You should know that sleep med withdrawal is not a short-term event. It’s not something you’ll experience in one night and then feel fine the next day. In many cases, it can last as long as two weeks. Some people even find that it lasts longer.

Typically, symptoms may start out being very mild. Over the next five days, they should increase in their intensity. You may get different symptoms than what you had at first. Most people find that they peak in severity around the third day.

At that point, they may start to improve, but they could get worse again at any time. Withdrawal is so hard to go through, which is one reason you shouldn’t attempt it on your own.

People typically overdose on prescribed sleep medicine because they assume it’s not dangerous. It was given to them by their doctor, so they figure it must be fairly safe for them to take. The body is so good at adapting, which is why tolerance levels can drop so quickly.
