Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Meetings in Americans Falls, Idaho

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is one of the first 12 step programs to ever emerge. It's one of the most popular support groups and has treated millions of people worldwide. AA is faith-based. Members put their faith in a power greater than themselves. With that said, being religious is not a requirement. Members can have any religious affiliation that they want.

The only requirement for joining AA is a desire to get sober and to stop drinking. Members connect with other like-minded individuals. The meetings are a safe place to share their feelings about addiction and to vent out their frustrations. These meetings are a judgment-free place. AA offers the social support many recovering alcoholics need to stay disciplined and motivated.

Recovering alcoholics have the option of joining either an open meeting or a closed meeting. Closed meetings are reserved for addicts only. Open meetings are open to the general public. Researchers, family and friends and therapists can also attend.

More AA Resources

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is one of the first 12 step programs created. This type of support group was founded in 1935 at Akron, Ohio. The founders include Bill W., who was a New York stockbroker, and Dr. Bob S., who was an Akron surgeon.

Both of these people were recovering alcoholics. They had tried everything in their power to get over an alcohol addiction. Ever alcoholism treatment they tried ended in failure.

When the two met, their skills and experiences complemented one another. Bill emphasized that alcoholism was a disease of the mind. It toyed with a person's emotions and body. Dr. Bob, on the other hand, had a lot of experience with nonalcoholic fellowships that looked at using spiritual values to treat alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Together, they came up with the idea for Alcoholics Anonymous.

Nowadays, AA has spread across the nation. This organization has grown significantly. There are meetings in just about every city in America. Many people around the world also join these meetings to stay on the right track and to get sober.

The reason why AA is so effective is because it strictly follows twelve steps. Members are expected to go through each step during their recovery. As they go through each step, they learn more about addiction and themselves. Continual practice of these steps will eventually help recovering alcoholics reach sobriety.

All AA meetings and 12 step programs follow these twelve steps. Each step is discussed in more detail in step discussions. The twelve steps include:

  1. Admitting that you are powerless over alcohol and that your life has become unmanageable
  2. Coming to a belief that a power greater than yourself can save you
  3. Making a decision to turn your will and your life over to the Higher Power
  4. Making a fearless moral inventory of yourself
  5. Admitting to a Higher Power and to someone else the exact nature of all of your wrongs
  6. Getting ready to have all the defects mentioned above removed by a Higher Power
  7. Asking the Higher Power to remove your shortcoming
  8. Making a list of all the people you've wronged and become willing to make amends to them
  9. Directly making amends to the people mentioned above whenever possible
  10. Continuing to examine yourself to admit when you are wrong
  11. Seeking self-awareness through prayers and meditation
  12. Achieving a spiritual awakening and continuing to practice the principles learned through AA

The twelve steps can be a bit difficult to follow. This is why it's important to attend AA meetings in American Falls. The meetings will provide more insight into what goes on behind each step. More established members can help new members master each move.

There's actually a deeper meaning behind each step. Take a look at our explanation of the 12 steps involved with recovery. You'll get a better idea of why each step is important.

The million dollar question that many people wonder is, "how effective is AA?"

Can joining an AA meeting in American Falls miraculously treat you of an AUD?

The answer is no. AA in and near American Falls is not a magical solution. It, however, is an integral part of addiction recovery and is highly recommended by addiction specialists and rehab programs. AA connects recovering alcoholics with others in a similar situation. This way, they feel less alone.

Social support is a critical key in addiction recovery. It helps change a person's perspective of the world. A strong support network can transform a recovering alcoholic into a:

  • Contributing member of society
  • Hardworking employee
  • Loving parent, friend or spouse

Social support also holds the recovering alcoholic responsible for his or her action. These support groups change a person's behavior and thoughts.

But, how effective is this type of program?

Many studies have looked into this question and have received mixed answers. Some members have yielded positive results from their attendance. Others did not experience much of a change at all.

This could be because AA is not for everyone. Some people also respond better to other types of recovery meetings.

Still, there's no harm in trying. Give AA a go to see whether it's the right choice for you.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Meetings in American Falls, Idaho

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is similar to AA. The only difference lies in what these support groups treat. While AA solely treat alcoholism, NA only treats drug addiction. NA follows the same twelve steps as AA. Like AA, it is also a faith-based recovery program, and members put their faith in a power greater than themselves.

NA meetings in American Falls treat all types of drug addiction, from crack cocaine to heroin to methamphetamine. Many people who seek NA are addicted to more than one substance. This is also known as polydrug abuse.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Meetings in American Falls, Idaho

Meetings can also be further specialized by treating a specific type of drug addiction. For example, there’s Cocaine Anonymous (CA) for coke addicts and Heroin Anonymous (HA) for those addicted to heroin.

