Tips for dealing with someone who’s addicted

Top Quote

Addiction is a chronic disease! It isn’t your fault and you shouldn’t blame yourself.

Bottom Quote
  • If you suspect they are using drugs or alcohol, do not threaten or punish them. Anger and threats rarely lead to a positive change in behavior. Offering choices to get healthy will empower them.
  • Protect yourself and the rest of your family. Love your child, but do not allow them to bring you to “rock bottom”.
  • Establish clear boundaries about what behaviors you will and will not tolerate—and stick to them.
  • Join an Al-Anon/Nar-Anon group. They can teach you healthy ways to interact with your child and how to avoid enabling them.
  • Don’t try to do it alone. Seek counseling and help from addiction professionals.

Enabling Doesn’t Help

Enabling is doing things for them that they could normally do for themselves if they were sober. It protects them from the consequences of their addiction and allows them to delay confronting and getting help for their problem.

Examples of Enabling

  • Waking them up for school/work when they are hungover
  • Giving them money when they lose their job
  • Covering up or making excuses for them
  • Paying their overdue bills and expenses
  • Buying drugs or alcohol for them
  • Avoiding issues that need to be addressed to avoid making the addict angry
