Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization that started out very small in Ohio. It was founded by two men who were both alcoholics. These men saw a need for a support group for people who wanted to recover. Once that idea was brought to fruition, the organization just took off.

AA bases their teachings on the 12 Steps of Recovery. They believe that people need each other in order to stop drinking successfully. Generally, each group meets once per week, and anyone can attend an open meeting. Closed meetings are only for those who are alcoholics.

This support group has meant so much to so may people. There are millions all around the world who have been in need of their services, and benefited from them.

There are several Meridian AA meetings, and they are taking place every day of the week. You can find them at the following locations and times.

Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous is an organization that was founded in 1953; almost twenty years after AA got its start. Jimmy Kinnon was the founder, and their headquarters is in California.

NA is built upon the same premises as AA, but it was started because people with drug addictions needed something similar to Alcoholics Anonymous. They wanted a support group for people with other types of substance abuse. The result has been an amazing journey of helping people heal.

Just like AA, there are no fees required for participation. NA focuses on the 12 Steps of recovery as well, but with a few adjustments. They also allow anyone who is an alcoholic to join in on their meetings. This is a wonderful benefit for those who do not like AA meetings.

You can find many Meridian NA meetings. They are located all throughout the city and in the surrounding areas.

What is Al-Anon?

Al-Anon is an organization that was designed to meet the needs of the family members of addicts. They work with people all over the country, and they hold meetings in many cities across the U.S.

When someone has an addiction, people often do not stop to think about the suffering the family may be going through. It is often left to them to pick up the pieces when a loved one is an alcoholic or addict. It can be hard to cope in that situation.

Al-Anon gives families a place to talk about their struggles. It is such an important group of people and they have helped so many individuals and families heal.

There are several Al-Anon meetings in Meridian as well as in the surrounding cities. You can find them by checking the following list.

What is Alateen?

Alateen meetings are ways for young people to come together and talk about the struggles they are facing. These meetings are strictly for teenagers, young adults and sometimes young children.

There are many Alateen meetings that can be found online. Chat meetings are a great way for young people to talk with each other and share their experiences. They can find support and encouragement through Alateen online.

Also, please keep in mind that anyone of any age can attend an Al-Anon meeting, unless otherwise specified. Your teenagers can still get support and help through in-person meetings.

What if You are Not Ready to Attend a Support Group?

Not everyone is ready to jump right into a support group when they want to quit using. In fact, for some people, even the thought of sharing their problems with strangers makes them nervous.

If that is how you feel, please know that there is nothing wrong with that. There are other options available to you as well.

Are You Addicted? Take a Quiz

Take one of our addiction quizzes to find out if you or someone you care about needs help today.

Should Loved Ones be Concerned that a Drug Addict or Alcoholic Might Overdose?

If you have a family member or friend who is using drugs or abusing alcohol, you have every right to be concerned. It is possible that they could suffer from either an overdose, or alcohol poisoning.

Typically, overdoses most often happen when someone is using for the first time and they use too much, or when they have relapsed. Either situation should be considered an emergency. It is important to know how to recognize the signs of both alcohol poisoning and overdose.

People who have drank too much tend to display the following signs of alcohol poisoning:

  • They appear very confused.
  • They have excessive vomiting.
  • They begin having seizures.
  • The have slower breathing patterns
  • They have irregular breathing.
  • Their skin turns blue or pale.
  • They have a lower body temperature than normal.
  • They pass out and it is impossible to wake them up.

Someone who has overdosed on drugs may display varying symptoms, depending on the drug they were using. Typically, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • They have high blood pressure.
  • Their pulse rate is extremely high.
  • They either breathe too fast or to slow.
  • They have either a high or low body temperature.
  • They feel very sleepy.
  • They feel confused.
  • They may fall into a coma.
  • Their skin is cool and sweaty or hot and dry.
  • They complain of chest pain.
  • They complain of an upset stomach or stomach pain.
  • They have nausea and vomiting.

If you believe that a loved one has overdosed on drugs, or has alcohol poisoning, you must act quickly. Do not attempt to take them to the hospital yourself. Call 911 immediately and explain your concerns. If you can, tell the person on the phone the type of drug you believe the person overdosed on.

After you call 911, stay by their side at all times. Try to talk with them and keep them from passing out. Remain at the scene until emergency help arrives in case you need to answer any questions.

How Can Drug or Alcohol Treatment Help You Recover?

It is possible that you might need more intensive treatment for your addiction. If that is the case, you would benefit from going to a drug or alcohol rehab.

Not everyone can recover through outpatient treatment and support groups alone. While these forms of care are good, when you are trying to quit using, they are usually not enough. You will get a lot of help when you choose to go to an inpatient program.

Drug and Alcohol Detox Information

Depending on the type of drug you’re using, you may need to go through the detoxification process first. This is done solely to keep you safe, and to help you avoid some of the complications that can go along with withdrawal.

drug and alcohol detox will help you by addressing your withdrawal symptoms. You may take medication in combination with holistic treatments as toxins are flushed from your body. This is an essential step for most people.

Alcohol and Drug Rehab Information

Once you have detoxed, you should continue on to a drug and alcohol rehab. There, you will receive many different types of therapy to help you with your recovery. You will also work with a therapist who will determine if you suffer from any co-occurring disorders. If you do, those will be treated as well.