These meetings offer both emotional and social support to recovering drug abusers. Support from others is critical to one's recovery. It can change one's environment and transform one's mindset. Those who have support are less likely to give in to their cravings and are less likely to relapse.

Much like with AA, NA meetings can either be open or closed. Anyone can go to open meetings, but only recovering drug addicts are welcome at closed meetings. Meeting types also vary. There are speaker discussions, step discussions, book studies and daily reflections. New members are also paired with established ones. The established members become a mentor.

Once again, there are only a handful of NA meetings in American Falls. Check the calendar below to get more information. If none of the meeting times and locations fit your schedule, look for NA meetings in nearby cities. They're just as effective.

More NA Resources

So, how does NA transform addicts? How do addicts go from a state of hopeless to feeling empowered? Recovery is a long and arduous journey. By going to meetings on a regular basis, recovering drug addicts are able to:

  • Honestly assess their addiction and face the reality of their choices. They get to see how unmanageable their life was getting with their drug use. They also get to see how much denial they were previously in.
  • Look closely at themselves and their shortcoming. By believing in a power greater than themselves, members open up and take a more in-depth look at their own shortcomings. At times, these defects in their characters are what drove them to abuse drugs in the first place.
  • Face the wrongdoings of their past. Members learn how to right their wrongs. NA helps improve strained relationships, and can also help many people get back on a good note with friends and family. This relieves many drug abusers of their inner guilt and shame.
  • Focus on getting clean and staying sober. By going to NA meetings regularly, recovering drug abusers focus on one thing and one thing only: how to stay sober.

NA works, but it does take time and motivation. If you're interested in this type of recovery meeting, learn more about the science behind NA.

Alateen Meetings Near American Falls, ID

Alateen Meetings Near American Falls, ID

Teenagers and children of people who have drug or alcohol addictions need support and comfort during this difficult time. Alateen provides them with the help they need. These meetings are similar to Al Anon meetings. The only difference is that they connect teenagers and young adults together.

They may see a dark and ugly side of their parents. These children often grow up to become adult children of alcoholic parents. They have more responsibilities than regular children and are under a lot more stress.

SMART Meetings located in or around American Falls

It is not difficult in today's more modern world to find many people where faith is absent as a part of their life. The leaps science has made in the last several decades has caused many people to turn to it as the answer for many of the most important questions they have. This many times applies to addicts too, which can make finding support groups and meetings for drug and alcohol addiction more difficult to find. Virtually every support group around, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, rely on personal faith as an integral part of their program. There is now, however, an additional choice in the form of the SMART program.

SMART, which stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training, is an organization that bases its entire program on science and advances made in addiction recovery. SMART has a 4-point program that teaches lessons and tools that are applicable to virtually all forms of addiction. SMART teaches self empowerment, or finding the power within themselves personally to overcome their addictive behavior. SMART hosts in-person meetings and many helpful resources online.

There are two SMART meetings located in the neighboring city of Pocatello.

Financial Assistance for Drug and Alcohol Resources and Treatment in American Falls, ID

There are laws that exist that help provide everyone who needs addiction help with it. In the past, people often found that they had to cover their addiction treatment costs out of their own pocket, but The Affordable Care Act and other laws have changed that significantly. Visit SAMHSA.gov to find out how you can get the help you need to cover your addiction treatment needs.

Drug Rehab in American Falls, ID

Given its small size, it is of little surprise that there are no drug rehab facilities located directly in American Falls. Fortunately, however, there are many to be had in nearby Pocatello. There are a total of 25 rehab centers that include programs for drug abuse of all types. Out of these facilities, only two have inpatient programs, with the remaining offering only outpatient services. These include different levels of intensity, included standard, intensive and partial hospital programs.

Alcohol Rehab in American Falls, ID

Finding any rehab facilities right in American Falls is also an exercise in futility. As with drug rehab centers, however, quite a few can be found once again in Pocatello. There you will find a total of 14 rehab centers that provide programs that concentrate specifically in treating alcoholism.

A variety of these programs also offer support for dual diagnosis, or co-occurring disorder. Treating dual diagnosis requires the need to address both the drug and mental health side of the equation. Many types of therapy are offered, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), group therapy, and one on one therapy sessions. All of the alcohol rehab centers in American Falls are outpatient programs.

Alcohol and Drug Detox in American Falls

There is no getting around the fact that virtually every drug or alcohol addiction requires several steps to complete before you have a prayer of conquering it for good. These steps are taken in a specific order, otherwise the recovery process does not work correctly. The very first step you want to take is attending a good detox program.

