Alcoholics Anonymous
Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization that has been around since 1935. It was started as a way to help people who wanted to stop drinking. They depend on a peer support system, and all of the meetings are led by other alcoholics who are in recovery.
The two men who started AA were both alcoholics themselves. They knew that if they had a way to get peer support, they would have a much better chance of being successful. Since its inception, Alcoholics Anonymous has grown to incredible levels. There is now at least one AA meeting located in almost every city in the U.S. The organization has even expanded into several other countries around the world.
People who go to AA usually find the meetings to be refreshing. It is nice to know that others face the same battles. Becoming a member is a way to connect with others and get the help that is so desperately needed.
AA meetings are usually held once a week. But there are some experts who say that for someone who is new to getting sober, it is best to attend a meeting a day for the first 90 days. This allows them to immerse themselves in the culture and get as much support as possible during the early stages of their quit.
There is no membership fee for joining AA. The groups are self-sustained, and people donate money to the cause. The only requirement for attending is for the individual to have a desire to stop drinking.

Narcotics Anonymous
Narcotics Anonymous was started in 1955. It got its beginnings because there was a need for drug addicts to get the same type of support that people received during AA meetings. Up until this point, nothing similar existed to help people with drug addictions. NA changed all of that, and it has continued to grow throughout the years.
The principles of NA are very similar to those of AA. Both groups follow the 12 Steps, although with NA, they are a little bit different. Like AA, people who attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings never have to worry about paying a membership fee. They only need to have a desire to stop using drugs.
What is interesting about NA is that anyone with any type of addiction can attend. This includes people who are battling alcoholism. They never turn anyone away and they strive to help everyone who needs it.
NA meetings are held on a weekly basis, and they usually last between one hour and an hour and a half. When attending one for the first time, the other members will be very excited to see a new person walk through the door. It is not uncommon for several of them to befriend someone who is new so that they do not feel alone.
NA is extremely supportive, and the people are always encouraging. They know exactly what someone who is new to recovery needs to hear.

What is Alateen?
Alateen is a part of Al-Anon, but it offers support to young people instead of to the entire family. The reality is that teenagers, young adults and even older children can easily feel isolated when a loved one has an addiction. They rarely want to turn to their friends to talk about their troubles, and they tend to keep everything bottled up inside. Alateen gives them a way to get those feelings out into the open so that they can be dealt with appropriately.
For young people, Alateen can be life changing. It shows them that they are not alone with the challenges they face and it serves to give them hope.

It is also possible to attend Alateen meetings online. They offer many Alateen chat sessions throughout the week directly on their website. These meetings are monitored by adults, so parents can be certain that their children are safe.

Help for the Families and Friends of Addicts: Should You Worry About an Overdose?
Unfortunately, it is very common for people with drug addictions or alcoholism to use too much of their drug of choice. When this occurs, it is either called an overdose or alcohol poisoning.
The friends and family members of addicts are right to be concerned about a potential overdose. While it is much more common among people who relapse, the fact is that if someone is using, it can happen to them.
It is important to know what the signs of alcohol poisoning are. Also, please note that this condition is frequently mistaken for being drunk. While there are some similarities, it is possible to die from alcohol poisoning.
The signs of this condition include:
- Having seizures
- Becoming very pale, or even turning blue
- A drop in body temperature
- Passing out and becoming unresponsive
- Serious breathing issues
- Bouts of confusion
- Vomiting
A drug overdose is also a medical emergency. For those who are unfamiliar with the signs, it can be easy to miss them.
The signs of a drug overdose include:
- Severe breathing difficulties, or no breathing at all
- Snoring sounds, which could indicate a blocked airway
- Bluish fingertips or lips
- Arms and legs that become floppy
- No response to stimulus
- Falling unconscious and unresponsive
- Becoming disoriented
- Chest pain
- Hallucinations
- Agitation
- Paranoia
- Headaches
- Seizures
These signs can change depending on the type of drug the person has taken.
If you suspect that someone you love has overdosed on drugs or has alcohol poisoning, it is important to act quickly. You should not attempt to take them to the emergency room yourself. Instead, stay with them and call 911 right away. The paramedics need to get there as soon as possible.
When they arrive at the scene, tell them everything you know. Let them know which substances you believe the person has been using. That will allow them to administer the appropriate type of treatment, if needed.
