There is a much better way, and recovering from an addiction is possible with the right support. Alcoholics Anonymous

For many alcoholics, attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings has changed their lives. AA is a place where members gather on a regular basis to talk with each other and get support. People come from all walks of life, and anyone with a drinking problem who has a desire to stop is welcome to attend.

Alcoholics Anonymous is one of the most popular free alcoholism rehabilitation programs. And it’s a great choice for anyone struggling with a mild addiction problem or who want to maintain their sobriety after leaving a professional program.

AA has been around for a very long time; since 1935. The two men who started the organization felt that peer support was a necessary component for alcoholics in recovery. It was a piece that had been missing from the healing process. Because of their contributions, millions of people all over the world have benefited from attending AA.

It is not difficult to find AA meetings in the Preston area. Some may require some driving, but it is important to find one that is a good fit. We have listed the meetings in this area below.

Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Help in Preston, ID

Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous is very similar to AA, but there are some differences. This is a addiction rehabilitation organization that is dedicated to helping anyone with any type of substance abuse problem. That includes alcoholics. They follow their own 12 Steps, which are slightly different from what people learn in AA.

NA started in 1955, and until that time, there really was no peer support available for people with drug addictions. They are a nonprofit organization, and both men and women attend meetings, which are held once a week.

And as with Alcoholics Anonymous, meetings are plentiful around Preston. Plus, they’re completely free and open to anyone struggling with a substance abuse problem.

Attending a Preston area NA meeting can provide recovering drug addicts with so much support. It is helpful to learn from a group of peers. There are several meetings to choose from.

Al-Anon

Al-Anon targets their services to helping the families of people with alcoholism and other types of addictions. They understand that these individuals’ needs are often overlooked. In fact, they are usually so focused on caring for their addicted loved ones that they neglect to take care of themselves adequately. Al-Anon gives them a way to do that.

Al-Anon can also be a vital source of healing to help mend relationships with addicts. The family is a massive support system and throughout the difficult process of recovery, it can make all the difference for staying clean.

Like other support groups, the meetings are usually held once a week. People who attend are invited to simply listen to others tell their stories until they feel ready to share with the group. They offer so much support to people who really need it.

There are several Al-Anon meetings in the Preston area. We have listed all of them below.

Alateen

For young people, it is often very difficult to cope when someone you love is battling an addiction. They can easily become isolated from their friends and other family members. Many end up dealing with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression, and some even end up using themselves. These are all reasons why Alateen is so vital.

This organization is a part of Al-Anon, but they are dedicated to helping young people. Teens, young adults and even older children are invited to attend Alateen meetings. They meet on a weekly basis, and they give the participants a chance to connect with others who are facing similar challenges in their own lives.

Specific age ranges vary from meeting to meeting. But most will accommodate any members from ages 10 to 20 years old.

There are also several Preston area Alateen meetings. The information for them is as follows:

Sometimes young people prefer to chat online rather than to meet in person. For that reason, Alateen offers regular chat meetings as well. Adults moderate them carefully, and they are an excellent resource for teens and young adults.

When is it Time to Consider an Inpatient Treatment Program?

It is normal to feel a bit nervous about going to an inpatient treatment center; especially if one has never done so in the past. The fear of the unknown often keeps them from getting the information they need to make the best decision for them.

The reality is that there comes a time when inpatient care is really the best option. Some of the signs that indicate someone might benefit from this form of treatment include:

  • Having failed at an outpatient treatment program in the past.
  • Having relapsed more than one time.
  • Having used drugs or alcohol for many years.
  • Using heavily on a daily basis.
  • Using more than one drug at a time, or combining a drug with alcohol.

Inpatient rehab can be such a rewarding experience. It allows people to completely focus on their recovery and take the time they need to heal from their addictions.

Drug and alcohol detox may be a required first step as you begin your recovery journey. It really depends on the type of drug(s) you have been using as well as how severe your addiction really is. For example, you may be required to go through the detoxification process if you have been using any of the following:

Stopping the use of any of these substances is likely to result in serious complications; especially if the quit is done cold turkey. Detox helps to lessen the severity of withdrawal symptoms and it can help to reduce the risk of dangerous complications.

On top of that, a detoxification program can make long-term recovery far more likely.

Part of the reason why is that detoxification can be incredibly difficult to get through. And in fact, many people attempting to do it on their own can become so distressed and uncomfortable throughout the process that they turn back to using simply to get relief from the symptoms of withdrawal.

These symptoms tend to vary between different drug types. But some of the most common symptoms of withdrawal include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Muscle aches
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Partnering with a professional detoxification program helps make these symptoms much more manageable. And that often translates into a higher rate of long-term sobriety.

