Salt Lake City, Utah Drug and Alcohol Treatment Resources
“These feelings, no matter how painful, are part of living. Today we are alive – not anesthetized, not sedated, not passed out. Take control of your feeling and through action you can change. Today, as every other day of sober living, we have a choice.”
–      Ann D. Clark
Finding the right addiction resources in Salt Lake City can change the entire course of your life. If you’re like other addicts or alcoholics, you may be desperate for a way to recover. The problem is that you don’t know where to turn for help. This is a common issue, and it’s one that can keep you stuck in patterns of substance abuse for years.
We want you to know that you can make a change, and you don’t have to wait years to do it. You can start to take the steps to improve your life right now, and you don’t have to do it on your own.
There are so many support groups in Salt Lake City that can help you. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are two excellent examples. If you have a loved one who is an addict, there is help available for you as well. If you worry about a family member overdosing on drugs or alcohol, it’s important to know what to do.
Our goal is to provide you with the information you need to make the right decision for your sobriety. If you’re in need of professional alcohol and drug treatment, we want you to know where you can find it as well.

What is Narcotics Anonymous?
Narcotics Anonymous is an organization that has helped millions of people overcome drug addictions. It has been around since the 1950s, which means it came after Alcoholics Anonymous. The meetings are held on a weekly basis, and there are never any fees to join. The only requirement is that you have a desire to stop using drugs.
Many alcoholics enjoy going to NA meetings more than AA meetings. They still follow the 12 Steps, but there are a few changes in them. People who participate in NA enjoy being able to meet others who are facing the same battles.
There are several Salt Lake City NA meetings for you to choose from. Feel free to try more than one before you commit.

What is Alateen?
Alateen is very similar to Al-Anon. The only difference is that it’s for young people. Teens and older children are welcome to come and talk with others their own age. These groups provide an outlet for teenagers who need support and encouragement from others.
Alateens are always welcome to attend any Al-Anon meeting. You can find a few meetings specifically for teenagers and older children in the Salt Lake City area.

Should You be Concerned About a Drug or Alcohol Overdose?
When you’re a drug addict or an alcoholic, there is always a risk of suffering from an overdose. Sometimes people attempt to stop using drugs on their own, and then they relapse. Because of the way the body’s tolerance levels change so quickly, they are at risk of overdosing.
Alcoholics may inadvertently drink too much in one sitting as well. Both situations are dangerous, and require immediate medical intervention. It’s important to know how to recognize when someone has overdosed on either drugs or alcohol.
When a person has consumed too much alcohol at one time, they will usually display some signs of alcohol poisoning. These are often confused with the symptoms of being intoxicated, so it’s important to know the difference.
The signs of alcohol poisoning include:
- Being confused
- Having pale skin, possibly with a blue tint
- Passing out
- Abnormal breathing patterns
- A lower than normal body temperature
- Severe vomiting
Alcohol poisoning can put you at risk for a heart attack. You may become severely dehydrated, or your breathing may stop completely. If you fall asleep and you vomit, you could choke, which may result in death.
If you suspect that someone you love has alcohol poisoning, don’t hesitate to call 911 immediately. They need to get immediate medical help.
The symptoms of a drug overdose may vary, depending on what type of drug has been used. However, you may notice any of the following:
- A high or low body temperature
- Changes in breathing
- A high or low pulse rate
- Changes in blood pressure
- Sleepiness or even loss of consciousness
- Extreme confusion and delirium
- Coma
- Skin that is cool and sweaty or hot and dry
- Chest pains
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and/or vomiting
You shouldn’t attempt to treat a drug overdose at home. Call 911 right away and get an ambulance at the scene. The paramedics can perform some types of medical treatment there. They will take the person to the hospital as soon as possible.
Is Professional Addiction Treatment Right for You?
If you’re like many people, you may find that you need professional help to recover from addiction or alcoholism. While going to meetings can be helpful, this is often an approach that’s best saved for after you’ve gone to detox and rehab.
You may need drug or alcohol treatment if you:
- Have been using for several years.
- Have found that your substance abuse problem is impacting your quality of life.
- Have tried to quit several times in the past.
- Believe that you need to use in order to feel normal.
- Have tried attending support groups in the past, without success.
There’s no shame in going to detox and/or rehab to recover if you’re an addict. It’s best to take the steps to recover now before your addiction progresses even further.
Alcohol and drug detox may be the first type of treatment you experience. This will address the physical side of your addiction, which an important part of the healing process. For many, the fear of going through withdrawal keeps them from recovering. When you choose to detox from drugs or alcohol, it can reduce the severity of your symptoms.
Detoxing also offers additional benefits. If you are at risk for experiencing any dangerous withdrawal symptoms (such as seizures), the detoxification process may prevent them. It is the best way to prepare your body for recovery.
After you have detoxed, the next step is to go on to a drug and alcohol rehab. There, you’ll work on the psychological side of your addiction. You’ll participate with different types of therapy and learn a lot about yourself and your substance abuse problem.
Your therapist will determine if you have any co-occurring disorders, which can make it harder for you to recover. You’ll have group therapy and other forms of treatment as well.
Drug and alcohol treatment is so important for anyone with an addiction. It’s OK if you’re someone who needs this type of service. You shouldn’t feel as though you failed if attending AA or NA wasn’t enough for you. Many people need to start by attending a professional rehab program. If that’s the case for you, you’re certainly not alone.
Where to Turn if You Need a Substance Abuse Treatment Program
It’s not easy to recover from an addiction to drugs or alcohol. In fact, it may be one of the hardest challenges you’ll ever face. However, you’ll find that even though it’s difficult, it’s also incredibly rewarding.
At Northpoint Recovery, we specialize in helping people just like you. We work with individuals who have all kinds of addictions to give them hope. Right now, you may feel as though it’s impossible to recover, but we want you to know that you’re wrong.
With the right support, you can overcome alcoholism and drug addiction. Our team of professionals is waiting for you to make the next move and decide that you’re ready. Once you do, you’ll have a tremendous amount of help. It’s nearly impossible to recover on your own, and fortunately, you don’t have to try.
