What is Narcotics Anonymous?

Narcotics Anonymous is a nonprofit fellowship for both men and women who struggle with some type of drug addiction. Everyone at the meetings – even the leaders – is currently in recovery. They meet on a regular basis in an effort to help each other stay clean. In fact, the only requirement for membership is to have a desire to stop using.

What is Narcotics Anonymous?

At NA, they focus on a set of principles that serve to guide them through their everyday lives. Prior to becoming members, the participants realized that they could not continue to manage their daily lives with a drug addiction. They had a desire to change that, and for them, NA was the answer to their dilemmas.

NA has been around for a long time. It was founded in 1955. Since that time, the number of meetings all over the country has experienced incredible growth. They have helped millions of people turn away from lives that were wrought with destruction because of drug addictions.

There are two different types of NA meetings. They are either open or closed. An open meeting means that anyone can attend, even if they do not use. This is often desirable by someone who is nervous about going to a meeting by themselves. It helps to take a friend along who can keep them company and support them. Closed meetings are just the opposite – only people with addictions are allowed to attend.

During the meeting, participants enjoy sharing with others about the past week. They may talk about their triumphs, and some may even share some setbacks. Some meetings may feature special speakers, or they may involve potluck dinners or other events.

The goal is to get people talking with each other. Once they open up, they find that they are not alone in their struggles with addiction.

Going to an NA meeting in Nampa can be a life changing experience. It is so helpful to talk with other people who understand what it is like to be addicted. There are several meetings in the area to choose from.

Nampa Resource Profile

What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization that most people are quite familiar with. The problem is that many people with drinking problems believe that it will not be able to help them. AA is an international fellowship of both men and women with drinking issues. The meetings are led by other alcoholics who are in recovery.

What is Alcoholics Anonymous?

AA depends greatly on sponsorship. This occurs when someone who is further along in the program personally helps someone who is new. They take on a mentor role and guide them through the challenges of their life. Finding a sponsor can be so rewarding, and people often look forward to the day when they can be sponsors themselves.

AA was started in 1935 by two men who had a grand vision. They wanted to provide a way for alcoholics to recover with the help of their peers. Since that time, AA has grown, and there are now meetings found in many countries all over the world.

Like NA, AA meetings are very informal. People may sit in a circle as they talk and share if the group is small. If it is a large group, they may sit and listen to the speaker at the front of the room. They also have open and closed meetings, and frequently have special speakers come in to talk with the entire group.

The meetings are held once a week at various locations. Once people get used to the format, it is easy for them to make new friends. The people at AA meetings are always willing to help each other, and they really become more like a family.

When people attend AA meetings in Nampa, they are often surprised by how much support they get. Many have said that without AA, they would still be drinking. This is where to find meetings in the local community.

It can be hard for them to talk about their struggles with others who have never been in their shoes. Becoming a member of Al-Anon gives them the support they need.

How Can Teenagers Get Help Through Alateen?

While Al-Anon has helped a lot of families, young people often need additional support. For them, Alateen can help tremendously. It is a chance for them to meet other people their own age and talk about the challenges they face on a daily basis.

For so many teens, Alateen has been instrumental in their lives. It allows them to move from a life of feeling isolated to a life of feeling understood and appreciated.

There is one local Nampa Alateen meeting within this community. The information for the meeting is listed below:

Monday Night Alateen
Mondays at 8:00 pm
First Congregational Church
2201 Woodlawn Ave.
Boise, ID

There are many other ways that teens and young people can get the support they need through Alateen. They may want to try a chat group, and this organization holds several of them throughout the week.

Also, please keep in mind that anyone, regardless of age, is welcome to attend an Al-Anon meeting. Young people are likely to find others their own ages at these meetings who can support them.

Outpatient rehabs are also available for those who may need them. Attending this type of treatment gives people the support and flexibility they need. Many programs offer intensive outpatient treatment programs, which have been shown to be extremely effective. This is a solution that anyone may want to consider.

What is SMART Recovery?

SMART Recovery is a program that is based on abstinence, and they are not based on the 12 Steps at all. They are a non-profit organization that offers help to people who struggle with addictions.

All SMART Recovery meetings are free of charge to attend. Participants get the opportunity to meet others with the same or similar types of addictions. Together, they work to help each other through recovering.

Their focus is more on empowering people to change their lives for the better through scientific methods. The peer support model they offer helps to facilitate those changes, and participants can draw on each other to get help.

Alcohol and Drug Detox in Nampa – Know the Options

For some people, choosing to go to treatment is the best decision they could possibly make. Their first step may be to enter into a quality detox program. There are certain types of addictions – such as alcoholbenzodiazepinesopiates/opioids and stimulants) that require this form of treatment.

