Drug and alcohol overdoses have become one of the top killers in America. It's become such a problem that there's now an International Overdose Day. The goal of this day is to raise awareness to the number of overdoses happening all over the world. It's clear that drug and alcohol-related death rates are steadily climbing everywhere. 

While it's possible to overdose on basically all drugs, opioid overdoses are one of the biggest killers. It's easy for opioid users to get addicted to prescription opioids and to turn to illicit ones once their prescription runs out. Only small doses of opioids are needed to kill. In fact, only several micrograms of fentanyl can result in a deadly overdose.

"In 2016, more than 40% of all opioid overdose deaths in America involved a prescription opioid. More than 46 people died every day from overdosing on prescription opioids. This doesn't even include the number of people who overdosed on illicit opioids, like heroin."

Regardless of whether you or someone you know abuses drugs, it's important to know what to do in the event of an overdose. After all, you must act quickly. The body is shutting down rapidly. If the overdose victim does not receive the help they need soon, they could die. 

The best course of action for each type of overdose will differ. For example, if someone is overdosing on cocaine, he or she may become aggravated and violent. You'll want to physically restrain him or her. On the other hand, if someone is overdosing on opioids, he or she will experience cardiac and respiratory arrest and failure. Make sure to perform CPR, like the video below, to keep the individual breathing. 

Although the actions you should take with each overdose will be a little bit different, one thing remains the same: CALL 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY. Let the emergency operator know immediately that you are with an overdose victim. Provide as much additional information as you can. 

While you wait for help to arrive, stay by the overdose victim's side. Put him or her in the recovery position if he or she loses consciousness. This will prevent the victim from choking on his or her vomit.
