frequently throughout the week. It's a step up from outpatient but not quite as involved as an inpatient program.
