Why Choose a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facility in Twin Falls?

There is no denying that AA and NA can be effective. They have worked for millions of people around the world for decades. But the reality is that they are no substitute for professional treatment. There are those who need a higher level of care if they want to be successful; at least in the beginning stages of recovery.

Opting for alcohol and drug treatment offers people so much support, which is often necessary. But many are not aware of what that entails and what they can expect.

Drug and Alcohol Detox

Going through drug and alcohol detox is often the very first step in the recovery process. This form of addiction treatment helps with withdrawal symptoms, which have been known to quickly derail a person’s quit. Even those who have the best of intentions may find that dealing with withdrawal is a challenge they cannot overcome on their own.

Detoxing can not only lessen the severity of withdrawal, but it can also help people avoid complications once they stop using. There are several drugs that require it before the addict can move on to rehab.

According to the SAMHSA treatment locator tool, there is only one detox center located near Twin Falls. It is close to 30 miles away. There are none located in the city itself.

But that should not deter people from seeking the help they need. Many actually prefer leaving home and traveling in order to get the help they need for their addictions. That is always an option to consider.

There are no major hospitals within a 100-mile radius of Twin Falls that offer detox services. But most people would rather not choose a hospital to get this form of treatment. Even though it can be effective, the sterile setting of a hospital can be uncomfortable, and many do not offer rehab services.

Drug Rehab in Twin Falls

Once people get through detox, their withdrawal symptoms are better managed, and many may have gone away completely. At that point, they are ready to move on to drug rehab

People can choose from many different types of drug rehabilitation programs. Both inpatient and outpatient are available, and there are even long-term rehabs for those who need them. But most do very well with a standard, 28-day program.

During rehab, patients can participate in various forms of treatment and counseling. They receive individual therapy and group therapy, and there are usually additional options on their treatment plans too. The goal of rehab is to understand exactly what it was that caused the addiction and then treat that cause. That allows the individual to have a much better chance of being successful long-term.

There are eight drug rehab programs that are located in the city of Twin Falls, and they are a mix of inpatient and outpatient facilities. But there are close to twenty rehabs located within a 100-mile radius of the city.

It is good that patients have plenty of options to choose from, but it is important to find the right program. People should be very careful to find one that is in-network with their insurance company. Also, opting for an inpatient center over outpatient care is usually best. That way, the person is sure to get the help they need.

Twin Falls Area Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs

Many alcoholics start drinking because they feel they need alcohol in order to get through the day. Some may be self-medicating due to a co-occurring disorder. Others may be trying to drink away stress due to the loss of a job, a marriage, or another personal issue. Regardless, alcohol rehab is absolutely necessary to help them work through the root cause.

Just like with drug rehab, alcohol rehabilitation programs involve various types of counseling and therapy. People learn how to live their lives without being dependent on drinking. They also learn what to do to avoid a relapse as they recover.

Those who have gone through alcohol rehab often credit it with being responsible for their sobriety. So many others can have the same testimony, but getting there means choosing professional treatment.

There are close to twenty recovery programs in and around Twin Falls that offer alcohol rehabilitation programs. But they are not all created equally. It is best to choose one that offers inpatient treatment and that has a lower patient population. That will give the patient more time to interact with staff.

The Facts

Illicit use of prescription drugs like Oxycontin and the abuse of illegal drugs such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamines, and marijuana rage across America among people of all backgrounds. Excessive use of beer, wine, vodka and other alcoholic beverages can spin out of control and devastate lives.

Even the “nicest” and most successful people can become addicted to drugs or alcohol. Most never dreamed that their use could result in an addiction that controls their life. In fact, the use of illicit and prescription drugs is so prevalent in the U.S. that in 2012, drug overdose caused more accidental deaths than motor vehicle accidents for people 25 to 64 years old. (Source: Centers for Disease Control).

And when it comes to drug-induced deaths, Idaho as a whole is seeing an unprecedented increase that’s only continuing to get worse. According to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, the rate of drug deaths among 25-34 year olds jumped by an astounding 52% from 2015 to 2016. For 55-64 year olds, drug deaths increased by 45% during the same period.

Obviously, Idaho has a serious problem with substance abuse today. And unless you know where to go to find help, abusing drugs can easily end up being deadly for you or someone you love too.

What Should You Do In Case Of An Overdose?

When it comes to addiction, overdosing is often the most physically destructive outcome. Not only can this drug toxicity cause permanent damage to vital organs like your lungs, heart, brain, and liver, but it can also end up claiming your life as well.

And given that drug overdoses are continually on the rise in the U.S. (especially when it comes to opioids) it's now more important than ever to know how to get life-saving help.

In fact, drug-induced overdoses are now the leading cause of death among Americans under the age of 50. In 2016 alone more than 63,000 U.S. citizens died from a drug overdose.

But what should you do in the case of an overdose? How can you spot the signs before it’s too late? And how do you know where you should turn for help?

The very first step in getting help for a drug overdose is, of course, first identifying the signs. Now, you may think that anyone can spot when someone’s had too much alcohol or too many drugs in a night.

But the truth is that so many people don’t get the life-saving treatment they need in time to help because the people around them didn’t know there was a problem in the first place. And when every second of a delay can mean a higher risk of permanent damage, it’s essential that you know how to spot the signs earlier rather than later.

So if you suspect that you or someone you know is going through an overdose, have a look at the symptoms below. And most importantly of all, get them the medical help they need as soon as you possibly can.

