A community known for cattle and sheep ranching as well as both dry and irrigated farming, Gooding is a small Idaho community that over 3,500 residents call home.
Gooding’s original name was Toponis, but it was renamed after a sheep rancher who was a political figure in the area during the beginning of the 20th Century.

And it isn’t just opioids either. Cocaine, benzodiazepines, meth, and even alcohol-related incidences are all on the rise all over the country.
That’s why it’s so critical to know how to spot the signs of an overdose. The sooner you can get help, the better your friend or loved one’s chances of recovery and survival are going to be.
– The main drivers of the opioid epidemic, prescription painkillers like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and fentanyl are both legal and lethal. And given how common their abuse is today, it’s especially important to know how to spot the signs of overdosing on this type of drug.
Some of the most notable signs of a prescription opioid overdose include:
- Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
- Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
- Slow, shallow breathing
- Choking or gurgling sounds
- Limp body
- Pale, blue, or cold skin
– With a long history of abuse, cocaine is one of the most widely recognized and commonly abused drugs. This powerful and addictive stimulant is not only toxic on its own but is also often cut with a wide variety of fillers as well – making it even more risky to abuse.
Symptoms of a cocaine overdose include:
- Seizures
- Loss of awareness of surroundings
- Loss of urine control
- High body temperature, severe sweating
- High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
- Bluish color of the skin
- Fast or difficulty breathing
- Death

Some signs of alcohol poisoning to watch for include:
- Mental confusion
- Stupor
- Alcoholic coma

- Seizures

Symptoms of a meth overdose include:
- Agitation
- Chest pain
- Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
- Heart attack
- Irregular or stopped heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing
- Very high body temperature
- Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
- Paranoia
- Seizures
- Severe stomach pain
- Stroke
– A category of drug that includes prescription medications like Xanax, benzodiazepines are primarily used to treat mood disorders like depression and anxiety. But these drugs are becoming a serious source of abuse. And on top of that, they can be quite deadly when taken in dangerous amounts.

- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Drowsiness
- Blurred vision
- Unresponsiveness
- Anxiety
- Agitation

- Slurred speech

- Altered mental status, impairment of cognition

Some signs of a heroin overdose you should be on the lookout for include:
- No breathing
- Shallow breathing
- Slow and difficult breathing
- Dry mouth
- Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
- Discolored tongue
- Low blood pressure
- Weak pulse
- Bluish-colored nails and lips
- Constipation
- Spasms of the stomach and intestines
- Coma
- Delirium
- Disorientation
- Drowsiness
- Uncontrolled muscle movements
If you notice the signs of an overdose, it’s vital that you call 9-1-1 immediately. Each second counts when it comes to treating a drug or alcohol overdose. And if you wait, second-guess, or put it off, it could mean the difference between life and death.
It’s important to remember that you shouldn’t try to transport an overdose victim to the hospital before talking to emergency services. The experts on the other end of the line will not only be able to offer life-saving advice and strategies, but they’ll also be able to dispatch an ambulance to your location while you administer aid. And that can make all the difference.
Once the ambulance has arrived, they’ll likely transport the victim to the nearest hospital.

What Kind of Treatment Do You Need?
The 12 steps are an integral way of maintaining sobriety and connecting with others. However, the vast majority of addicts will need more care and assistance to achieve sobriety than these programs can offer. And for that, there’s professional addiction treatment.
Treatment programs provide expert guidance throughout the course of your recovery and use proven, clinical procedure to give you the best chances of staying sober long-term. However, there are a number of different treatment levels to choose from, and not everyone will require each.
Talking to an addiction specialist can help you determine which level of treatment is right for you. Below is a brief overview of the options available as well as a quick description of each.
Drug & Alcohol Detoxification – This is the first stage of treatment. Detox is when the body readjusts to functioning without the help of drugs or alcohol. An enormous number of physical changes have taken place over the course of addiction, so this adjustment period can end up being quite uncomfortable – even deadly in some cases.

Outpatient Treatment – A more flexible method of treatment, an outpatient program consists of evening treatment sessions so that patients can attend to daily responsibilities (schooling, work, family, etc.). These sessions usually only last for a few hours and happen several times a week. With a less controlled environment, though, the risk of relapse can be much higher.
Outpatient programs are around 3 months long.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – This type of program is a bit of a hybrid. It offers the flexibility of outpatient programs by offering night treatment sessions. However, it also provides a more intensive level of care as these sessions are typically longer and occur more frequently.
An IOP will also generally last for around 3 months.
When it comes time to find a program that works for you, it might be best to consider travelling outside of Gooding for treatment.
