What Should You Do During An Overdose?

One of the deadliest outcomes of substance abuse is an overdose. Today, drug overdoses are actually the number one cause of death among Americans under 50.

The bulk of the damage is, of course, caused by the continuing opioid epidemic that America has been grappling with for well over a decade. But it’s worth noting that drugs like OxyContin and heroin aren’t the only culprits.

Toxicity from cocaine, alcohol, methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, and many other types of addictive drugs continues to kill staggering numbers of people in the U.S. every single day.

In 2016 alone, more than 63,500 people died from a drug overdose. Added to that, estimates from data from the CDC show that well over 70 thousand Americans will die in 2018 from drug-related causes.

Given just how dangerous addictive drugs can be, it’s imperative to know exactly what to do in case of an overdose. And the obvious thing to do if someone is overdosing is to call 9-1-1 immediately. Don’t wait, don’t hesitate, and don’t second-guess. Each second counts here.

The medical experts on the other line will be able to offer lifesaving medical advice as well as dispatch an ambulance. The overdose victim will then likely be transferred to one of two hospitals in the Emmett Valley area.

But before anyone can get help, the very first step is identifying the signs of an overdose before it’s too late.

For some drugs, identifying an overdose can be simple. Unconsciousness, persistent vomiting, and seizures all indicate a very immediate danger. But for other drugs, the signs may not be so clear.

That’s why it’s important to know the signs of overdosing on some of the most commonly abused drugs today.

Heroin – Without a doubt one of the most notorious drugs today, overdosing on heroin is not only incredibly common, but it's also deadlier than most other substances of abuse. And that makes it all the more critical to identify the signs early.

According to MedlinePlus, the most common signs of a heroin overdose include:

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing
  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue
  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse
  • Bluish-colored nails and lips
  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines
  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Prescription Opioids – Opioids similar to heroin, prescription painkillers like oxycodone and hydrocodone are the drugs behind the opioid epidemic. They’re legal, addictive, and exceptionally powerful. Some are even hundreds of times as powerful as heroin.

The CDC’s fact sheet on preventing an opioid overdose include symptoms such as:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

CocaineOne of America’s favorite party drugs, cocaine is known for its euphoric high and the seemingly boundless energy that it provides for its abusers. However, this drug can often be highly toxic – not to mention especially deadly due to the dangerous fillers that the drug is often cut with.

Some signs of dangerous cocaine toxicity include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Alcohol – Alcohol is without a doubt the most widely abused addictive substance in the country. Part of the reason comes from the fact that it's so ingrained in our country's culture. It's also available in nearly every grocery store, gas station, and even corner market.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t just as dangerous as other drugs. In fact, as many as 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes every year in the United States.

Alcohol poisoning was one of the main causes here, but other dangers like drunk driving and alcoholic hepatitis can’t be forgotten about either.

Some signs of alcohol overdosing to watch out for include:

  • Vomiting
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Hypothermia
  • Stupor
  • Seizures
  • Confusion
  • Impaired coordination
  • Irregular or shallow breathing
  • Skin color changes

Methamphetamine – Also known as crystal meth, this drug causes an intense and highly addictive burst of energy that can end up leading to days-long binges on this dangerous drug. But as with any other addictive substance, abusing meth can also lead to a deadly overdose as well.

Some symptoms of overdosing on meth include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Benzodiazepines – Used for treating mood disorders like depression and anxiety, benzodiazepines such as Ativan, Xanax, and Klonopin can be incredibly deadly either on their own or when combined with other drugs.

According to Medscape, some of the most notable signs of a benzodiazepine overdose include:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Coma
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of cognition
  • Amnesia
  • Paradoxical agitation
  • Respiratory depression

Getting Professional Addiction Treatment

As helpful as the 12 steps can be in overcoming addiction, most people will need to seek out professional treatment if they want to conquer their addiction for good. And while there may be a few addiction programs to choose from within Emmett itself, the best option may be to travel outside of city limits to get the right kind of treatment.

That being said, what should an addict look for when it comes to choosing the right kind of program? How do they know what kind of treatment they need? And what about the costs – how important is the price tag?

One of the hardest parts of checking into professional treatment is deciding on which program to partner with. And it isn’t made any easier by the fact that there are a number of treatment categories to choose from.

Reaching out to an addiction professional is the best way of determining what level of treatment is right for you. But even so, it can be helpful to know the various options available beforehand.

Let’s take a look at each.

Detoxification – Often the very first step when it comes to treatment, detox is the process of providing medical attention and various treatments as the body readjusts to life without the substance of abuse. It’s often accompanied by painful and even deadly withdrawals, so it's critical that you partner with a professional during this dangerous stage.

Inpatient Rehab – An inpatient program is what most people imagine when they think of addiction treatment. Patients are confined to campus grounds for around 28-days. They eat, sleep, and spend most of their time at the facility. This comes with a couple of benefits.

First, it insulates patients from the responsibilities and temptations of the outside world. Second, it provides a much more focused level of recovery where the number one concern is to get better. And third, the level of care provided by the facility itself is much higher than other treatment types.

However, in most cases, patients cannot attend school, go to their jobs, or fulfill certain day-to-day obligations when it comes to their families.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Outpatient rehabilitation treatment is a bit more flexible. It allows patients to attend evening treatment sessions several times a week. They may undergo behavioral therapy, group talk, and one-on-one counseling just like inpatient programs, though the care is not going to be quite as extensive.

This treatment option is great for people who either just got out of inpatient care or people who have an especially light addiction. These programs are often around 3 months long.

Intensive Outpatient Rehab – This program aims to provide the best of both worlds. Patients only attend nightly sessions, but they often occur more frequently and for a longer duration. Intensive outpatient programs (or IOPs) are a step up in the level of care from outpatient but aren't as focused as inpatient.

IOPs will often last for around 3 months as well.

Travelling outside of Emmett itself for treatment can offer loads of benefits.

First, it opens up the possibilities far more than the several facilities that are in Emmett Valley. And that means you’ll have access to a higher level of care as well as the greater chance of recovery that comes along with it.

Second, it can actually help focus on the point of recovery – getting better. Getting treatment in your hometown can subject you to stigmas, phobias, and environments that fostered old bad habits. And that can all add up to a worse shot at long-term sobriety.

And finally, it allows you to be selfish when it comes to recovery. Sometimes the best way of getting better is by focusing entirely on your needs. And travelling for rehabilitation is a great way of doing that.

There are plenty of other reasons too. But more than anything else, the key to kicking addiction for good is finding a facility that works for you. Not just finding one that’s nearby.

So many people put off getting help for their addictions for financial reasons. They honestly feel as though they can’t afford addiction treatment, but most of them don’t realize how many different resources there are that can help them.

SAMHSA.gov is a website that can provide you with links and information that can help you get the free financial aid that you need to get started with your addiction treatment. You’ll learn about The Affordable Care Act and other healthcare laws that have been put into place to assist you as well.

It’s also important to recognize that getting professional treatment isn’t nearly as costly as it used to be thanks to new legislation regarding health insurance. In fact, the overwhelming majority of insurance carriers are now actually required to help cover professional treatment costs.

If you’re considering treatment, then, it’s important to verify your insurance before settling on a facility. It may end up being much more affordable than you think.