Detoxing is important because it addresses the withdrawal symptoms people experience when they stop using. Most people find that they feel better much faster when they have gone through detox. It can also help them avoid the potential complications that can sometimes accompany withdrawal.

The SAMHSA treatment locator indicates that there is only one facility in Nampa that offers detox services. There are four additional programs located within 15 miles of the city.

Please be advised that inpatient detox is always preferred over an outpatient program. In most cases, it is dangerous for people to go through detox on their own, at home. They need to be in a medical setting where immediate and emergency help is available in the event of complications.

There are currently no hospitals within 100 miles of Nampa that offer detox services. There are some in the surrounding cities, but most people would rather not receive this treatment in a hospital setting.

Hospitals that offer detox services usually isolate their patients while they go through withdrawal. They may offer medications to help with their symptoms, but it can be a very lonely experience. It is often preferred for people to choose a private detox program where more services are available.

Nampa Drug Rehab Facilities

After detoxing, going to drug rehab is a critical part of the recovery process. There are many different types of rehabilitation centers, because everyone has different needs when it comes to recovering. People can choose either inpatient or outpatient treatment.

Most people start using drugs as a way to self-medicate. They have stress, sadness or other symptoms, and using various substances helps them to feel better. Drug rehab is important because it can help to pinpoint the cause of a person’s addiction. Once the cause is known, they can get the help they need to treat it. That, in turn, gives them a better chance of avoiding a relapse later on.

There are a total of six drug rehab programs in the City of Nampa. Additionally, there are twelve more that are located within a 10-mile radius of the city.

Quality treatment programs are available in the local area to those who need them. They are a mix of inpatient and outpatient programs. Also, some may be run by the county or state, and others are private businesses.

Alcohol Rehab Programs in Nampa

Alcoholics who want to recover should definitely consider going to alcohol rehab. There, they will have the opportunity to talk with professionals about their addictive behaviors. They will be able to work one on one with a therapist who will help them understand the root cause of their addictions. Once the cause is known, the appropriate treatment can be recommended and implemented.

When a person struggles with a drinking problem, they often think the answer is simple – just stop drinking. But the reality is that quitting is only part of the solution. Every effort must be made to help them avoid relapsing, and this is covered during alcohol rehab.

People often do not realize that most addiction treatment programs also treat alcoholism as well. Alcohol rehabs are plentiful in the Nampa area. As we mentioned earlier, there are six of them located in the city, and a total of 18 within a 10-mile radius of the city.

Drug Overdose and Alcohol Poisoning: What are the Risks?

Whenever anyone is struggling with a drug or alcohol problem, there is always the risk of overdosing. This can happen under several different circumstances, such as:

Drug Overdose and Alcohol Poisoning: What are the Risks?
  • Using a new drug for the first time.
  • Taking too much of any drug or alcohol at one time.
  • Mixing drugs with each other or with alcohol.
  • Attempting to quit and then suffering from a relapse.

Many people overdose on drugs after attempting to quit using them and then returning to their prior dosage after their tolerance levels have dropped. Overdosing is scary, and it can be life threatening.

The symptoms of a drug overdose will vary, based on the type of drug that was consumed. But people tend to experience certain physical and psychological side effects, which can include:

Identifying Drug Overdose Symptoms
  • Shallow or staggered breathing
  • Gurgling or snoring sounds (indicating a blocked airway)
  • Arms and legs that become floppy
  • Bluish tinted lips or fingertips
  • Pale skin
  • Becoming unresponsive
  • Becoming disoriented
  • Becoming confused
  • Having severe headaches
  • Having seizures
  • Becoming agitated
  • Becoming paranoid
  • Having hallucinations
  • A high body temperature

Alcohol poisoning is also a medical emergency, but this condition can be hard to identify. It is important to know the signs, which include:

Identifying the Signs of Alcohol Poisoning
  • Excessive vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Irregular breathing patterns
  • Becoming very confused
  • Stupor
  • Falling into a coma
  • Becoming unresponsive
  • Low body temperature
  • Pale or blue skin

It can be very easy to misjudge the signs of a drug overdose or alcohol poisoning for just using too much. So many people make the mistake of thinking that people only need to “sleep it off.” The reality is that these situations should be considered medical emergencies. It is important to call 911 right away.

  • You do not have a good support system at home.
  • You need the opportunity to get away and focus solely on your recovery.

Drug and alcohol detox serves an important purpose. It helps people manage their withdrawal symptoms, and it can potentially help them to avoid complications.

There are many benefits to attending a drug and alcohol rehab after detox is over. It can help people understand and heal from the reasons behind their addictions. For many, they started using as a way to treat the symptoms of a co-occurring disorder.

It is important to not skip this part of the recovery process. Unless the root cause is determined and treated, the individual is likely to experience a relapse.
