Gooding Overdose, Support, & Treatment Addiction Resources

Overdose Help, Support Groups, Treatment Center & Other Addiction Resources in Gooding, ID

A community known for cattle and sheep ranching as well as both dry and irrigated farming, Gooding is a small Idaho community that over 3,500 residents call home.

Gooding’s original name was Toponis, but it was renamed after a sheep rancher who was a political figure in the area during the beginning of the 20th Century.

And while Gooding’s size is far different than a big city’s, it has suffered from the same problems with addiction as larger urban sectors – just like so many other rural towns in the United States.

One of the main culprits is, of course, the opioid epidemic which continues to spread like wildfire. However, other drugs like cocaine, prescription pills, and of course alcohol are also trapping Gooding residents into a life of addiction.

Luckily, though, there are plenty of local resources available to help keep people safe during an overdose, lend community support through groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and to point residents to much-needed treatment options.

This guide takes a look at these resources and shows that even though addiction can feel incredibly isolating, it doesn’t mean you have to suffer alone.

Recognizing The Signs of an Overdose

Addiction and substance abuse can be devastating. Not only can they seriously jeopardize social relationships, legal records, and career opportunities, but they can also wreak havoc on physical and mental health.

One of the most dangerous outcomes of using drugs is an overdose. This results from taking in more of a toxic substance than your body can handle. And it can cause permanent brain and organ damage, coma, seizures, and even death.

Added to that, drug overdoses have become incredibly common in the United States today. In fact, overdosing is now the leading cause of death among Americans under the age of 50. And it isn’t just opioids either. Cocaine, benzodiazepines, meth, and even alcohol-related incidences are all on the rise all over the country.

That’s why it’s so critical to know how to spot the signs of an overdose. The sooner you can get help, the better your friend or loved one’s chances of recovery and survival are going to be.

– The main drivers of the opioid epidemic, prescription painkillers like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and fentanyl are both legal and lethal. And given how common their abuse is today, it’s especially important to know how to spot the signs of overdosing on this type of drug.

Some of the most notable signs of a prescription opioid overdose include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

– With a long history of abuse, cocaine is one of the most widely recognized and commonly abused drugs. This powerful and addictive stimulant is not only toxic on its own but is also often cut with a wide variety of fillers as well – making it even more risky to abuse.

Symptoms of a cocaine overdose include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

– America’s favorite addictive substance, alcohol is ingrained in the daily lives of so many. And while it might be legal and widely available, this drug (and it really is a drug) can be exceptionally dangerous.

Some signs of alcohol poisoning to watch for include:

  • Mental confusion
  • Stupor
  • Alcoholic coma
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Significantly slowed breathing
  • Irregular breathing
  • Hypothermia
  • Rash

– Ice, crystal meth, glass, shards – whatever you call it, methamphetamine is a powerful stimulant that’s been a part of the drug scene for quite a while. And while it fell out of style for a stretch, it’s currently making a comeback in the U.S.

Symptoms of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

– A category of drug that includes prescription medications like Xanax, benzodiazepines are primarily used to treat mood disorders like depression and anxiety. But these drugs are becoming a serious source of abuse. And on top of that, they can be quite deadly when taken in dangerous amounts.

If you’re looking for signs of a benzo overdose, keep an eye out for:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Coma
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of cognition
  • Amnesia
  • Paradoxical agitation
  • Respiratory depression

– Without a doubt one of the most notorious drugs on the street today, heroin is one part highly-addictive and on part exceptionally dangerous. Overdoses from heroin are climbing with each passing year. And what used to be an inner-city problem has spread to suburbs, rural communities, and practically everywhere in the country.

Some signs of a heroin overdose you should be on the lookout for include:

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing
  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue
  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse
  • Bluish-colored nails and lips
  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines
  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

If you notice the signs of an overdose, it’s vital that you call 9-1-1 immediately. Each second counts when it comes to treating a drug or alcohol overdose. And if you wait, second-guess, or put it off, it could mean the difference between life and death.

It’s important to remember that you shouldn’t try to transport an overdose victim to the hospital before talking to emergency services. The experts on the other end of the line will not only be able to offer life-saving advice and strategies, but they’ll also be able to dispatch an ambulance to your location while you administer aid. And that can make all the difference.

Once the ambulance has arrived, they’ll likely transport the victim to the nearest hospital.

Gooding Resource Profile

12-Step Support Groups Near Gooding

For decades, alcoholics and drug addicts alike have attended 12-step meetings to help them overcome the powerful draw of a substance of abuse. Here, addicts can move past the social stigmas associated with addiction and be truly honest about their problem in the face of others just like them.

This honesty is a core tenet of 12-step groups like NA and AA and is one way that these meetings help members stay connected and sober.