After detoxing, the patient usually then moves on to drug and alcohol rehab. This is where they receive the necessary therapy to help them recover even more. This form of treatment is great at addressing the mental part of the addiction. Patients learn new coping skills, and the reasons for their dependence upon substances is discovered. This allows them to get the treatment they need for the root cause.

An inpatient rehabilitation program requires patients to actually stay in a treatment facility for the duration of the program. This allows for more supervision as well as a more controlled environment as the patient receives treatment.

A lot of people actually start using because they are trying to self-medicate the symptoms of a co-occurring disorder. It is important for that condition to be treated. Otherwise, their recovery is not likely to be long-term.

The Flexibility of Outpatient Rehabilitation

Another option for those suffering from an addiction is an outpatient rehabilitation program. While inpatient is without a doubt the highest level of care (and usually associated with the highest success rates too), outpatient offers quite a bit more flexibility.

In these programs, patients attend a number of treatment sessions per week that usually take place in the evenings or over the weekend. And when patients aren’t in treatment, they’re free to do as they please. So while inpatient requires patients to < em>stay in a facility throughout the program, outpatient lets patients attend work, school, and family obligations as they see fit.

This higher flexibility, though, does come with a cost. Practically no supervision and a less controlled environment means that relapse can be more likely to occur.

As a result, outpatient is only recommended for those suffering from an especially mild addiction or those who are transitioning back into normal life after an inpatient program.

Professional Rehabilitation Programs Near Preston, Idaho

Unfortunately, there aren’t many rehabilitation programs near Preston, Idaho.

There is one that’s a quick drive away. And it offers outpatient treatment but no inpatient care.

However, there are quite a few different options to choose from in the nearby Logan, UT. Most facilities here only offer outpatient care as well. Though there are several that offer intensive outpatient programs and partial hospitalization as well.

Even still, there aren’t any programs that offer inpatient care. And for Preston residents suffering from anything above an especially mild addiction, the best option is likely going to be travelling for inpatient rehabilitation.

What To Do During An Overdose

Overdoses in the Preston area (and all over the country in fact) have been on the rise since the early 2000s. This is due mostly to the constantly raging opioid epidemic. But other drugs are responsible too. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, overdose death rates have spiked in 2017 for the following drugs as well:

  • Cocaine (13,942)
  • Benzodiazepines (11,537)
  • Psychostimulants like Meth (10,333)
  • Antidepressants (5,269)

But the very first step to treating an overdose is first identifying the symptoms. This can be difficult since different drug types tend to have different symptoms. However, you can find the most likely overdose symptoms of some of the most commonly abused drugs below.

Some of the most noticeable signs of a heroin overdose include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

Some symptoms of cocaine intoxication and overdose to watch out for include:

  • Feeing high, excited, talking and rambling, sometimes about bad things happening
  • Anxiety, agitation, restlessness, confusion

Some of the most commonly abused prescription drugs are benzodiazepines, prescription opioids, and prescription stimulants.

Below are the signs of overdose for each.

BenzodiazepinesSome signs of overdosing on benzodiazepines like diazepam include:

  • Bluish-colored lips and fingernails
  • Blurred vision, double vision
  • Breathing is slow, labored, or stopped
  • Confusion
  • Depression

Prescription OpioidsAccording to the CDC, some signs of a prescription opioid overdose include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Prescription StimulantsNIDA’s signs of a prescription stimulant overdose to be aware of include:

  • Restlessness
  • Tremors
  • Overactive reflexes
  • Rapid breathing
  • Confusion
  • Aggression
  • Hallucinations
  • Panic states
  • Abnormally increased fever
  • Muscle pains
  • Weakness

Once you’ve identified an overdose, the next step is contacting emergency help by calling 9-1-1 or poison control at (800) 222-1222. While both will be able to help in an emergency, it’s best to call 9-1-1 if the victim is convulsing, is unable to breathe, or is unconscious.

Once the ambulance arrives, the EMTs may administer certain drugs to help slow the progression of the overdose or reverse it entirely before reaching the hospital. With an opioid overdose, for example, they may use Narcan, an easily used nasal spray that’s so effective it’s even referred to as an “overdose cure.”

After the victim is transferred to a hospital, they’ll receive more comprehensive care. Depending on the situation, that care might include:

  • Activated charcoal
  • Airway support, including oxygen, breathing tube through the mouth (intubation), and breathing machine (ventilator)
  • Blood and urine tests
  • Chest x-ray
  • CT (computed tomography, or advanced imaging) scan
  • EKG (electrocardiogram, or heart tracing)
  • Fluids through a vein (intravenous or IV)
  • Laxative
  • Medicines to treat symptoms, including antidotes (if one exists) to reverse the effects of the overdose

In the end though, the most important thing for you to do is to spot the symptoms of an overdose early on and contact emergency help as quickly as possible.
