Spotting The Signs of An Overdose
Overdosing is one of the most terrifying and dangerous outcomes of substance abuse. The inherent toxicity of street drugs like heroin and cocaine as well as the dangerous potency of prescription ones like OxyContin or Xanax are sometimes too much for the body to take.
And when that happens, the results can be deadly. In fact, drug overdoses are now the #1 cause of death among Americans under the age of 50.
While the majority of that is driven by prescription opioids, other substances are to blame as well.
Since it’s become such an overwhelming problem in the United States today, it’s critical that you know how to spot the signs of an overdose as soon as humanly possible. Doing so can mean the difference between a full recovery and permanent damage or even death.
Heroin – Some of the most common symptoms of a heroin overdose include:
- No breathing
- Shallow breathing
- Slow and difficult breathing
- Dry mouth
- Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
- Discolored tongue
- Low blood pressure
- Weak pulse
- Bluish-colored nails and lips
- Constipation
- Spasms of the stomach and intestines
- Coma
- Delirium
- Disorientation
- Drowsiness
- Uncontrolled muscle movements
Benzodiazepines – Signs of overdosing on benzodiazepines like Xanax and Ativan may include:
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Drowsiness
- Blurred vision
- Unresponsiveness
- Anxiety
- Agitation
- Hallucinations
- Slurred speech
- Coma
- Weakness
- Altered mental status, impairment of cognition
- Amnesia
- Paradoxical agitation
- Respiratory depression
Cocaine – Overdose symptoms of cocaine may include:
- Seizures
- Loss of awareness of surroundings
- Loss of urine control
- High body temperature, severe sweating
- High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
- Bluish color of the skin
- Fast or difficulty breathing
- Death
Prescription Opioids – Symptoms of a prescription opioid overdose might include:
- Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
- Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
- Slow, shallow breathing
- Choking or gurgling sounds
- Limp body
- Pale, blue, or cold skin
Crystal Meth – Signs of an overdose on crystal meth could include:
- Agitation
- Chest pain
- Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
- Heart attack
- Irregular or stopped heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing
- Very high body temperature
- Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
- Paranoia
- Seizures
- Severe stomach pain
- Stroke
If you or someone you love is overdosing, it’s absolutely critical to call 9-1-1 immediately. Getting prompt medical help as quickly as possible can vastly improve the outcome of an overdose and can be the key to saving a life.
These medical experts will not only offer lifesaving advice on how to handle the situation, but they'll also likely dispatch an ambulance as well. The overdose victim will then be taken to one of several hospitals or emergency rooms.
