What To Do In Case of an Overdose

What To Do In Case of an Overdose

The deadliest outcome of using drugs, an overdose is the body’s natural reaction to an over-toxicity caused by using too much heroin, cocaine, or any other drug. It can lead to permanent mental and physical damage and also may result in coma or even death.

But what can you do to prevent overdosing? What if someone else is overdosing? How can you help?

The very first step when it comes to minimizing the damage of an overdose is to act quickly. And that means you need to know how to spot the signs of an OD before it’s too late. Here are the signs to watch out for.

Heroin Overdose Signs

According to MedlinePlus, some of the most notable signs of a heroin overdose are:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

MedlinePlus lists the symptoms of a cocaine overdose as:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

For prescription drugs like benzodiazepines (like Xanax), there are a few symptoms to be on the lookout for when it comes to overdosing. According to WebMD, these include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Weakness
  • Slurred speech
  • Lack of coordination
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coma

With prescription opioids like OxyContin, the signs of an overdose are a little bit different. The CDC lists some symptoms to watch out for as:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Finally, prescription stimulants can also be quite dangerous during an overdose. The National Institute on Drug Abuse lists the signs of this kind of overdose as:

  • Restlessness
  • Tremors
  • Overactive reflexes
  • Rapid breathing
  • Confusion
  • Aggression
  • Hallucinations
  • Panic states
  • Abnormally increased fever
  • Muscle pains
  • Weakness
  • Irregular heartbeat that can lead to heart attack
  • Abnormally high or low blood pressure
  • Circulation failure
  • Nerve problems that lead to seizures
  • Convulsions
  • Coma
Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning

Alcohol poisoning can be incredibly deadly. Below are some of the most notable signs to watch out for:

  • Constant vomiting
  • Blackouts
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Hypothermia
  • Stupor
  • Seizures
  • Confusion
  • Impaired coordination
  • Shallow or irregular breathing
  • Skin color changes

After identifying the signs of an overdose, the most important thing to do is to get emergency medical help immediately. The sooner the overdosing individual receives help, the better their chances will be for making a full recovery and avoiding permanent damage.

This means calling 9-1-1. Do not try to take the person to a hospital before contacting emergency services. Often they’ll be able to dispatch an ambulance while giving medical advice that may end up saving the person’s life.

Overdose is also becoming increasingly common. True, much of this trend is due to the continually raging opioid epidemic. But even still, other drugs like cocaine and alcohol are also playing a part. Here are a few stats to put the problem into perspective.

Blackfoot Resource Profile

12-Step Meetings Near Blackfoot

One of the best resources for a struggling drug user or alcoholic is tapping into the healing power of a 12-step meeting. More commonly known as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, or family groups like Al-Anon and Alateen, these meetings are free, widely available, and of course 100% confidential.

12-Step Meetings Near Blackfoot

They can also offer a much-needed social connection to others as well as a dedicated support network. And both of these can be integral parts of keeping an addict sober.

And while Blackfoot may not be the biggest town in Idaho, there are plenty of 12-step meetings happening in and around this area.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings provide a support group setting for those who are in need of treatment for alcoholism. This is a proven program that has helped thousands of people recover.

Within Blackfoot, there are a couple of AA meetings to choose from too.

Online Support Groups

Online Support Groups

Online support groups are available as a standalone service, or as an add-on service to traditional support groups. One of the biggest benefits of using these types of groups is that addicts don’t need to travel to a physical meeting place. Instead, all they have to do is log on and start chatting.

It’s a much more flexible approach to recovery and support that can bring healing to anyone with an internet connection.

Finding Addiction Treatment in Blackfoot, ID

While the 12 principles of recovery offered by Anonymous groups can be incredibly helpful when it comes to overcoming addiction, many people will need actual treatment in order to kick their addiction for good.

Professional addiction treatment is the absolute best way of receiving individualized treatment, learning effective tips to safeguard against relapse, and ensuring the absolute best chances of staying sober for good.

Within Blackfoot itself, there are a couple of treatment programs to choose from. However, many recovering addicts find that there are enormous benefits to traveling outside of their home town to get the treatment they truly need.

These benefits include:

  • It solidifies the commitment to recovery
  • Patients can focus solely on self
  • Travel offers time for reflection
  • There is no easy way to leave
  • There is much more privacy and confidentiality

In the end, while there are several facilities within Blackfoot for addiction treatment, one of the best options for addicts may be to travel outside for treatment.

It’s far better to partner with the right facility than just the one that’s closest.

Finances are always a consideration when discussing addiction treatment resources. Many people feel that they can’t afford to get professional help for their addictions, but this is not the case at all. SAMHSA.gov offers links and information regarding the Affordable Care Act and other healthcare laws that have been put into place to make getting addiction treatment more affordable for everyone.

Additionally, insurance will typically cover a significant amount of the cost of treatment. Most facilities will work with the majority of insurance providers to make sure an addict is getting the individualized care that they need to recover.

Even still, it’s helpful to verify insurance coverage before starting treatment just to know what to expect once treatment is over.
