Auburn, Washington Drug and Alcohol Addiction Resources and Treatment Options

“The mentality and behavior of drug addicts and alcoholics is wholly irrational until you understand that they are completely powerless over their addiction and unless they have structured help, they have no hope.” – Russell Brand

Perhaps you’re facing an addiction or alcoholism, and you’re caught in a crossroads. You desperately want to quit using; you just don’t know how. If you live in Auburn Washington, there are a lot of addiction resources available to you.

Groups like Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous can both be very beneficial to you. You may also want to consider therapy or local clinics in your area for help. There are so many places you can turn, so there’s no need to feel like you’re on your own.

The fact is, no one expects you to recover from your addiction or alcoholism without help. You have a better chance of being successful when you have support; be it professional, online or peer support. Let’s take a few moments and talk about all the different options that are available to you.

Do You Have Questions About Addiction? Call Our Recovery Experts Now.

What is Narcotics Anonymous?

Narcotics Anonymous is an organization that has been around since 1953. It was founded by a man named Jimmy Kinnon. He had a vision of helping drug addicts overcome their addictions. NA describes their program as a nonprofit fellowship of men and women for whom drugs have become a major problem.

Because of the nature of their organization, there are no fees for you to join or participate. You’re welcome to come to weekly meetings and just listen, or tell others your story. The sizes of the groups vary, and you can try different ones until you find the right fit.

NA is all-inclusive for anyone who suffers with any type of addiction, including alcoholics. They want anyone to feel free to come. They follow the 12 Steps of Recovery, and millions of people have benefited from attending meetings over the years.

NA meetings tend to be very informal. If your group is small, you may sit in a circle so that everyone can see each other. You’ll probably be a little scared the first time you attend, and that’s OK. Remember, everyone there was once in your shoes. They know what it’s like to feel put on the spot, and they’ll make you feel comfortable.

Every meeting is different. During some of them, the participants are free to talk and share, one at a time. Others may have special speakers, or they may be studying the Steps. Afterwards, you’ll probably have some time to talk with the other members so you can get to know each other.

Once you choose an NA meeting, don’t worry if you don’t feel comfortable there. You may want to give it more time, or you may want to choose another one in Auburn. It’s completely up to you.

There are many NA meetings in Auburn, Washington. You’ll find them taking place every day of the week, which makes it easy to find one that’s convenient for you.

What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

Alcoholics Anonymous is a worldwide organization that began in 1935. It was started by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. At that time, they felt that there was something lacking for people who desired to recover from alcoholism. They believed that recovery would be easier for people if they had peer support on an outpatient basis.

Since that time, AA has grown into every country in the world. Millions of people have been helped because of it, and it continues to be an asset for many alcoholics.

In order to attend an AA meeting, you only have to have a desire to quit drinking. You’re not required to pay any membership fees or dues. The meetings are led by other recovering alcoholics, and they follow the 12 Steps of Recovery. The meetings are all very different, just like with NA. Some may have speakers, or they may be called Big Book Studies. The groups may be big or small.

Some people say that AA tends to be a bit more formal than NA. However, the people are all very friendly with each other, and they enjoy it when new people come. You don’t have to worry about feeling out of place, or like you don’t belong. The other members will make sure you feel welcome.

You also won’t need to say anything during your first meeting if you’re not ready. You’re welcome to sit and listen to the speaker, or to others as they tell their stories.

Al-Anon and Alateen for the Families of Addicts and Alcoholics

Al-Anon is an organization that was designed to provide support to the families of addicts and alcoholics. Sometimes we forget that the loved ones need help and encouragement too. This is why the work that they do is so important.

They also hold weekly meetings, and they’re located all over the country. Families can come and listen in or talk with the other participants if they feel comfortable. It feels good to have others listen and know that you’re being heard. It’s also comforting to know that you’re not the only one facing the challenge of having an addicted loved one.

Alateen is very similar to Al-Anon, but it’s specifically for teenagers and older children. They often feel more comfortable sharing with others their own ages about what they’re going through.

It’s easy to find Al-Anon meetings, that are in or around the Auburn area and there are several for you to choose from.

What to do if a Friend or Family Member Overdoses

It can be very scary when you realize that someone you love has overdosed on drugs or alcohol. It’s common for people to almost feel paralyzed because they just don’t know how to respond, or what to do.

If you find yourself in this situation, please don’t try to handle the situation yourself. Your family member or friend needs immediate medical attention. The best thing you can do is to call 911. Explain that you suspect an overdose. That way, emergency services will come right away.

Alcohol poisoning occurs when someone drinks too much in a short period of time. They will show signs of it that can often be mistaken for the symptoms of being drunk. It’s important to know the difference between the two.

When someone suffers from alcohol poisoning, they may:

  • Suffer from hypothermia
  • Begin having seizures
  • Be very confused
  • Have problems with their coordination
  • Have irregular breathing patterns
  • Be vomiting regularly
  • Lose consciousness

If you suspect alcohol poisoning, call 911 immediately. Whatever you do, please don’t think that you can treat this on your own. Their condition won’t improve if they drink a lot of water or sleep it off. They need medical attention as soon as possible.

Once your loved one gets to the hospital, the staff will assess their condition. They’ll check their blood alcohol level (BAC) to determine what to do next. If they’re having trouble breathing, they may have a tube inserted into their windpipe. This will help them with their breathing. They will also probably get an IV. This will keep them hydrated and keep their blood glucose and vitamin levels at stable levels.

If they are having a hard time controlling their bladder, they may have a catheter inserted. Sometimes it’s necessary to pump patients’ stomachs, but this will depend on their BAC level.

The hospital will most likely admit the patient for more treatment. Afterwards, they will probably talk to the individual about considering alcohol detox and rehab.

A cocaine overdose needs to be treated right away in an emergency room setting. The first goal will be to stabilize the person’s breathing. The staff will then assess their heart and determine if they need to intervene. They’ll receive an IV, and any other treatments that the staff feel are necessary.

Once the patient is stable, they’ll be approached about going to rehab to get help. This is very important because another cocaine overdose could possible be fatal.

If your family member overdoses on an opioid drug like heroin or painkillers, they need Naloxone as soon as possible. This is a medication that is approved to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses. The paramedics can give it at the scene, and they may receive many more doses as a part of their treatment plan.

Naloxone is a very powerful drug that works by attaching to the opioid receptors. It can quickly save someone’s life, but it will also cause immediate withdrawal. Treatments can be administered to help with those symptoms.

Should You Consider Drug and Alcohol Detox and Rehab?

Most experts agree that while other forms of support are good, there is no substitute for professional treatment. If you’re addicted to drugs or alcohol, you should consider going to detox and rehab to recover.

Addiction treatment will give you the best chance of a successful, long-term recovery. You’ll be able to work with professionals who know exactly how to treat your type of addiction. You’ll also get specialized care that is designed to meet your unique needs.

For many addicts, going to a drug and alcohol detox is their first step in recovery. This method of treatment addresses your physical addiction. It helps them get through the withdrawal period with less severe symptoms. It can also assist them with avoiding many of the complications that can come with withdrawing.

There are different forms of detox. You may take medications to help you with your symptoms. You may also receive holistic treatments as well. Your doctor will talk with you about the methods that are best for you.

Once you’ve detoxed, you’ll go through a drug or alcohol rehabilitation program. This will address the psychological part of your addiction. You’ll learn why you became addicted and receive treatment for any co-occurring disorders.

It’s important not to skip rehab after detox. Unless you work on the reasons for your substance abuse, your recovery is unlikely. The two really work together to give you the best chance of being successful long-term.