Alcohol – According to the Mayo Clinic, signs of alcohol poisoning include:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can’t be awakened

HeroinMedlinePlus’s symptoms of a heroin overdose include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse
  • SKIN
  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Amphetamines – According to MedlinePlus, symptoms of overdosing on this type of drug include:

  • Restlessness
  • Confusion
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Shaking of a part of the body
  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Depression
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Seizures
  • Coma (loss of consciousness for a period of time)

Cocaine – Signs of a cocaine overdose according to MedlinePlus include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Methamphetamine (Crystal Meth)MedlinePlus lists the symptoms of a meth overdose as:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

BenzodiazepinesMedlinePlus’s list of overdose symptoms for benzos like Valium include:

  • Bluish-colored lips and fingernails
  • Blurred vision, double vision
  • Breathing is slow, labored, or stopped
  • Confusion
  • Depression
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness, lack of alertness
  • Excitability
  • Hiccups
  • Rapid side-to-side movement of the eyes
  • Rash
  • Stomach upset
  • Tiredness
  • Tremor
  • Weakness, uncoordinated movement

Prescription Painkillers – According to SAMHSA, signs of a prescription opioid overdose include:

  • Their face is extremely pale and/or feels clammy to the touch
  • Their body goes limp
  • Their fingernails or lips have a purple or blue color
  • They start vomiting or making gurgling noises
  • They cannot be awakened or are unable to speak
  • Their breathing or heartbeat slows or stops

If you’ve identified that someone you’re with is going through an overdose, it’s absolutely critical that you call 9-1-1 immediately. Drug overdoses can be incredibly deadly. And every second that you delay contacting professional medical help means a higher risk of permanent damage or even death.

It’s also important once you contact emergency services that you follow each and every one of their instructions. They may tell you to start CPR, induce vomiting, or turn them on their side to reduce the risk of aspiration.

They'll likely also send an ambulance to your location too. Unless you are already on your way to the hospital, do not drive the victim to the hospital without first calling for help. Sometimes waiting for an ambulance can lead to a better outcome than if you drive them yourself.

Once an ambulance arrives, they’ll likely take the victim to the nearest hospital.

Support Groups For Addiction In Twin Falls

Despite the fact that many have tried, overcoming your addiction by yourself is often the least effective (and the most dangerous) method of getting clean. It can be much more uncomfortable than a professional treatment program and often leads to relapse later down the line.

But what happens after treatment? How can you get the support you need to maintain sobriety and stay clean for good?

For many, the answer comes in the form of addiction support groups. These programs typically offer a dedicated support network, effective strategies for staying sober, and are usually 100% free to join.

And best of all, these meetings are happening right in the Twin Falls area every day of the week. Below are three of the biggest and most well-known of these meetings: NA, AA, and SMART Recovery.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Meetings

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a well-known and highly respected program with groups across the country. NA welcomes those who are maintaining their sobriety after completing a rehabilitation program or may be where a new attendee first learns about rehab programs and what they offer. Attending NA meetings is free.

Narcotics Anonymous is what’s known as a 12-step program. These groups believe that the absolute best way of overcoming addiction and living a life of sobriety is by following the basic 12 principles of recovery as outlined by each of the steps.

They also tend to follow a group talk format where everyone is welcome to tell their story and learn from the experiences of other members of the group.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Meetings In or Near Twin Falls

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is perhaps the best-known support group in the world. A fellowship of men and women all helping each other through their journey to get and stay sober, AA has spawned many subgroups to offer guidance and encouragement to family members as well. The 12 Steps taught by AA help people regain control of their lives, and reach and maintain sobriety.

Unlike Narcotics Anonymous, AA is focused specifically on helping people who have fallen prey to an alcohol addiction as the name implies.

SMART Recovery

Not everyone will respond positively to the recovery methods and teachings of 12-step groups. In some cases, people may be turned off by the implicit religious component involved (e.g., “we came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity”).

And while many NA and AA members state that believing in God or some sort of religion is in no way required for these gatherings, still others may prefer to attend other addiction support groups instead.

One such group that many have found to be especially helpful is SMART Recovery. SMART Recovery groups use science-based strategies and tools to provide addicts with everything they need to fight off cravings without appealing to a higher power.

These meetings are also led by trained professionals rather than the members themselves, allowing for more structure and possibly a better chance at attaining sobriety.

Meetings for Family & Friends of Addicts

When someone is addicted to alcohol or a drug, they aren’t the only ones who are impacted. Partners, lovers, friends, and family are all also hurt by the deception, the destruction, and the chaos that often goes hand in hand with a serious substance use disorder.

And that’s why it’s so important to know where to find support and guidance that’s catered specifically to friends and family members of addicts. And luckily, there are plenty of options to choose from in the Twin Falls area.

Al-Anon and Alateen are there for family members, including children and teenagers, affected by a loved one's drinking. Like Al-Anon, Nar-Anon is specifically for family members of addicts. However, unlike Al-Anon, this group does not discriminate by the type of substance being abused. All addictions are treated equally here, similar to Narcotics Anonymous in general.

Unfortunately, Twin Falls and Idaho, in general, doesn't have many Nar-Anon meetings to choose from. In fact, the only one in the entire state takes place in Nampa. Here's some information to help you find it.

Nampa Nar-Anon
Saturdays, 10:00am
4170 East Amity
Nampa, ID 83687
Meeting contact info: Phone # - (800) 477-6291; Email – WSO@nar-anon.org

Similar to 12-step programs like NA and AA, SMART Recovery also has meetings that take place specifically to help friends and family members of addicts. Also like Nar-Anon and Al-Anon, though, these meetings are a little bit harder to come by too.

However, there are two meetings that regularly take place near the Twin Falls area. We’ve listed them below to make your search even easier.