One of the best things about 12-step support groups is the fact that meetings are so numerous and so common in nearly every part of the country. And this is just as true in Gooding, ID as it is anywhere else.

Anyone looking for support and community when it comes to overcoming addiction should consider attending some of the meetings listed below.

Narcotics Anonymous meetings were created for those who suffer from any type of addiction. This program closely follows the 12 Step Recovery plan. And despite the popular misconception, alcoholics are also welcome at NA meetings, not just drug users.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a program that has been around for decades. It was created as a way to offer a support group setting for those who suffer from alcoholism, and many people have successfully given up their drinking because of it.

Like Narcotics Anonymous, AA also follows the 12 principles of recovery that all 12-step groups follow.

Al-Anon is a program for family members and friends of addicts. As with any other addiction, alcoholism doesn’t just hurt the person who can’t stop drinking. Instead, it affects nearly everyone around them as well.

Maybe it creates an environment of codependency. Or perhaps friends and family members have gotten so used to enabling an addict that they don’t know how to stop.

No matter how addiction has impacted their lives, Al-Anon provides them with a safe place to talk about the issues they face and get support.

What Kind of Treatment Do You Need?

The 12 steps are an integral way of maintaining sobriety and connecting with others. However, the vast majority of addicts will need more care and assistance to achieve sobriety than these programs can offer. And for that, there’s professional addiction treatment.

Treatment programs provide expert guidance throughout the course of your recovery and use proven, clinical procedure to give you the best chances of staying sober long-term. However, there are a number of different treatment levels to choose from, and not everyone will require each.

Talking to an addiction specialist can help you determine which level of treatment is right for you. Below is a brief overview of the options available as well as a quick description of each.

Drug & Alcohol Detoxification – This is the first stage of treatment. Detox is when the body readjusts to functioning without the help of drugs or alcohol. An enormous number of physical changes have taken place over the course of addiction, so this adjustment period can end up being quite uncomfortable – even deadly in some cases.

Partnering with a professional addiction facility can help make this process much more bearable and, most importantly, keep you safe and healthy along the way.

Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation – Rehab comes after detox and is more focused on behaviors than it is on the body. Through behavioral therapy, one-on-one counseling, and group talk sessions, patients learn to rewire their brain so that they can overcome cravings, avoid triggers, and get through each day without falling back into old problematic behaviors.

There are three general types of rehabilitation: inpatient, outpatient, and intensive outpatient.

Inpatient Programs – The most intensive form of treatment, inpatient programs require patients to stay on campus grounds throughout the course of their treatment. This allows for a more controlled environment which allows addicts to focus 100% on their recovery. And that very often translates into a better chance of staying sober.

Inpatient programs are around 28 days long.

Outpatient Treatment – A more flexible method of treatment, an outpatient program consists of evening treatment sessions so that patients can attend to daily responsibilities (schooling, work, family, etc.). These sessions usually only last for a few hours and happen several times a week. With a less controlled environment, though, the risk of relapse can be much higher.

Outpatient programs are around 3 months long.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – This type of program is a bit of a hybrid. It offers the flexibility of outpatient programs by offering night treatment sessions. However, it also provides a more intensive level of care as these sessions are typically longer and occur more frequently.

An IOP will also generally last for around 3 months.

When it comes time to find a program that works for you, it might be best to consider travelling outside of Gooding for treatment.

It’s true that Gooding itself offers at least one treatment program within city limits. However, opening up yourself to the possibility of programs in other cities gives you the freedom to choose which facility is right for you rather than being stuck with just one option.

And finding a program that not only offers exceptional treatment services but also caters to your unique needs is the key to a successful recovery.

But there are more benefits to travelling for your treatment needs than that. Leaving your hometown for alcohol or drug treatment also:

  1. Solidifies the commitment to recovery
  2. Allows patients to focus solely on themselves
  3. Provides a physical barrier to relapsing
  4. Offers much more privacy and confidentiality
  5. Gives patients time to reflect

In the end, finding the right facility is infinitely more important than finding the closest one.

Please don’t allow the cost of addiction treatment to cause you to forgo getting the help you need. Low-cost addiction resources are available to you, and The Affordable Care Act and other healthcare laws are there to give you the assistance you need. To learn more about your options for financial assistance, please visit SAMHSA.gov.

Recent changes in our healthcare legislature have changed the way that people are paying for professional addiction treatment. Today, health insurance providers are actually required by law to help cover the costs of treatment.

Sadly enough, this change is due in part to just how bad the opioid epidemic has gotten. However, the upside is that professional treatment has never been more affordable than it is today as a result.

That being said, it’s still important to verify your insurance coverage before partnering with any particular facility or program.