Out of all the different phases of recovering from addiction, detox is likely to be the most physically dangerous. Detox is where your body gets any remaining traces of the alcohol or drug out of your system, and becoming accustomed to not having it in your system. Many substances, namely alcohol and opioids, have withdrawal symptoms and side effects that may need additional medications to ensure they do not become too serious or life threatening. This is called medicated detox, and is used by many drug and alcohol detox facilities when it is necessary.

Attending a professional detox program also has other benefits to it. While you may not require medicated detox, the level of intensity of your withdrawal symptoms can be extreme in nature. This is the point where most people who try and quit on their own falter, they just want to make the pain and uncomfortable nature of withdrawal to stop. In a detox program, professionals can talk you through the ordeal, and make sure you do not sneak off and find drugs or alcohol.

Alcohol & Drug Detox Facilities in American Falls

As with rehab programs, there are no facilities equipped to handle drug or alcohol detox in or around American Falls. The facilities in Pocatello are outpatient, and for the rigors of detox, an inpatient facility is usually a necessity. Your best resource for a serious detox situation is a local hospital. There is one hospital located in the city of American Falls.

Online Support Groups

Online support groups are available as a way to offer additional support for those in recovery.

What to Do in Case of a Drug Overdose or Alcohol Poisoning

Drug overdoses and alcohol poisoning are becoming increasingly common. In 2016, there were 63,632 fatal drug overdoses. This doesn't even account for all of the drug overdoses that led to emergency room visits or resulted in serious damage to the body and mind.

The rise in fatal drug overdoses is mostly attributed to fentanyl. This opioid is 20,000 to 50,000 times more potent than morphine. Only a few micrograms is needed to cause an overdose. With that said, many people are still overdosing on other substances, like alcohol and methamphetamines as well.

What to Do in Case of a Drug Overdose or Alcohol Poisoning

In the event of a drug or alcohol overdose, the first thing that you should do is call 9-1-1. The overdose victim needs urgent and immediate medical attention. Their condition can take a turn for the worst at any moment. Provide the emergency responders with as much information as possible, so they can make the best decision possible for the victim.

You can also consider taking the overdose victim to a hospital in American Falls, ID.

If you’ve already called 9-1-1 and help is on the way, here are several other things that you can also do:

  • Assess the overdose victim by checking their level of consciousness. Put the victim in the recovery position if he or she is unresponsiveness.
  • Reassure the victim if he or she is conscious. Try to keep him or her calm until the emergency responders arrive.
  • Keep the victim comfortable. Some drugs can cause a person to overheat. Remove clothing to help keep the victim cool.
  • Identify the drug that was taken. This includes the dose taken and when it was taken. The method of administration is also important.

Stay calm and collected. Don't panic. If you panic, you might stress out the overdose victim. Also, you're much more likely to make mistakes and overlook important information.

Signs and symptoms of drug overdoses and alcohol poisoning can be difficult to identify. Signs and symptoms can vary greatly depending on the type of substance that was taken. The severity of the symptoms will also vary from person to person.

Here are some common signs and symptoms of an overdose. It's important to note that not all of these symptoms may appear in an overdose victim.

  • Abdominal pains and stomach aches
  • Cold, clammy and pale skin
  • Depression, aggressive behavior or sudden mood changes
  • Difficulties breathing or irregular breathing patterns
  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Hallucinations, psychosis or confusion
  • Loss of coordination and wobbly movements
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Seizures or tremors

If you suspect someone of overdosing on any substance, get them him or her immediately. Don't wait for these symptoms to worsen.

In the event of a heroin overdose, the overdose victim will look like he or she is falling asleep. Heroin has become a huge burden on America. Heroin overdose death rates have increased by over five folds from 2010 to 2016.

An overdose will usually lead to both cardiac and respiratory depression and failure. In the event of a heroin overdose, take the following actions:

  • Call 9-1-1 for help immediately
  • Place the overdose victim in the recovery position if he or she has lost consciousness
  • Administer CPR if the victim stops breathing
  • Administer naloxone, an opioid-reversing medication

Naloxone is one of the first drugs that emergency responders will administer when they arrive at the scene. If you can, try to find out how much heroin was taken and when it was taken. This is all vital information needed by the emergency responders.

The signs and symptoms of a cocaine overdose are quite different than those of a heroin overdose. Overdose victims do not look as if they're falling asleep. Instead, those who have overdosed on cocaine will feel like they're having a heart attack.

They may have higher than normal blood pressure and will become agitated. They may also become extremely restless. If the overdose is not treated quickly enough, it could lead to respiratory, heart and kidney failure.

In the event of a cocaine overdose, take the following steps:

  • Call 9-1-1 for help immediately
  • Administer CPR if the overdose victim experiences respiratory failure or depression
  • Use physical restraints if the victim gets overly agitated

A lot of the symptoms are psychological. Those struggling with a cocaine overdose will often fly off the handle. They become hyperactive and aggressive.

