So many people suffer from substance abuse problems for years, and they think there is no way out. Perhaps you can relate to that, and you have felt imprisoned for a long time. We want you to know that there is hope.
Groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous can provide you with the structure and support you need to stop using. There are also additional resources to assist you. We would like to take some time and offer you the information you need to get started on the path toward recovery.

In 1935, two men decided to start an organization that would offer hope and support for alcoholics. There were only two participants for the first meeting, but Alcoholics Anonymous quickly grew to become much bigger. People all over the world have benefited from its strategies since that time.
AA meetings are held in most cities in the United States. They center their teachings on the 12 Step model of recovery. Participants are welcome to come and listen to others tell their stories until they are ready to share their own. Anyone is welcome to attend an open AA meeting.
Members do not have to pay anything for their memberships. There are no dues or fees to attend. All you have to do is have a desire to stop drinking.
Everyone is nervous the first time they attend an AA meeting. This is especially true when you are not used to a group therapy setting. But other participants will be quick to put you at ease. You may meet a lot of different people from all walks of life. In fact, it may surprise you to learn the types of people who struggle with alcoholism.
AA meetings vary, as far as the topics. Some will be structured to go over the 12 Steps in order. Others may feature special speakers or study other materials. There are many that are strictly for discussion.
You can also find meetings of different sizes. Some may be very large, whereas others may be small and intimate. The participants in these meetings often end up feeling much more like a family than members of a group.
No matter what type of group you feel drawn to, the AA experience is one that you will never forget. It will be very rewarding, and you will help others while getting the help you need for yourself.

What is Narcotics Anonymous?
Narcotics Anonymous was formed in the 1950s, about two decades after AA got its start. Its founders felt that there needed to be a similar option available for drug addicts. The group therapy component of recovery had proven to be effective, but only alcoholics were allowed to attend AA meetings. As a result, NA was implemented.
NA also focuses on the 12 Steps of Recovery; although there are a few changes in the wording of the steps themselves. People are not expected to pay any membership fees to attend. The groups are self-sustaining, and often kept going because of donations.
The meetings are held by other recovering drug addicts. These are individuals who have found the program to be helpful for them, and who have a track record in recovery.
People often say that they liked NA more than they liked AA. They claim that the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed and open. Anyone with any type of addiction is invited to come to NA meetings; even those who are alcoholics.
The first meeting you attend may be a bit intimidating. It can be hard to see yourself in a group of people sharing all of your innermost thoughts and secrets. There is no need for you to worry. You will not be put on the spot or asked to share anything until you feel comfortable doing so.
Like AA, NA will be a very rewarding experience for you. It helps to know that you are not alone in your struggles with drug addiction. You will probably find that others have similar stories and experiences. Together, you will lean on each other and find encouragement and support.

It can be easy to overlook some of the victims of addiction – the families. These are people who suffer untold amounts because of their loved ones’ desires to use. They often have to deal with legal issues, health problems and mental illnesses. To make matters worse, they usually do not know where to turn to get support.
Al-Anon is an excellent resource for the families of alcoholics or addicts. They offer a support group setting where people can feel free to share about their situations and experiences. The meetings are usually held once a week, and anyone is able to attend.
When you have an addicted family member, you may feel stuck, and like there is nothing you can do. Above all, you have to remember to take care of yourself. You need an outlet; a place you can go where people understand. Al-Anon provides that for you.
Al-Anon meetings are the best places to find the support you need. If you have a loved one who is addicted to drugs or alcohol, this will help you more than you know.

Teens Can Get Help and Support Through Alateen
Alateen is a part of Al-Anon, but with one main difference. It is primarily for teenagers, young adults, and sometimes, older children. The meetings operate just like Al-Anon meetings.
For teenagers with addicted loved ones, Alateen can be a source of hope for them. They may not have anyone at their school they can talk to about the challenges they face. Many of their friends might not understand what they are going through. This organization changes that, providing them with an outlet that they so desperately need.
Attending a Alateen meeting will provide teens and older children with so much support and encouragement. This is an excellent resource that is available to you. There is one meeting in the local area and it is:

It is possible that none of the above support group options are very appealing to you. Some people simply are not ready to think about sharing with a group of people they do not know. If that is how you feel, please know that it is OK. There are many other ways that you can get the help you need.
What to do if You Suspect a Loved One Has Suffered From a Drug Overdose
It can be so scary to know that someone you love is an addict. One of your biggest fears may be that they will overdose someday. If they do, you might worry that you will have no idea what to do.
If you think that a loved one has overdosed on a drug like heroin or prescription drugs, it is important to act quickly. Even if you have doubts, it is best to be cautious and get help to the scene right away.
You should call 911 immediately. Many overdoses can be reversed as long as medication and treatment is administered right away. The paramedics may be able to give the individual medication that can save their life.
The signs of a drug overdose can differ, depending on the type of drug that was consumed. But you should look for any unusual signs or behaviors. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, it is best to call 911.
Some of the signs of a drug overdose can include:
- Stomach pain
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Severe diarrhea
- Blood in vomit or bowel movements
- Shallow breathing, or any other breathing problems
- Chest pain
- Changes in skin temperature – cool and sweaty or hot and dry
- Unresponsiveness
- Severe confusion
- Sleepiness and fatigue
- Changes in pulse rate
- High or low temperature
Some people may begin having seizures, or even slip into a coma. Try to stay calm and get medical help to the scene as soon as you can.
What to do if You Think a Friend or Family Member Has Alcohol Poisoning
Alcohol poisoning can happen for a number of reasons. Sometimes people simply drink too much at one time. Other times, they may be using additional substances, but not realize that they have had too much to drink. In either case, this is an emergency situation.
If you believe someone you love may have alcohol poisoning, you need to act quickly. It can be difficult to tell if they are just drunk, or if they need medical attention. Again, this is a situation where it is best to be cautious and call 911. They may need to be seen by a doctor and receive treatment in a hospital setting.
People who are suffering from alcohol poisoning may demonstrate the following signs and symptoms:
- They may be confused.
- They may vomit excessively.
- They may start having seizures or convulsions.
- Their breathing may slow drastically.
- There may be some irregularity to their breathing patterns.
- Their skin may turn blue or become pale.
- They may experience a drop in body temperature (hypothermia).
- They may pass out and you may not be able to wake them up.
Is a Drug or Alcohol Treatment the Right Choice for You?
The reality is that it is not always enough for some people to work with a support group. For many individuals, it is not enough to go to an outpatient program like therapy or a clinic. Sometimes people need to go through an inpatient drug or alcohol rehab program. Perhaps that it is the case for you.
If it is, you will need to speak with a professional to determine what type of help you need. You may find that you need to begin by going through the detoxification process. This will allow toxins to be released from the body, and it will also help you manage your withdrawal symptoms. There are some types of substances that require detox before you can go on to more treatment.
Once you have detoxed, you will be ready for drug or alcohol rehab. Many facilities offer both types of treatment in the same location, which makes it very convenient for you.
During rehab, you will be able to receive many different types of therapy. This might mean working with a counselor in a closed setting. You may have group therapy, family therapy and other forms of treatment as well.
Your therapist will be working diligently to determine if you are suffering from a co-occurring disorder, which may have led to your addiction. If you are, you will need a specific type of treatment called dual diagnosis treatment. This will effectively treat both conditions at the same time. It gives you a much better chance of being successful long-term.
You may need to consider getting addiction treatment if you:
- Have tried multiple times to quit using and then failed.
- Are using a drug that would make it dangerous to quit using on your own.
- Have a desire to stop, but feel that you cannot.
- Are facing a mental health issue that makes it very difficult for you to stop using.
- Have a home life that encourages the use of drugs or alcohol.
Many people simply do not know how to cope with their lives without substances. They have come to rely on them in their everyday lives. For some, drug or alcohol treatment is a necessity, and there is no shame in that. In fact, it is the best way for you to recover because you will get the support you need, guaranteed.