Stay with the overdose victim until help arrives. Once again, try to figure out the dose taken and the time that the drug was taken. This information can help emergency responders make a better decision for the victim. Keep a sample of the drugs in a bag for the professionals to look at.

Prescription drugs are becoming a larger and larger problem in America. Since doctors prescribe these medications, many people believe that they are harmless. This can't be further from the truth.

Prescription drugs often come with a potential for abuse. Those who misuse these or take them for long periods of time can develop an addiction to them. They may also overdose on these prescription medications if they take too large of a dose.

Popular prescription drugs include benzodiazepines, anti-anxiety medications, opioids, sedatives and barbiturates.

If someone you know has overdosed on prescription drugs, you can help by doing the following:

  • Call 9-1-1 for help immediately
  • Place the victim in the recovery position
  • Administer CPR whenever necessary

If the victim overdosed on prescription opioids, naloxone can reverse the effects of the opioids. This can save the victim's life.

Collect prescription bottles for the emergency responders. If you can, figure out which prescriptions were taken and the dose that was taken.

Get Help from an Inpatient Addiction Recovery Facility

Inpatient addiction treatment offers the highest level of care possible to recovering addicts. Patients move directly into the rehab facility and stay there for anywhere from 28 to 90 days. They eat their meals, do their laundry, receive counseling and therapy and spend all of their free time at the rehab facility.

Due to this reason, this level of care offers the highest success rates and completion rates. Patients are more likely to adhere to the treatment, and are less likely to relapse.

Get Help from an Inpatient Addiction Recovery Facility

As a result, residential inpatient treatment programs are most ideal for patients who:

  • Are treating an addiction for the first time
  • Have a serious addiction or a long-term addiction
  • Are at risk for experiencing life-threatening withdrawal symptoms
  • Are constantly relapsing despite having tried other addiction treatment programs

Not all alcohol and drug rehab facilities offer inpatient treatment. Northpoint Recovery in Boise, ID is one of the state's leading alcohol and drug inpatient treatment centers. We offer a lot of amenities and different treatment options. It's easy to personalize each treatment to each patient.

There are many reasons why an inpatient program may or may not be ideal for a patient. Before getting admitted into an inpatient treatment facility, consider the following pros and cons of inpatient programs:

Pros

  • Around-the-clock supervision by trained staff and therapists. Patients are never alone when dealing with an addiction. Constant medical supervision ensures that patients receive the highest quality of care possible.
  • Easily personalized treatment plans. Thanks to the constant supervision, medical professionals can easily adjust and change each patient's treatment plan. This ensures optimal comfort during addiction recovery. Patients are less likely to experience any intense physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms.
  • A sense of community. Patients get to bond with other residents in the facility. This gives them a sense of community, which can keep them focused and disciplined.
  • A new environment. Triggers that result in relapses are often found in one's environment. By moving to a new environment, patients can avoid triggers. They can maintain a peaceful and calm state of mind throughout recovery.  There are fewer distractions to worry about, so patients can focus on their recovery.
  • Easy access to therapists and counseling. To beat an addiction, you must have the right state of mind. With an inpatient treatment program, you can speak with addiction therapists whenever you want.
  • A healthier lifestyle. In-house chefs cook all of the patient's meals. Patients also will have exercises scheduled into their daily timetable. Inpatient rehabs completely change a person's routine to help them become healthier.
  • Structure. Inpatient programs offer structure. This helps patients to stay disciplined. The rehab facility will prepare different activities for the patients every day.

Cons

  • Limited freedom and flexibility. Patients will need to live at the treatment facility. They are not free to come and go as they please, as they are stuck at the facility. Patients cannot leave the premises until they have completed their treatment.
  • Cost. Inpatient treatment programs tend to be a lot more expensive than outpatient treatment programs or partial hospitalization programs (PHPs). Not all of the substance abuse treatments used in inpatient programs may be covered under your insurance. You may need to pay for some of the expenses out of your own pocket.
  • Inability to tend to work, school or familial responsibilities. Since patients will be staying at a rehab facility, they will need to take a leave from their job or from school. They also need to make arrangements for any familial obligations and responsibilities that they may have. For example, those who have children will need to look into childcare arrangements.

Health Insurance at Northpoint Recovery

Paying for an alcohol or drug detox program is pricey if you have to do it out of your own pocket. Most quality programs run into the tens of thousands of dollars, which is completely out of the range of most any person. This is especially true with an addict, considering many times all of their money has gone to the addiction. Aside from assistance from the government, the only way these people can get the help they need is by using health insurance.

Northpoint Recovery understands this inevitable truth, and has worked hard to accept as many different policies and providers we possibly can. We are proud members of a variety of health insurance networks, and make it a point to find new ones as often as we can.
